First Impressions of the Blue Pearl

Chefchaouen, they call it the Blue Pearl, and today, it lived up to its name and so much more. After a long journey from Kingston to Tangier and then a scenic drive with my friends through the Rif Mountains, I finally arrived in this enchanting city. It’s only the first day of our 14-day cultural immersion, and I already know this trip will be one for the books.

The drive itself was breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the Moroccan countryside. The anticipation had been building ever since Liam and Nadia waved goodbye at the airport in Kingston. I missed them already, but I knew this adventure with my friends was something special, a chance to reconnect with myself and explore a culture so different from my own. Stepping into Chefchaouen felt like entering another world. The city unfolded before us in a mesmerizing gradient of blues, from the deepest indigo to the softest sky blue, a breathtaking sight that immediately captivated my senses. The August sun was warm, but not unbearable, a pleasant contrast to the Canadian summer I had left behind. The air was filled with the scent of spices, mint tea, and something uniquely Moroccan that I couldn't quite place but found incredibly inviting. We made our way to Hotel Casa Miguel, our cozy home for the next two weeks, eager to drop off our bags and dive into the heart of the blue city. We were all so excited to finally be here and experience it together.

Wandering the Chefchaouen Medina

The first item on our itinerary was, of course, the Chefchaouen Medina.
Walking through the Medina felt like stepping into a dream. Every corner turned revealed a new, picture-perfect scene: narrow, winding alleyways, terracotta-tiled houses with stunning doorways, and picturesque courtyards. The blue-washed walls created a sense of tranquility and calm, a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of city life. I made a mental note to buy a small canvas depicting these scenes before leaving, a perfect memento of this experience.

The medina was teeming with life, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists. Children played in the streets, their laughter echoing through the alleyways. Shopkeepers displayed their wares, a colorful array of textiles, leather goods, and spices. The air was filled with the sounds of bartering and friendly chatter. My friends and I wandered aimlessly, getting delightfully lost in the maze-like streets. I found myself drawn to the intricate details of the architecture, the ornate doorways, and the delicate patterns painted on the walls. I paused frequently to capture the beauty around me, knowing that photos could never truly do justice to the experience. I was sure to have my camera ready, as it is one of my trip essentials.

A Visit to the Kasbah

Next on our list was the Kasbah, a 15th-century fortress located in Plaza Uta el Hamman. The Kasbah was built by Moulay Ali ibn Rachid to protect the city from Portuguese invasions. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the contrast between the Kasbah's clay-brown walls and the blue hues of the Medina. The Kasbah felt like a sanctuary of calm, with a beautiful Andalusian-style garden, a former prison, and a small ethnographic museum.

We explored the museum, which offered a fascinating glimpse into the history and culture of Chefchaouen and Northern Morocco. On display were traditional musical instruments, pottery, sculptures, and embroideries. I was particularly drawn to a collection of historical weapons, imagining the fortress under siege, its defenders bravely fighting to protect their home. Climbing to the top of the Kasbah, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains. From this vantage point, the blue of Chefchaouen seemed to stretch out endlessly, blending seamlessly with the sky. I could spot Plaza Uta el Hamman from above, with the Grand Mosque standing tall. The rooftop terrace offered an exceptional panorama of the city.

Lunch at Restaurant Bab Ssour

By lunchtime, we were ravenous. Following a recommendation, we headed to Restaurant Bab Ssour for lunch. Finding it was a little tricky as it was located down some steps near Plaza Uta el-Hamman, but it was well worth the effort.

The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. The menu featured a range of traditional Moroccan dishes, and after some deliberation, I opted for the goat tagine, while my friends chose a vegetable tagine and lentil soup. The food was delicious, bursting with flavor and spices. My tagine was tender and well-spiced, and the lentil soup was hearty and comforting. We finished our meal with sweet yogurt for dessert and, of course, some traditional Moroccan mint tea.

Plaza Uta el Hamman and B & H Art Shop

After lunch, we strolled through Plaza Uta el Hamman, the heart of Chefchaouen. The plaza was bustling with activity, lined with cafes, restaurants, and artisan shops. We paused to admire the Grand Mosque, its octagonal minaret towering over the square. The square is the perfect place to relax and watch daily life unfold.

Our final stop for the day was B & H Art Shop. I was immediately drawn to the colorful displays of handmade garments, each piece infused with local flair. The shop was adorned with beautiful decorations reflecting Chefchaouen’s rich heritage, creating a picturesque spot. I spent a happy hour browsing the unique clothing items, admiring the intricate details and vibrant colors. I ended up buying a beautiful, hand-embroidered scarf, a perfect reminder of my time in Chefchaouen.

Dinner at Restaurant Lalla Messaouda

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Restaurant Lalla Messaouda for dinner. The restaurant had a warm, inviting atmosphere, and the decor was beautiful. We chose a table on the terrace, offering stunning views of the city.

The menu featured a range of Moroccan dishes, and I decided to try the Moroccan lamb. My friends opted for the tagine and the Moroccan chicken. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. The lamb was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, and the tagine was rich and aromatic. We finished our meal with some delicious Moroccan pastries and mint tea. The cozy atmosphere makes it perfect for couples.

A Perfect End to the First Day

As we walked back to our hotel, the city was bathed in a soft, blue light. The stars twinkled above, and the air was cool and crisp. I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude. Chefchaouen had exceeded all my expectations. It was more than just a pretty picture; it was an experience that nourished the soul and awakened the senses. I couldn’t wait to see what tomorrow would bring, with plans to visit Ras El Ma and the Blue House Town. I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of blue streets and the magic of Morocco.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Ras El Ma, where fresh mountain springs meet the rhythms of daily local life, and the Blue House Town. I’m also looking forward to experiencing Bar Oum Rabie, a local bar, in the evening.

I am already looking forward to sharing more stories and photos as this adventure unfolds. Stay tuned for more tales from the Blue Pearl!
