Day 7: A Florentine Farewell: Art, Markets, and Medici Memories
Concluding our family's Florentine adventure with art, history, and the vibrant Mercato del Porcellino. A perfect end to a memorable trip.
A Final Flourish in Florence
As our week-long family adventure in Florence draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. Today was all about soaking in the last bits of Florentine culture, history, and charm before we bid arrivederci to this magnificent city. It's amazing how a place can weave its way into your heart in just a few days.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Rivoire, a historic café in Piazza della Signoria. The rich aroma of Italian coffee filled the air as we settled into our seats, watching Florence slowly awaken. Jana and Maximilian opted for the classic cornetto and cappuccino, while I indulged in a strong espresso and a pastry. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. It reminded me a lot of the cafes back home in Brno, where the simple act of enjoying coffee becomes a cherished ritual.
First on our itinerary was the San Marco Museum. Housed in a 15th-century monastery, the museum is home to an impressive collection of frescoes by Fra Angelico. As a software engineer, I appreciate the precision and detail in his work, but it was the spiritual atmosphere of the monastery that truly captivated me. Wandering through the quiet cloisters and monks' cells, it felt like stepping back in time. Maximilian was fascinated by the stories of Girolamo Savonarola, the fiery friar who once lived within these walls. The museum itself is an architectural marvel, a testament to Brunelleschi's genius. It’s a quieter, more intimate experience compared to the Uffizi, allowing for a deeper connection with the art and history. I felt a sense of peace and contemplation that I hadn't experienced in the busier parts of the city.

Florence is a city that rewards the curious traveler, offering layers of history, art, and culture at every turn.
Next, we ventured to the Cappelle Medicee, the Medici Chapels. This opulent complex is a testament to the power and wealth of the Medici family. The Chapel of the Princes, with its soaring dome and intricate marblework, was particularly awe-inspiring. Maximilian was fascinated by the coats of arms of the Tuscan cities under Medici control, while Jana admired the craftsmanship of the semi-precious stones that adorned the walls. I found myself pondering the lives of the Medici dukes and their impact on Florence's history. It's a stark contrast to the simple life of the monks at San Marco, but both offer valuable insights into Florence's rich past. The New Sacristy, designed by Michelangelo, was another highlight. The sculptures of Giuliano and Lorenzo de Medici, along with the allegorical figures of Day, Night, Dawn, and Dusk, are powerful expressions of human emotion. It was incredible to witness Michelangelo's genius firsthand, even if the setting was a bit somber.

For lunch, we sought refuge from the chilly January air at Osteria dell'Enoteca. This cozy restaurant, tucked away near the Boboli Gardens, is known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine and extensive wine list. We started with the Caponata di Zucca Mantovana, a delightful dish featuring Mantua pumpkin and aged pecorino cheese. For the main course, Jana and I shared the Bistecca dell'Osteria, a Florentine steak grilled over an open flame. It was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, and seasoned simply with salt and rosemary. Maximilian opted for the Pici Artigianali al Sugo d'Aglione, a hearty pasta dish with a rich tomato sauce. The meal was a true celebration of Tuscan flavors, and the warm, inviting atmosphere made it all the more enjoyable. I appreciated that it was a bit off the beaten path, allowing us to escape the tourist crowds and immerse ourselves in the local culture.

In the afternoon, we strolled through the Mercato del Porcellino, a bustling market known for its leather goods and souvenirs. Maximilian was eager to rub the snout of the famous bronze boar statue, a tradition said to ensure a return trip to Florence. Jana haggled with the vendors for a leather handbag, while I browsed the selection of Florentine artwork. The market was a sensory overload, with the sights, sounds, and smells of Florence all around us. I even found a small leather journal to document our travels, a tangible reminder of our time here. It was a fun, lively experience, a perfect contrast to the quiet contemplation of the morning's museum visits. I made sure to rub the Porcellino's snout, hoping that our family will return to Florence someday.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Mad - Souls & Spirits, a quirky cocktail bar in the Oltrarno district. This was Jana's choice, as she had read about their creative cocktails and laid-back atmosphere. The bar was dimly lit and decorated with eclectic artwork, creating a cool, unpretentious vibe. Neri and Julian, the owners, were indeed as foul-mouthed and noisy as the reviews suggested, but they were also incredibly friendly and welcoming. We sampled a few of their signature cocktails, each one a unique and flavorful concoction. Maximilian enjoyed a non-alcoholic beverage, feeling very grown-up in the dimly lit bar. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing, a final toast to our Florentine adventure. It reminded me of the pubs in Brno, where the atmosphere is just as important as the drinks.

For our final dinner in Florence, we chose Il Santo Bevitore, a restaurant recommended by several locals. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with dark wood furniture and candlelight creating a cozy ambiance. The menu featured refined takes on rustic Italian dishes, with a focus on seasonal ingredients. We started with a pear and pecorino salad, a refreshing combination of sweet and savory flavors. For the main course, I opted for the roasted duck leg, served with foie gras mousse and sweet-sour radicchio. Jana chose the porcini risotto, while Maximilian devoured a plate of handmade pasta with a simple tomato sauce. The meal was a fitting end to our culinary journey through Florence, a reminder of the delicious food and wine we've enjoyed throughout the week. I savored a glass of vin santo, the classic Tuscan dessert wine, as a final indulgence.
