A Culinary and Cultural Solo Journey in Hoi An
Day 14: A Farewell Feast: Hoi An's Final Flavors
Savoring the last moments in Hoi An with terracotta artistry, ancient houses, and unforgettable Vietnamese cuisine on my final day.
Adios, Hoi An!
As my culinary and cultural journey in Hoi An draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past two weeks. From mastering Vietnamese dishes in a cooking class to wandering through lantern-lit streets, this charming town has captured my heart. Today, on my final day, I'm determined to soak up every last bit of its magic, ensuring I leave with memories and flavors that will last a lifetime.
My last day in Hoi An began, as many others did, with a hearty breakfast at Nhan's Kitchen. I savored every bite of the flavorful eggplant with lemongrass and tofu, a dish that had become a personal favorite. The fresh ingredients and traditional cooking techniques made it a culinary experience I won't soon forget. It's a small, family-run place that truly captures the heart of Vietnamese cuisine. I made sure to thank the staff for their hospitality; their warm smiles and attentiveness added so much to the experience.

With a full stomach and a sense of excitement, I set off to explore Thanh Hà Terracotta Park. The park celebrates the 400-year-long history of pottery making in the Thanh Ha village, and I was eager to witness the artistry firsthand. The park itself is a testament to creativity, with impressive structures and intricate ceramic models. It’s located a bit outside the main town, about a 10-minute ride, but the journey was worth it.

Wandering through the park, I was amazed by the miniature world featuring ceramic models of famous landmarks from around the globe. Seeing the Colosseum, Egyptian pyramids, and even the Taj Mahal, all crafted from terracotta, was truly impressive. I also enjoyed the Vietnamese section, which showcased iconic sites like Hoi An Ancient Town and the Japanese Bridge. The distinctive orange hue of Thanh Ha pottery gave each model a unique charm.
The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in how those places change you.
Of course, I couldn't resist trying my hand at pottery making. With the guidance of a skilled artisan, I sat at the potter's wheel and attempted to shape a lump of clay into something resembling a bowl. It was much harder than it looked, but the experience was incredibly rewarding. Feeling the cool, wet clay between my fingers and watching it slowly transform was a truly meditative experience. I even got to decorate my creation with traditional patterns, adding a personal touch. I’m not sure it will survive the trip back to Berlin, but I’ll certainly try to bring it home as a memento of my time here.
After immersing myself in terracotta artistry, I headed back towards the Ancient Town to visit The Old House of Phung Hung. This historic house, over 240 years old, offers a glimpse into the life of Hoi An's merchant class. The house is located near the Japanese Bridge, making it easy to find. As I stepped inside, I was immediately transported back in time.

The architecture of the house is a fascinating blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese influences. The intricate carvings, sturdy wooden frames, and double-tiled roofs spoke of a rich history. I learned that the house has been home to eight generations of the same family, each contributing to its preservation and unique character.
The outer section of the house, once a shop, now serves as a reception area. I admired the altars for ancestors and the unique shell-shaped wooden ceiling in the front balcony. The ornate carp motifs on the beam brackets caught my eye, symbolizing luck, prosperity, and authority. Climbing to the second floor, I was struck by the elegant balustrades and the sturdy ironwood columns. The Japanese-style roof allowed for excellent air circulation, keeping the interior cool and comfortable.
For lunch, I decided to venture out to An Bang Beach Village Restaurant. I had heard so much about the fresh seafood and welcoming atmosphere that I couldn't resist. The restaurant is tucked away in a hidden alley, adding to its charm. The vibrant yellow and blue decorations created a cheerful and inviting ambiance.

I was greeted by the owner, who made me feel instantly at home. I ordered the grilled red snapper, a local specialty, and it was absolutely divine. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. As I savored each bite, I watched the waves crashing on the shore and felt a sense of contentment wash over me. The staff even surprised me with complimentary mangoes after my meal, a gesture that truly embodied the warmth and hospitality of Hoi An.
As the sun began to set, I made my way back to town for my final dinner at Madam Kieu Vietnamese Restaurant. Located on lantern street, near the night market and the Japanese bridge, the restaurant offered stunning views of the Thu Bon River. I secured a spot on the balcony and watched as the boats glided along the water, their lights reflecting in the gentle current.

Madam Kieu is known for its diverse Vietnamese dishes made with the freshest local ingredients. I decided to try the Hoi An beef pho, a local favorite. The noodles were perfectly chewy, the broth rich and flavorful, and the beef tender and sweet. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey in Hoi An, a final taste of the incredible flavors I had come to love.
After dinner, I couldn't resist a final visit to The Button, a lively bar known for its vibrant atmosphere. I ordered a local beer and listened to the music, soaking in the energy of the night. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to Hoi An, a final toast to the memories I had made.

The warmth of the people, the beauty of the architecture, and the explosion of flavors will forever be etched in my memory.
