Echoes of Emperors: Our First Day in Tarragona

After a smooth flight from Brno to Barcelona and a scenic drive to Tarragona, our family adventure officially began! The anticipation had been building for months, and it felt surreal to finally be here, ready to immerse ourselves in the rich history and vibrant culture of this Spanish gem. Jana, Maximilian, and I were eager to explore, and Tarragona, with its blend of ancient Roman ruins and modern Mediterranean charm, seemed like the perfect place to start. We checked into the AC Hotel Tarragona by Marriott, a modern haven that promised comfort and convenience for our week-long stay. It was time to dive into the past!

Our first stop was the Amfiteatre de Tarragona, and what a sight it was! The amphitheater stands proudly, overlooking the azure Mediterranean Sea, a testament to the city's Roman past. As we walked through the ancient arena, I could almost hear the roar of the crowds and the clash of gladiators. Maximilian was captivated, peppering me with questions about who fought here and what the battles were like. It was a fantastic way to bring history to life for him. The informative plaques scattered around the site helped us understand the significance of this well-preserved monument. The view overlooking the Mediterranean was simply otherworldly, offering a remarkable glimpse into its ancient glory.

The stones whisper stories of emperors and gladiators, a tangible link to a civilization that shaped our world.

Next, we ventured to the Muralla Romana, the Roman Walls that once protected this important city. These ancient fortifications are incredibly well-preserved, and walking along them gave us a sense of the scale and power of the Roman Empire. Maximilian was particularly fascinated by the cannons and other architectural elements along the walk. Jana, with her librarian's curiosity, was engrossed in reading the historical markers, sharing interesting facts about the walls' construction and their role in Tarragona's defense. It was a beautiful walk offering views of the city and the sea.

By lunchtime, we were all ravenous. Following a recommendation, we headed to La Cuineta for a taste of authentic Mediterranean cuisine. This charming restaurant, nestled in the heart of Tarragona, exuded a cozy and rustic ambiance. The antique decorations and warm atmosphere made us feel right at home. We opted for the daily menu, which offered a delightful selection of traditional Spanish dishes with a modern twist. I savored the salmorejo, while Jana relished the salmon. Maximilian, always a fan of pasta, devoured his veal stroganoff. The friendly service and delicious food made it a perfect spot for a family lunch.

With our bellies full, we strolled towards the Catedral de Tarragona, a magnificent structure that dominates the city's skyline. The cathedral, a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, is a true museum of sacred art. Inside, we were awestruck by the intricate details of the alabaster altarpiece and the stunning stained-glass windows. Maximilian was particularly intrigued by the cloister garden, with its serene atmosphere and playful terrapins. Jana appreciated the Arabic influences in the sacristy's paneled ceiling, a testament to the diverse cultures that have shaped Tarragona's history.

Before dinner, we decided to immerse ourselves in local life at the Central Market of Tarragona. This bustling market is a feast for the senses, with vendors selling everything from fresh seafood and local meats to colorful fruits and vegetables. Maximilian was wide-eyed, pointing at the various delicacies and sampling some of the local treats. Jana, ever the practical one, picked up some fresh produce for our hotel fridge, ensuring we had healthy snacks on hand. I was impressed by the market's modernist architecture, a testament to Tarragona's blend of history and modernity. We even ventured downstairs to the Mercadona supermarket.

As evening approached, we made our way to Arcs Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant, housed in an antique building with medieval Gothic arches, promised a traditional cuisine with a modern twist. The ambiance was enchanting, and the menu featured a delectable selection of Mediterranean, Spanish, and European dishes. I opted for the grilled seasonal fish, while Jana chose the pasta stuffed with truffles and mushrooms. Maximilian, with his adventurous palate, tried the roasted eggplant with sweet peppers and cream. The meal was a culinary delight, a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Reflecting on our first day, I realized how seamlessly Tarragona blends its rich Roman past with its vibrant modern culture. From the awe-inspiring amphitheater to the bustling central market, every corner of this city tells a story. It's a place where history comes alive, where families can create lasting memories, and where every meal is a celebration of local flavors. As we head back to the hotel, Maximilian is already asking about tomorrow. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Ferreres Aqueduct, the Passeig Arqueològic, and the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona. I am also hoping to check out Korxo bar [second day itinerary]. I realize I forgot my portable charger and travel adapter, so I hope I can get one at the Central Market tomorrow [TripEssentialsForgotten]. I am looking forward to another day of exploration and adventure in this captivating Spanish city. I am very happy that we decided to come to Tarragona for our family holiday. I think it will be an unforgettable experience for all of us.
