Fez's Embrace: A Day of Serenity and Wonder

Today in Fes was a journey through time and tranquility, a blend of spiritual reverence and natural beauty that left me utterly captivated. From the intricate designs of ancient schools to the peaceful whispers of lush gardens, every moment felt like a step deeper into the heart of Morocco. I'm excited to share these moments with you, hoping to inspire a similar sense of awe and appreciation for this remarkable city.

The day began with a delightful breakfast at Nagham Cafe. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a taste of Moroccan hospitality. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the sweet scent of pastries, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen, a flaky pancake served with honey and cheese, and a strong, sweet coffee that jolted me awake and ready for the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to fuel up before diving into the historical wonders of Fes.

My first stop was the Bou Inania Madrasa, a stunning example of Marinid architecture. As I stepped through the grand entrance, I was immediately struck by the intricate details that adorned every surface. The walls were covered in exquisite zellij tilework, the ceilings were crafted from intricately carved wood, and the floors were paved with smooth marble. Sunlight streamed through the central courtyard, illuminating the delicate patterns and casting a warm glow on the ancient stones. I wandered through the halls, imagining the scholars who had once studied here, their voices echoing through the centuries. The madrasa was not just a school, but a sanctuary of knowledge and a testament to the artistic prowess of the Marinid dynasty.

I paused for a moment, reflecting on the beauty and tranquility of the space. It was a reminder that even in the midst of a bustling city, there are places where one can find peace and contemplation. The Bou Inania Madrasa was more than just a historical site; it was a living testament to the enduring power of art, culture, and spirituality.

The beauty of Fes lies not only in its grand monuments but also in the quiet corners where history and nature intertwine.

Next on my itinerary was Jnan Sbil, a sprawling garden oasis in the heart of Fes. After the intensity of the Medina, the gardens offered a welcome respite, a chance to reconnect with nature and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. As I strolled through the winding paths, I was surrounded by a symphony of sights and sounds. Towering palm trees swayed gently in the breeze, colorful flowers bloomed in vibrant hues, and the soothing sound of water filled the air. The gardens were meticulously manicured, yet they retained a sense of wildness, as if nature had been allowed to run free within the confines of the city.

I found a quiet bench near one of the serene ponds and sat for a while, simply soaking in the atmosphere. Dragonflies flitted across the surface of the water, birds chirped merrily in the trees, and the warm Moroccan sun kissed my skin. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life. I even spotted a few locals enjoying picnics with their families, their laughter and chatter adding to the joyful ambiance. Jnan Sbil was more than just a garden; it was a community gathering place, a sanctuary for locals and tourists alike.

As the afternoon wore on, I made my way to the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II, one of the most sacred sites in Morocco. The mausoleum is dedicated to the founder of Fes, Moulay Idriss II, a revered figure in Moroccan history. Unfortunately, non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mausoleum, but I was still able to appreciate its grandeur from the outside. The intricate carvings, the gleaming mosaics, and the towering minaret all spoke to the importance of this site. I watched as devout Muslims approached the entrance, their faces filled with reverence and respect. The mausoleum was not just a tomb; it was a symbol of faith, a reminder of the enduring legacy of Moulay Idriss II.

The area surrounding the mausoleum, known as the 'Sacred District', buzzed with activity. Vendors sold religious artifacts, pilgrims gathered to pray, and the air was thick with a sense of spirituality. I felt a deep sense of respect for the traditions and beliefs of the Moroccan people. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about understanding different cultures and appreciating the diversity of human experience.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurant Dar Hatim, recommended by several locals as an authentic Fassi experience. The restaurant is set in a beautifully restored family home in the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. Fouad, the owner, greeted me warmly and shared stories of his family's history in Fes. Karima, his wife, prepared a feast of traditional Moroccan dishes, each bursting with flavor and aroma. We started with an array of Moroccan salads, followed by a tagine of tender lamb with prunes and almonds. Every bite was a culinary delight, a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Fes. The ambiance of the restaurant was as delightful as the food. The walls were adorned with intricate tilework, the ceilings were crafted from carved wood, and the courtyard was filled with fragrant flowers. It felt like dining in a living museum, surrounded by the beauty and history of Fes.

As the sun began to set, I sought out Mezzanine, a rooftop bar known for its stunning views of Jnan Sbil. I ordered a glass of Moroccan rosé and settled in to watch the sky transform into a canvas of vibrant colors. The gardens below twinkled with lights, the sounds of the city faded into a gentle hum, and I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

The Mezzanine bar provided a relaxing atmosphere, and it was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring. The view of Jnan Sbil at dusk was magical, and the cool evening breeze was refreshing. It was a reminder that even in a bustling city like Fes, there are always places to find peace and tranquility.

Dinner was at Les Jardins de Sheherazade, a restaurant that promised an enchanting dining experience. The restaurant was set in a lush garden, filled with fragrant flowers and twinkling lights. The menu featured a mix of Moroccan and international dishes, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients. I opted for a traditional tagine, slow-cooked with aromatic spices and tender meat. The flavors were exquisite, a testament to the culinary artistry of the Moroccan chefs. The ambiance of the restaurant was magical, a perfect blend of romance and tranquility. As I savored my meal, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and wonder of Fes.

As I reflect on my day in Fes, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. This city has a way of captivating the senses and nourishing the soul. From the intricate designs of the madrasas to the peaceful whispers of the gardens, every moment felt like a step deeper into the heart of Morocco. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, as I plan to visit the Al Attarine Madrasa, Dar Batha Museum and embark on a tour to Volubilis. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of this day, a reminder that the most beautiful journeys are often the ones that lead us to unexpected places.

I am also looking forward to the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music which begins on May 16th, a celebration of cultural and spiritual renewal. It is an event that brings together artists and enthusiasts from around the globe. I am hoping to extend my stay to be able to take part in the festivities.

Perhaps one day I can convince Hans to join me. I know he would appreciate the history and culture, even if he might complain about the walking! But for now, I'll continue to explore this enchanting city on my own, soaking in its beauty and sharing my experiences with you.
