Wandering Through Time
Today was a day of wandering, a day where we let the spirit of San Cristobal de las Casas guide our feet and fill our senses. It’s funny how sometimes the best travel days are the ones without a rigid plan, where you simply allow yourself to be absorbed by the atmosphere of a new place. With Umar, Aisha, and I together, every corner turned was a new adventure waiting to unfold.
Our morning began, as most good mornings do, with a hearty breakfast. We decided to try Jardines de San Cristóbal. The reviews promised a beautiful garden setting, and it certainly delivered. The vibrant flowers and tranquil atmosphere were the perfect way to start our day. Aisha was particularly enchanted, running around and pointing out all the different colors. The food was delicious, a mix of local and international flavors that satisfied all our palates.

With our bellies full, we set off to explore the Andador Turistico Miguel Hidalgo. This pedestrian walkway is the heart of San Cristobal, a vibrant vein pumping with culture and history. The air was alive with the sounds of bustling market vendors and the aroma of traditional Chiapan cuisine. It reminded me of the markets back home in Nigeria, full of life and energy.

We strolled along, stopping at various artisan shops. I was particularly drawn to the handwoven textiles, each piece telling a story of the local indigenous communities. I picked up a beautiful scarf for my mother, a vibrant piece that I know she’ll adore. Aisha, of course, was more interested in the colorful toys, and Umar indulged her with a small, hand-carved wooden doll.
Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from simply being present, open to the unexpected joys that each new place has to offer.
Continuing our exploration, we made our way to the Arco del Carmen. This historical landmark, built in 1680, is a stunning example of Mudéjar architecture. It once served as one of the main entrances to the city and is notable for its three-level design. Aisha was fascinated by the arch, asking endless questions about its history and purpose. I tried my best to explain, piecing together information from the various historical markers.

After soaking in the history of Arco del Carmen, we decided to indulge in some lunch. Te Quiero Verde caught our eye, a vegan restaurant with a reputation for fresh, organic food. As many of you know, I'm always eager to try new cuisines, and this place seemed like a perfect fit. We ordered a variety of dishes, from tacos to burgers, all made with plant-based ingredients. Even Umar, a self-proclaimed meat-lover, was impressed by the flavors and textures.

One of the highlights was definitely the taco al pastor. It was incredible how they managed to recreate the traditional flavors using only vegan ingredients. Aisha loved the burgers, devouring them with gusto. It’s always a win when you find a place that caters to both adults and children.
With our energy levels replenished, we ventured into Na Casa Galería. This shop was a treasure trove of local crafts and artwork. From vibrant paintings to intricate pottery, every piece was a testament to the creativity and skill of the local artisans. I was particularly impressed by the intricate beadwork, reminiscent of the traditional crafts I grew up with in Nigeria. It’s amazing how art can transcend cultures and connect us all.

As the afternoon wore on, the promise of Thai food for dinner started to tickle our taste buds. For dinner, we ventured to Bangcook Tailandés. I had heard great things about their authentic Thai cuisine, and I was eager to try it out. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm ambiance that made us feel right at home.

We started with the spring rolls, crispy and flavorful, followed by the Pad Thai and green curry. Each dish was a burst of exotic flavors, a perfect blend of sweet, spicy, and savory. Aisha, who is usually a picky eater, surprised us by devouring the Pad Thai. Umar and I savored every bite of the green curry, reminiscing about our travels in Southeast Asia.
After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll back to our hotel, OYO Hotel La Luna, enjoying the cool evening air. The streets were quieter now, the bustling energy of the day replaced by a sense of calm and tranquility. As we walked, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this incredible experience, for the opportunity to explore a new culture with my family.

Reflecting on the day, it strikes me how much San Cristobal de las Casas reminds me of the vibrant markets and artistic communities back in Nigeria. There's a similar spirit of resilience, creativity, and warmth that permeates the air. It's a reminder that no matter where we go, we can always find common ground and connections through culture, art, and food.
Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the local culture with a visit to the Museo de Culturas Populares de Chiapas and Iglesia de San Cristóbalito. I am particularly excited about the museum, as I am keen to learn more about the region's rich heritage and traditions. And perhaps, if we are lucky, we will find another hidden gem, another unexpected adventure waiting to unfold.
As I sit here writing, with the sounds of San Cristobal de las Casas gently lulling me to sleep, I can’t help but feel a sense of contentment. Today was a reminder that sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones where you simply let go, wander, and allow yourself to be surprised. And with my family by my side, every moment becomes a cherished memory.
The only downside to today was realizing I forgot my travel guidebook! I really wanted to read up on the history of Arco del Carmen, but I guess I'll have to rely on the internet for now.
