Kyoto's Contrasts: Serenity, Heights, and History

Today in Kyoto was a fascinating blend of the old and the new, a journey through spiritual havens, modern marvels, and the history of Japanese railways. It’s amazing how much this city manages to pack into a single day, and I'm excited to share it all with you.

Our day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Saishuan Shiraki. Lena and Mateo were excited to try new things, and I was eager to introduce them to the subtle flavors of Japanese cuisine. It’s a small place, very cozy, and I felt very welcome.

Finding Peace at Higashi Hongan-ji Temple

After breakfast, we made our way to Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. The temple, founded in 1602 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, stands as one of the two head temples of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Pure Land Buddhism. As we approached the Founder's Hall, the largest wooden building in Kyoto, I was immediately struck by its grandeur. The intricate details and sheer scale of the structure were awe-inspiring.

Inside, the atmosphere was serene and contemplative. Mateo, surprisingly, was captivated by the vast, tatami-matted floor and the towering pillars that supported the high ceiling. Lena and I took a moment to sit in silence, absorbing the peaceful ambiance of the hall. The temple has been rebuilt several times due to fires, with the current structure dating back to 1895. I found it fascinating how such a monumental building could be repeatedly destroyed and resurrected, each time retaining its spiritual essence. We explored the Amida Hall, admiring the golden Amida Buddha and the intricate Meiji-period artwork. The temple's history is intertwined with the political landscape of Japan, serving as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and community.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest of places.

Kyoto from Above: A Visit to Kyoto Tower

Next on our itinerary was the iconic Kyoto Tower. Rising 131 meters above the city, Kyoto Tower offers panoramic views of Kyoto's sprawling cityscape. It's conveniently located near Kyoto Station, making it easily accessible for travelers. While the tower's modern design stands in stark contrast to the traditional architecture that dominates Kyoto, it has become a beloved symbol of the city. We took the elevator to the observation deck, where we were greeted by breathtaking views of Kyoto's temples, gardens, and surrounding mountains. Mateo was thrilled to spot Kiyomizu-dera Temple and other famous landmarks from above. The tower also features tourist information monitors that provide details about the various sights visible from the deck.

I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement as I pointed out the places we had already visited and those we planned to explore in the coming days. Lena, always the pragmatist, appreciated the clear signage and modern amenities that made our visit comfortable and enjoyable. We learned that Kyoto Tower was built in 1964 to commemorate the Tokyo Olympics, and since then, it has become an integral part of Kyoto's identity. The tower also houses a hotel, a public bath, and a commercial complex, making it a versatile destination for tourists and locals alike. It was fun to see the city from a different perspective, trading the ancient ground for a modern sky view.

All Aboard: Exploring the Kyoto Railway Museum

Our final stop for the day was the Kyoto Railway Museum, a must-visit for any train enthusiast. The museum showcases the history of Japanese railways, with a vast collection of locomotives, train cars, and railway artifacts. As we entered the museum, Mateo's eyes lit up with excitement. He ran from one exhibit to another, marveling at the steam locomotives, electric trains, and shinkansen bullet trains on display. The museum is divided into several exhibition areas, including a main hall, a roundhouse, and a former Nijo Station building. We explored the roundhouse, which houses Japan's largest collection of well-preserved steam locomotives. I was impressed by the sheer size and engineering of these magnificent machines. Mateo, of course, wanted to climb aboard every train he could. The museum also features interactive exhibits where visitors can perform the duties of a train conductor or drive a train simulator. Mateo eagerly took his turn at the train simulator, pretending to navigate the Japanese countryside. Lena and I enjoyed learning about the history of Japanese railways and the technological advancements that have shaped the country's transportation system. The museum is not only a tribute to the past but also a celebration of innovation and progress.

Before leaving, we stopped by the Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store. I had read that it was a pop-up shop featuring anime-related products from Kyoto Animation. Mateo is a big fan of anime, so I thought it would be a fun surprise for him. Unfortunately, it seems the shop was only extended until August 31, 2024, so it was no longer there. I did find some amazing souvenirs in ASTY Road, though.

A Culinary Conclusion

For dinner, we had a reservation at Kikunoi Roan, a renowned restaurant known for its exquisite kaiseki cuisine. The restaurant offers a multi-course meal that showcases the seasonal flavors of Kyoto. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. We savored the delicate flavors and textures, appreciating the skill and artistry of the chefs. It was a fitting end to a day filled with cultural immersion and exploration.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Sanjusangendo Temple, Chionin Temple, and the Kyoto National Museum. I am particularly excited about visiting Sanjusangendo Temple, which houses 1,001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. I have heard that it is a truly awe-inspiring sight.

Before I close for the night, I'd like to share a quote that resonated with me today:

The journey of a lifetime starts with the turning of a page.

Good night from Kyoto!

P.S. I almost forgot! I need to remember to buy a Japanese phrasebook. It would be so helpful to have some basic phrases at my fingertips. I also realized that I'm running low on memory cards for my camera. I need to pick up some extras tomorrow so I don't miss any photo opportunities.
