Chasing Whirlpools in Naruto
Today was all about embracing the raw power of nature and savoring the local culture here in Tokushima. We set out early, eager to witness the famed Naruto Whirlpools, and ended the day with a delightful exploration of the city's culinary scene. Let me tell you all about it!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Dining Room Hibari. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Hans went for a more western-style toast and eggs. Sofia, of course, chose the cutest-looking pastry she could find. Fueled up, we drove towards Naruto, anticipation building with every kilometer. I was a little worried that we had forgotten the phrasebook, but Hans assured me that he had downloaded a translation app on his phone.
Arriving at the Naruto Strait, the air was thick with the salty scent of the ocean. We decided to experience the whirlpools from the Tokushima Prefectural Uzu-no-Michi Walkway. This walkway extends under the Onaruto Bridge, offering a thrilling vantage point 45 meters above the swirling waters. Sofia was a bit apprehensive at first, especially with the glass floor sections, but her adventurous spirit quickly took over. It was a bit scary, but also very exciting! I must admit, even I felt a little nervous looking down, but the view was absolutely worth it.

The sheer force of the water as the Seto Inland Sea met the Pacific Ocean was mesmerizing. The whirlpools formed and dissipated in a matter of moments, a constant dance of nature’s power. We learned that the best time to see them is during high and low tides, and we were lucky enough to catch a particularly active period. The kids were amazed by the sheer power of the water. Hans, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the bridge's construction and how it withstood the elements. I was just happy I didn't forget my camera!
The Naruto Whirlpools are a testament to the earth's raw power, a reminder that nature's artistry is often the most captivating.
After the exhilarating experience at Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, we were all quite hungry. It was time to sample some local cuisine. For lunch, we chose Tosa Rokkon. I had read about their dedication to using fresh, local ingredients, and I was eager to try some authentic Tosa cuisine. The restaurant was a bit of a drive, but the scenery along the way was beautiful. We drove along the coast and saw many people fishing at the harbor.

Tosa Rokkon did not disappoint. We started with some fresh sashimi, the fish practically melting in our mouths. Hans tried the charcoal flamed skipjack tuna, a local specialty, and raved about the smoky flavor. Sofia, surprisingly, enjoyed the sushi, especially the tamago (egg). I opted for a seasonal vegetable tempura, which was light and crispy. It was great to experience local flavors that are often overlooked by tourists.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we headed back towards Tokushima City for some afternoon shopping. I was hoping to find some unique souvenirs and perhaps a new scarf. Our destination was Minami-Shinmachi Shopping Street. This bustling street offered a mix of local shops and larger department stores. It was a great place to soak in the local atmosphere. I was hoping to find some local crafts, and maybe some ingredients to try some Japanese dishes at home in Bonn. I was thinking of making Katsudon, but I wasn't sure I could find all the right ingredients.
Sofia was immediately drawn to a small shop selling traditional Japanese sweets. She picked out a colorful assortment of candies, while Hans browsed a nearby electronics store. I found a lovely little boutique selling handmade scarves and couldn't resist buying a beautiful silk one with a delicate floral pattern. I also found a small shop selling local pottery. I bought a beautiful teacup and a small vase. The shopkeeper was very friendly and told me all about the local pottery traditions.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Inonakanokawazu for dinner. This restaurant promised a taste of local Tokushima cuisine, and we were excited to try it. It turned out to be a fantastic choice. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We had a private room with a view of a small garden, which was perfect for a family dinner.
We started with some local sake, which was smooth and flavorful. For appetizers, we tried the Awa beef tataki, which was thinly sliced and incredibly tender. Sofia loved the chawanmushi, a savory egg custard. For the main course, Hans and I shared a hot pot with local vegetables and seafood. It was a delicious and comforting way to end the day. Sofia opted for a simpler grilled fish dish, which she devoured in minutes.
As we headed back to our hotel, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible day we had. From the awe-inspiring Naruto Whirlpools to the delicious local cuisine and the vibrant shopping streets, Tokushima had truly captured our hearts. I am so glad we decided to come to Shikoku. This trip has been so rewarding, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we will be exploring the Iya Valley and the Vine Bridge. I have heard that the Iya Valley is one of the most beautiful places in Japan, and I can't wait to see it for myself. I packed my hiking shoes, so I am ready for anything!
Now, as I sit here writing, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. It's moments like these, shared with my family, that make life truly special. And with that, I bid you goodnight from Tokushima, ready for another day of adventure tomorrow!
I almost forgot! I was so happy that I found a postcard of the Naruto Whirlpools in the gift shop at Uzu-no-Michi Walkway. I can't wait to send it to my friends back in Bonn! I know they will be jealous of our adventure here in Shikoku.
