Wandering Through Eastern Bhutan

Today was a day of transitions, both geographically and experientially, as I journeyed further into the heart of Bhutan. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Phobjikha Valley, I ventured eastward, eager to soak in the sights and sounds of a new region. It was a day filled with breathtaking vistas, historical insights, and the warm hospitality that seems to permeate every corner of this enchanting kingdom. The journey reminded me why I traded the predictable life back in Banff for the unpredictable allure of the open road, camera in hand.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yangkhil Restaurant. The restaurant was very nice and the Bhutanese dishes gave me a true taste of the local cuisine, setting a positive tone for the adventures that lay ahead. It's funny, I've found that the simplest meals often leave the most lasting impressions, especially when shared with friendly faces.

The first major stop was the viewpoint at Gyalpozhing, Mongar. The drive itself was something out of a movie, the road winding through hills and valleys. When I finally reached the viewpoint, I was greeted by a panoramic vista that stretched as far as the eye could see. The Gyalpozhing View Point offered sweeping views of lush hills, valleys and distant mountains. I spent a good hour there, simply breathing in the fresh mountain air and capturing as many photos as I could. It was the kind of place that makes you feel incredibly small, yet deeply connected to the world around you.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of the world, where nature whispers its secrets to those who listen.

After soaking in the view, I continued my journey towards Sha Khothangkha. This destination was more than just a place; it was a step back in time. Sha Khothangkha holds a special place in Bhutanese history. Dungsay Gaton, one of the sons of Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, settled here, building Wachen Dzong, and his descendants became known as Wachen Zhelngo. The area is also linked to the local deity Radrap, a guardian spirit of Wangdue Phodrang, revered by the locals. The historical and spiritual significance of Sha Khothangkha was palpable, and I felt a sense of reverence as I walked through the area. It was a reminder that every place has a story to tell, if only we take the time to listen.

Lunch was at the Gangtey Tent Resort, a glamping destination known for its luxurious accommodations and authentic Bhutanese cuisine. I decided to stop here for lunch and was not disappointed. The resort's restaurant served delectable Bhutanese cuisine, offering a culinary journey through the region's rich cultural heritage. The blend of comfort and nature made it a unique experience, and I made a mental note to consider staying there on a future trip.

As the day wound down, I found myself at the Himalayan Bar. It was in the town of Thinyelgang. This bar provides a welcoming atmosphere where travelers and locals alike can gather to enjoy refreshing drinks and the company of good friends. I had a chance to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The bar itself was cozy and inviting, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals and fellow travelers. Sampling local beverages and listening to local musicians, it was the perfect way to end the day.

Before heading back towards my accommodation, I stopped for dinner at Kuenkyi Yangzoed Diner in Babesa. This diner is renowned for its authentic Bhutanese dishes, offering a true glimpse into the country's rich culinary heritage. The spicy curries and flavorful stews were a delicious end to a long day of exploration.

Tomorrow, I'll be venturing towards Bubja Waterfall and Tongphu Te, eager to capture more of Bhutan's natural beauty through my lens. Liam would have loved these views, he always appreciated a good waterfall. I'm also planning to stop by K-L Varieties - Deals in: General & Stationeries, a local shop, to pick up some postcards and small souvenirs for the family back home. It's the little things that often mean the most, and I want to make sure everyone knows I'm thinking of them, even from this far-flung corner of the world.

As I sit here, reflecting on the day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had and the people I've met. Bhutan continues to surprise and delight me at every turn, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. The journey is far from over, and I'm eager to continue exploring this magical kingdom, one photograph at a time.

This trip has been a fantastic reminder that life's greatest treasures are often found in the simplest of moments, shared with the kindest of souls. I feel refreshed and inspired, ready to take on whatever adventures lie ahead. Perhaps I'll even try my hand at knitting some traditional Norwegian patterns, inspired by the vibrant textiles I've seen here. Until then, goodnight from Bhutan, and may your own journeys be filled with wonder and discovery.
