Discover the natural wonders of El Arcotete and Rancho Nuevo, where adventure and tranquility blend seamlessly in Chiapas, Mexico.
A Day of Caves, Arches, and Chiapan Skies
Today was all about embracing the natural beauty surrounding San Cristobal de las Casas. We ventured out, eager to explore the renowned El Arcotete and Parque Ecoturístico Rancho Nuevo. I was excited to trade the familiar cityscapes for the promise of caves, forests, and fresh air. It’s days like these that remind me why we travel – to discover the hidden gems that offer a different perspective on the world.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Sabor a mi. Aisha was particularly excited, chattering about the adventures that awaited us. Umar, ever the practical one, made sure we had enough water and snacks for the day. I ordered some enchiladas, while Aisha opted for a pastry. Umar, predictably, chose the tamales. Fuelled up, we were ready to start our adventure.
First on our itinerary was El Arcotete, a natural arch formed over millennia by the Fogótico River. The drive there was scenic, with glimpses of local life as we passed through small communities. The weather was kind, with a gentle breeze and the promise of a warm day ahead. Upon arrival, the site was even more impressive than the pictures suggested. The massive stone archway stood proudly, framed by lush greenery.
We decided to take a guided tour, keen to learn more about the history and geology of the area. Our guide, a local man with a warm smile, shared stories of the arch being a sacred place for the indigenous people. Aisha was fascinated, peppering him with questions about the stalactites and stalagmites inside the caves. I was captivated by the sheer scale of the natural formation, a testament to the power of time and nature.
We opted for a boat ride through the cave, which offered a unique perspective of the rock formations. The cool air inside was a welcome respite from the sun. As we glided through the water, our guide pointed out different rock formations, each with its own unique shape and story. Aisha gasped as we passed under low-hanging stalactites, narrowly avoiding a collision. It was an exhilarating experience, one that brought us closer to nature's artistry.

After El Arcotete, we headed to Parque Ecoturístico Rancho Nuevo, known for its extensive cave system. This park offered a different kind of adventure, with opportunities for horseback riding and hiking. Aisha, of course, was thrilled at the prospect of seeing the caves. The park was bustling with families and tourists, all eager to explore the natural wonders.

The Grutas de Rancho Nuevo stretch over 10 kilometers, with a depth of up to 550 meters, so there was plenty to explore. We followed a well-lit path that allowed us to appreciate the incredible formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The caves were cool and damp, with an otherworldly atmosphere. Aisha was in her element, pointing out shapes that resembled animals and mythical creatures.
Umar and I were equally impressed, marveling at the intricate details of the cave formations. It was hard to believe that these natural sculptures had been formed over thousands of years. We learned about the discovery of the caves in 1947 and the efforts to preserve them for future generations. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the importance of protecting our natural heritage.
After our cave exploration, we took a leisurely stroll through the surrounding pine forest. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of pine needles. Aisha ran ahead, collecting pine cones and leaves. Umar and I walked hand in hand, enjoying the peace and quiet of the forest. It was a perfect moment of connection, a reminder of the simple joys of family and nature.
For lunch, we stopped at TierrAdentro Restaurante. The restaurant was charming, with a cozy atmosphere. I enjoyed a traditional Chiapan dish, while Umar opted for something vegetarian. Aisha, predictably, chose the quesadillas. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and friendly.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Restaurante La Lupe. The restaurant had a lively ambiance, with music and laughter filling the air. We ordered a variety of dishes, from tacos to enchiladas, all bursting with flavor. Aisha declared it the best Mexican food she had ever tasted. It was a fitting end to a day filled with adventure and discovery.

Before heading back to our hotel, we made a spontaneous stop at Clover Irish Pub. I know, it sounds a bit out of place in San Cristobal, but we were curious. The pub was surprisingly lively, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the music and drinks. Umar ordered a beer, while I opted for a cocktail. Aisha, of course, stuck to her usual soda. It was a fun, unexpected way to end the day, a reminder that travel is all about embracing the unexpected.

As we sipped our drinks, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's adventures. We had explored caves, hiked through forests, and enjoyed delicious food. But more than that, we had connected with nature and each other. These are the moments that make travel so rewarding, the memories that we will cherish for years to come.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Catedral de San Cristóbal de las Casas and Zócalo de San Cristobal de las Casas. Aisha is excited to see the colorful architecture, and I’m looking forward to soaking in the local atmosphere. We’ll also try Chef Claudia Sántiz for breakfast, Restaurante TULUC for lunch, and La Viña de Bacco for dinner. And, of course, we’ll make sure to stop by Boutique Arte Sandía for some souvenir shopping. It promises to be another day of cultural immersion and family fun.
As I write this, tucked away in our hotel room, I can hear the sounds of San Cristobal drifting through the window. It’s a comforting reminder that we are far from home, yet surrounded by warmth and hospitality. I’m grateful for these moments, for the opportunity to share them with my family, and for the chance to inspire others to explore the world.
