A Day of Reflection and Flavors

Today was a day of deep dives into the spiritual heart of Morocco and indulging in the local flavors that make this region so special. Moulay Idriss, with its serene atmosphere and rich history, offered a perfect blend of cultural exploration and culinary delight.

The day began with the tantalizing aroma of Moroccan spices wafting from SCORPION HOUSE. Lena and I decided to start our morning with a traditional Moroccan breakfast here. The restaurant is the private home of Mike Richardson of Café Clock. It was a delightful experience, sitting on a terrace overlooking the holy town, savoring freshly baked bread, local honey, and strong, mint-infused tea. I must admit, I felt a pang of guilt leaving Mateo behind with my friends, but I knew he was in good hands, probably playing football with newfound friends.

Fueled and ready, our first stop was the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa. This sacred site is dedicated to the founder of the Aïssawa Sufi brotherhood and is a significant pilgrimage destination. As we approached, the intricate details of the architecture immediately captivated us. The blend of traditional Islamic design with local influences created a unique and awe-inspiring aesthetic.

Inside, the atmosphere was thick with reverence and tranquility. The ornate tilework, the carefully crafted inscriptions, and the soft murmur of prayers created a deeply moving experience. I found myself reflecting on the layers of history and spirituality that permeate this place. Lena, ever the historian, was fascinated by the stories and traditions associated with the mausoleum. We spent a good hour simply absorbing the atmosphere, feeling a connection to the countless pilgrims who have sought solace and blessings here over the centuries.

It's not just about seeing a place, but feeling its soul.

Next on our itinerary was Dar Moulay Idriss. This historical landmark offered a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Moroccan nobility from centuries past. The architecture was stunning, featuring Moorish-Andalusian designs and intricate zellige tilework. Wandering through the halls, I imagined the lives of those who once inhabited this place, the stories they held, and the traditions they upheld. Lena was particularly impressed by the craftsmanship and the attention to detail evident in every corner of the building.

After soaking in the history, it was time for lunch. We headed to Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق, a local spot recommended by a shopkeeper we met earlier. This unassuming café turned out to be a culinary gem. The menu featured traditional Moroccan dishes, and we opted for a tagine and some grilled kebabs. The flavors were incredible – rich, aromatic, and bursting with local spices. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploration. While enjoying our meal, we watched locals chatting and laughing, kids playing in the nearby square, and the general hustle and bustle of daily life. It was a slice of authentic Moroccan life that I truly appreciated.

In the afternoon, we decided to explore the local shops around زيارة باب مولاي إدريس [Visit Bab Moulay Idriss]. This bustling area was a sensory overload, with vibrant colors, exotic scents, and the constant chatter of vendors and shoppers. I was on the hunt for some unique souvenirs to bring back to Berlin. Mateo had requested a football, of course, and Lena was eyeing some handwoven textiles.

We wandered through the narrow streets, haggling for prices and admiring the craftsmanship of the local artisans. I picked up a beautiful leather-bound journal for myself, perfect for jotting down my travel musings. Lena found a stunning silk scarf, its colors reflecting the vibrant hues of Morocco. Mateo, as promised, got his football, which he'll no doubt kick around our apartment back in Berlin.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Al Andaloussiya Diyafa for dinner. This charming Moroccan house offered panoramic views of Volubilis and the surrounding areas from its furnished terrace. The setting was magical, with the sun setting over the hills, casting a warm golden glow on the landscape.

The dinner was a feast for the senses. We savored traditional Moroccan dishes, each bite a burst of flavor and aroma. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel like honored guests in their home. Over dinner, Lena and I reminisced about our day, sharing our favorite moments and reflecting on the beauty and spirituality of Moulay Idriss.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our Moroccan adventure. We plan to visit Meknes and Khemis Gate. I’m looking forward to exploring these historical sites and soaking in the last bit of Moroccan culture before heading back to Berlin. We might even stop by La Colombe Blanche for a nightcap. As I sit here, penning these thoughts, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve had and the memories we’ve created. Morocco, you have truly captured my heart.

As I prepare for our final day, I can't help but feel a tinge of sadness that our journey is coming to an end. However, I know that the memories and experiences we've gathered here will stay with us long after we've returned to Berlin. I'm already looking forward to sharing stories with Mateo and planning our next adventure.

The warmth of the Moroccan people, the richness of the culture, and the beauty of the landscape have left an indelible mark on my soul. I came here seeking adventure and new experiences, and I found so much more. I found a connection to history, a sense of spirituality, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.

And now, as the stars begin to twinkle in the Moroccan sky, I bid you goodnight. Until tomorrow, may your dreams be filled with the magic and wonder of this incredible land.
