Day 2: Crane Spotting and Valley Hikes: A Day of Discovery in Phobjikha
Immerse yourself in Phobjikha Valley with wildlife encounters, nature trails, and local flavors. A serene escape in the heart of Bhutan.
A Valley of Serenity
Today was everything I dreamed of and more. It's funny how sometimes the most anticipated moments of a trip can either soar beyond expectations or fall flat. Thankfully, today in Phobjikha Valley was a symphony of breathtaking landscapes, gentle exploration, and genuine connection with nature. It was a day that reaffirmed my love for solo travel and the quiet moments of reflection it allows.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Tenphey Bhutanese cuisine. I opted for the traditional *Ema Datshi* with red rice, a fiery and flavorful start to the day. Fuelled up, I set off for the Gangtey Nature Trail. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. The trail, a gentle two-hour trek, started near the Gangtey Monastery, winding its way down into the valley. The panoramic views were simply stunning. As I descended, the valley unfolded beneath me, a vast expanse of green dotted with traditional Bhutanese farmhouses. It was easy to see why this place is considered so sacred.

The trail itself was a delight. It meandered through grassy plains and dense pine forests, the silence broken only by the rustling of leaves and the occasional birdsong. I paused frequently, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of the valley's serene beauty. I was mindful of the altitude, taking my time and breathing deeply. I even spotted a few yaks grazing in the distance, their caramel-colored horns a stark contrast against the green landscape. It was moments like these that made me feel truly connected to the natural world. I made sure to pack extra camera batteries, remembering my oversight from the packing list back in Banff. That was a close call!
The beauty of Phobjikha Valley lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but in the sense of peace and tranquility it instills in the soul.
After the Gangtey Nature Trail, I was ready for lunch. I headed to Kuenphen Norbuling Restaurant. The restaurant was warm and inviting, with rustic decor and friendly staff. I enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Bhutanese cuisine, including *Ema Datshi* (of course!), *momos*, and *red rice*. The flavors were rich and authentic, a true taste of Bhutanese hospitality. From my table, I could see the panoramic views of the valley, enhancing the dining experience. The staff were eager to share their recommendations and insights about the area, adding a personal touch to the meal.

With my stomach full and my spirit rejuvenated, I made my way to the Black-necked Crane Visitor Centre. This was the part of the day I had been most looking forward to. Phobjikha Valley is the winter home of the endangered black-necked cranes, and I was eager to learn more about these magnificent birds. The visitor center is well-equipped with information on the cranes and the valley's environment. I spent a long time in the observation room, peering through the high-powered telescope and spotting scopes. I was lucky enough to see several cranes feeding in the marshlands, their elegant forms a sight to behold. I learned about the conservation efforts in place to protect the cranes and their habitat, which was both inspiring and reassuring. I made a mental note to donate to the Royal Society for Protection of Nature, they are doing such important work.

The center also housed Karma, an injured black-necked crane who was discovered as an eight-month-old with a broken wing and now lives in a neighboring enclosure. I felt a pang of sadness for Karma, but also gratitude for the care she was receiving. Her presence served as a poignant reminder of the fragility of these creatures and the importance of conservation efforts. I was glad I hadn't forgotten my binoculars, as they enhanced the viewing experience immensely.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the valley, I decided to treat myself to a drink at Phuntsho Shop and Bar. It was a small, unassuming place, but it had a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I ordered a local beer and sat outside, soaking in the last rays of sunlight. I struck up a conversation with a local farmer, who shared stories about his life in the valley. He spoke with such passion and pride about his community and the unique way of life they had preserved. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with people and understanding different cultures.

Dinner was at Gadhen Lhayul Restaurant, and it was the perfect end to a perfect day. The restaurant is known for its authentic Asian culinary offerings, and I wasn't disappointed. I savored every bite of the flavorful dishes, reflecting on the day's adventures. The warm and friendly atmosphere of the restaurant made me feel right at home. It was a fitting conclusion to a day spent exploring the natural beauty and cultural richness of Phobjikha Valley.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Shasila Nature Trail and visit Laksay Kayso. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery in this magical valley. I'm also keen to try Pangkhab restaurant jungomlo for breakfast, K. B RESTAURANT (Thali Special) for lunch, and Raven Restaurant for dinner. Before heading out, I'll need to stop by Migma General Shop for a few essentials.
As I write this, nestled in my cozy guesthouse, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude. Today was a reminder of the simple joys in life: the beauty of nature, the warmth of human connection, and the thrill of exploration. Phobjikha Valley has captured my heart, and I know I will carry its serenity with me long after I leave. I think Liam would love it here, maybe next time we can come together. It would be amazing to share this experience with him.
Tonight, I'll sleep soundly, dreaming of black-necked cranes and rolling green hills. Tomorrow, another adventure awaits.
And as I drifted off to sleep, I thought about the Viking rune pendant I always wear. It felt like a good luck charm, guiding me on my journey and connecting me to my heritage. It was a small but meaningful reminder of where I came from and where I was going. It serves as a reminder that every journey, no matter how far, is a journey back to oneself. As I continue my adventure, I carry the spirit of Norway with me, embracing the unknown with open arms and a curious heart. It reminds me of the resilience and strength of my ancestors, and I feel a deep connection to my roots. Perhaps that's why I'm drawn to places like Phobjikha Valley, where the traditions and values of the past are still alive and well. It's a reminder that even in the modern world, there are still places where the old ways endure, and where the wisdom of our ancestors can guide us on our path.
Goodnight from Phobjikha Valley.
