A Culinary and Cultural Solo Journey in Hoi An
Day 3: A Day of Serenity and Art in Hoi An's Countryside
Discover the tranquil beauty of Hoi An's rice fields and vibrant art scene, a perfect blend of nature and culture on day three of my solo journey.
Embracing Hoi An's Quiet Charms
Today was about escaping the bustling heart of Hoi An and venturing into the serene countryside, a welcome change of pace that allowed me to connect with the land and its people. It was a day of simple pleasures, artistic discoveries, and culinary delights, all woven together by the gentle rhythm of rural Vietnamese life.
The day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast. I headed to Nhan's kitchen, a local gem I'd read about, and it didn't disappoint. The reviews online raved about the eggplant lemongrass tofu, and I had to try it. The explosion of flavors was the perfect start to a day of exploration. The family-run restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and I felt right at home as I enjoyed my meal.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards the Cam Thanh Rice Fields. October in Hoi An is a transitional period, with the weather offering a mix of warm sunshine and occasional rain. Luckily, the weather was kind to me today, with gentle breezes moderating the humidity. I decided to embrace the local way of getting around and rented a bicycle, feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin as I pedaled through the narrow streets.
The ride to the rice fields was an experience in itself, passing by colorful houses and friendly locals going about their daily lives. As I approached Cam Thanh, the landscape transformed into a sea of green, with rice paddies stretching as far as the eye could see. Farmers were tending to their crops, their conical hats bobbing in the distance, a timeless scene that spoke volumes about the enduring traditions of this region.
I spent a couple of hours cycling through the fields, stopping to take photos and soak in the tranquility. It's amazing how peaceful it is, away from the noise of the town. I even saw some water buffalo lazily grazing, adding to the idyllic charm. October isn't the peak season for the vibrant green rice shoots, but the fields still possessed a rustic beauty that captivated me.

The beauty of Hoi An lies not only in its ancient architecture but also in the serene landscapes that surround it, offering a glimpse into the soul of rural Vietnam.
For lunch, I had made a reservation at the Tra Que Vegetable Village Restaurant, eager to sample the fresh, locally grown produce. Tra Que is known for its organic farming methods, using seaweed from the nearby river to fertilize the vegetables. The restaurant was nestled amidst the gardens, a true farm-to-table experience. I opted for a traditional Cao Lau dish, a Hoi An specialty, with the freshest herbs and vegetables I’ve ever tasted. It was simple, yet incredibly flavorful, a testament to the quality of the ingredients. I learned that these herbs contribute to the unique flavor of many famous dishes of Hoi An.

After a satisfying lunch, I decided to immerse myself further in the local culture with a visit to Reaching Out Arts & Crafts. This social enterprise supports artisans with disabilities, offering them a platform to showcase their talents and earn a livelihood. The shop was filled with beautiful handmade crafts, from jewelry and ceramics to textiles and woodwork. I was particularly drawn to the intricate lanterns, each one a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans.

I ended up buying a few small gifts for Lena and Mateo, knowing they would appreciate the unique craftsmanship and the story behind each piece. It felt good to support such a worthy cause, knowing that my purchase was making a difference in someone's life. I also took a tour of the workshop and met some of the artisans, learning about their craft and their personal journeys. It was a humbling and inspiring experience, reminding me of the importance of inclusivity and empowerment.
Before heading back to the hotel, I made a stop at the Rehahn Gallery. I’ve long admired Rehahn's work, his ability to capture the soul of Vietnam and its people through his lens. The gallery showcased his iconic photographs, portraits of ethnic minorities, and stunning landscapes. I was particularly moved by his Precious Heritage Collection, a tribute to the diverse ethnic communities of Vietnam.

The collection featured striking portraits, traditional costumes, and stories from Rehahn's travels across the country. It was a powerful reminder of the rich cultural tapestry of Vietnam and the importance of preserving its heritage. I learned that Rehahn spent eight years visiting the 54 country ethnic groups while collecting photos, costumes and artifacts.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over Hoi An, I made my way to SECRET GARDEN HOIAN for dinner. This restaurant is tucked away in a hidden laneway, a peaceful oasis in the heart of the old town. The setting was magical, with lush greenery, a fish pond, and soft lighting creating a romantic ambiance. I enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Vietnamese dishes, savoring the flavors and the tranquility of the surroundings.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had experienced, from the serene rice fields to the vibrant art scene. It was a day of simple pleasures, cultural immersion, and culinary delights, a perfect blend of everything I love about traveling. It was a reminder that sometimes the best experiences are found off the beaten path, in the quiet corners of a destination, where you can connect with the land and its people on a deeper level. It’s funny, because I almost forgot to pack sunscreen and an umbrella, but thankfully the weather was on my side today.
Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit Cua Dai Beach and the My Son Sanctuary. I’m also hoping to grab breakfast at Little Faifo Restaurant, lunch at HOME Hoi An, and dinner at Red Dragon Restaurant, and maybe even check out Soul Kitchen. I’m excited for another day of exploration and discovery in this charming town. I'm already looking forward to sharing more stories and experiences with you all. Until then, ¡adiós!
