Sunday Adventures in Hoi An
Today was a whirlwind of cultural immersion, adrenaline, and, of course, fantastic food. Hoi An continues to surprise me with its blend of history, adventure, and culinary artistry. I couldn't wait to dive into the day's itinerary, which promised a mix of ancient artifacts, scenic rides, and delicious meals.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Tra Que Water Wheel Restaurant & Cooking Classes [i]. I was eager to experience the highly recommended cooking class, but first, I needed some fuel for the day. The restaurant is located in the heart of Tra Que herb village, a charming and rustic setting that immediately puts you at ease. Surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of rural life, it was the perfect spot to start my day. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese breakfast: a steaming bowl of Pho, brimming with fresh herbs and flavorful broth. It was the ideal way to prepare for the day ahead.

After breakfast, I made my way to the Museum of Trade Ceramics. As someone who appreciates history and the stories behind artifacts, I was excited to explore this cultural gem. Housed in a beautifully restored traditional Vietnamese building, the museum offers a glimpse into Hoi An's rich history as a major trading port. The museum isn't just a display of ceramics; it's a journey through the trade routes that transformed Hoi An from a simple port town into a bustling international trade center.

It's fascinating to see how these delicate objects tell tales of cultural exchange and economic prosperity.
The exhibits feature a wide array of pottery and porcelain artifacts from various parts of Asia and the Middle East, some dating back to the 15th century. I was particularly fascinated by the Chinese ceramic artifacts from the Ming and Qing dynasties, each piece showcasing unique shapes and design styles. Walking through the museum, I could almost hear the echoes of merchants haggling over prices and the bustling activity of the port.
After immersing myself in history, it was time for a change of pace. I had booked a Motorbike Day Tour with Hoi An Adventures, and I was ready for some adrenaline. I met my guide, who was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and after a quick safety briefing, we were off! I'm not usually one for riding motorbikes, especially in a foreign country, but I felt surprisingly safe and comfortable with my experienced driver. We cruised through the countryside, passing rice paddies, water buffalos, and smiling locals. The wind in my hair and the sun on my face, I felt a sense of freedom and adventure that I hadn't experienced in a while. It was a far cry from the busy streets of Berlin, and I reveled in the change of scenery.

Our first stop was a local fishing village, where I watched fishermen mend their nets and boats bobbing gently in the water. It was a glimpse into a traditional way of life that has remained unchanged for generations. We then visited a carpentry site, where skilled artisans were crafting intricate wooden sculptures. I even got a chance to try my hand at wood carving, which was much harder than it looked! I didn't produce anything worthy of display, but I certainly gained a newfound appreciation for the craft.
For lunch, my guide took me to Galina Restaurant in Da Nang. The restaurant had a luxurious and spacious setting with enthusiastic and friendly staff. They offered a seafood buffet, but I opted for a traditional Vietnamese dish: Cao Lau noodles, a Hoi An specialty. The noodles were perfectly chewy, and the pork was tender and flavorful. It was the perfect midday meal to replenish my energy.

Back on the motorbike, we continued our adventure through the countryside. We stopped at an organic vegetable village, where farmers tend to their crops using traditional methods. The air was filled with the fragrant scent of herbs, and the vibrant colors of the vegetables were a feast for the eyes. It reminded me of the importance of fresh, local ingredients, something I always strive for in my own cooking.
As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Hoi An. The golden light cast a magical glow over the landscape, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences I had today. The motorbike tour was a fantastic way to see the real Hoi An, away from the tourist crowds and immersed in the beauty of the countryside.
For dinner, I decided to try Kumquat BBQ Restaurant Cooking Class, another highly recommended spot. I was excited to try their BBQ dishes, and I wasn't disappointed. I ordered the Bò Nướng Ngũ Vị (BBQ Beef with Five Spices), and it was absolutely delicious. The beef was tender and flavorful, and the five spices added a unique and aromatic touch. The restaurant is owned by a family with three generations, and you can feel the warmth and hospitality in every dish.

To cap off the evening, I headed to The Deck Hoi An for a drink. As the loftiest rooftop bar in Hoi An, it offers spectacular views of the ancient town and the Thu Bon River. I ordered one of their signature cocktails, inspired by local tales, and savored the moment. The atmosphere was relaxed and sophisticated, and the views were simply breathtaking. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and discovery.

As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude. Hoi An has a way of captivating you with its charm and authenticity. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the ancient town more in depth and maybe even try my hand at making lanterns [Carlos plans to visit Hoi An ancient town and take a lantern making class with Lynn tomorrow]. I'm also considering a visit to the Rubin Cloth Shop, as Lena had asked me to bring her back some silk [Carlos plans to visit Rubin Cloth Shop tomorrow].
But for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of adventures.
