Explore Ioannina's hidden gems: Perama Cave, Litharitsia Park, vintage finds, and exquisite local cuisine, creating unforgettable memories.
A Day of Discovery in Ioannina
Today was a day of contrasts, exploring the depths of the earth and the heights of history, all while savoring the local flavors of Ioannina. From the cool, mysterious caverns of Perama Cave to the sun-drenched paths of Litharitsia Park, and the charming discoveries in a local vintage shop, Ioannina continued to surprise and delight me. And of course, no day is complete without experiencing the culinary heart of this vibrant city.
Discover the enchanting beauty of Perama Cave, a stunning natural wonder filled with fascinating stalactites and stalagmites, rich in history and adventure.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Thamon. This 'new age Greek Bistro' is known for using local produce and I was excited to try it. I enjoyed a traditional Greek coffee and a delicious pastry filled with local cheese. It was the perfect way to start the day, fueling me up for the adventures ahead. From what I could gather, Thamon seems to be quite a popular spot, even the Ioannina Food Council appreciates it.

After breakfast, I made my way to Perama Cave, located just a few kilometers outside of Ioannina. The journey there was scenic, offering glimpses of Lake Pamvotis and the surrounding mountains. Upon arriving, I was immediately struck by the unassuming entrance to what lies beneath.
The Perama Cave is truly a natural wonder. Discovered in 1940, it served as a refuge for locals during the Italian bombardments of World War II. Today, it welcomes visitors from all over the world, eager to explore its stunning formations. As I descended into the cave with a guided tour, I was immediately enveloped in a cool, damp atmosphere – a welcome respite from the warm June sun. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and a humidity of 100%.
The interior of the cave is breathtaking. Stalactites and stalagmites adorn every surface, creating a surreal, otherworldly landscape. Our guide, Marianna, pointed out various formations, explaining how they were created over millions of years by the slow dripping of water. The cave boasts around 19 different types of stalactites and stalagmites.
To walk through Perama Cave is to journey through time, witnessing the artistry of nature sculpted over millennia.
One of the most impressive stalagmites is known as 'The Cross'. I was also fascinated by the small lakes within the cave, one of which is called the Lake with the Lilypads. The whole experience felt like stepping into a hidden world. The tour lasted about 45 minutes, covering about 1 km of the cave, and exiting via a staircase. I took the opportunity to capture the cave's beauty without using flash photography, as permitted.
Emerging from the cave, I felt a sense of awe and wonder. It’s incredible to think that such beauty lies hidden beneath the surface of the earth. I took a moment to visit the Anna Petroheilou Exhibition and Visitor Centre, where I watched a documentary entitled 'The World of Caves'. This added another layer of appreciation to the experience, providing context and information about the cave's formation and significance.
Next on my itinerary was Litharitsia Park, located in the heart of Ioannina. After the cool depths of the cave, I was ready for some sunshine and fresh air. The park is built on a hill close to the castle and is known for its busts of important scholars and leaders of the city. It offered a refreshing change of pace.

As I strolled through the park, I admired the lush greenery and the panoramic views of the city. The air was filled with the scent of pine trees, and the sounds of children playing added to the lively atmosphere. I made my way to the Litharitsia Fortress, built by Ali Pasha around 1800. It once served as a protective enclosure before the castle. Today, the fortress houses a dining area, and the hilltop has been transformed into a park.
At the top of Litharitsia Park lies the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina. I decided to immerse myself in the history of the region. The museum showcases artifacts from the Ice Age to the decline of the Roman Empire, providing a comprehensive overview of Epirus’s rich past. The Archaeological Museum is one of Ioannina's most important landmarks.
One hall is dedicated to the religious center of Dodoni, displaying votive offerings and lead tablets with questions to Zeus and Dione. It was fascinating to see these ancient artifacts and learn about the history of the region. The building itself is an example of Greek Modernism. From the garden, I enjoyed views of the lake and the Pindos Mountain range.
After a morning of exploring, my stomach started to rumble. It was time for lunch at Fysa Roufa, a traditional Greek restaurant known for its vegan options. I was intrigued to see what vegan interpretations they offered of classic Greek dishes. I opted for stuffed tomatoes and peppers, a delightful and flavorful meal that left me feeling satisfied. They also have a vegan section on the menu with burgers and nuggets.

With renewed energy, I decided to explore the local shops. I stumbled upon a Vintage Boutique and couldn’t resist stepping inside. As someone who enjoys vintage finds, I was curious to see what treasures I might discover. The shop was filled with clothing and accessories from decades past, each item with its own unique story to tell.

I spent a happy hour browsing the racks, trying on different pieces and imagining the lives they once lived. While I didn’t find anything to purchase, the experience was delightful, and I left with a sense of nostalgia and appreciation for timeless style.
As evening approached, it was time for dinner. I chose SEIRIOS KOUZINA, an all-day restaurant known for its modern Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant is located in a lively area near the lake, perfect for people-watching. I opted for a table in their garden.

I started with a salad, followed by a main course of grilled fish. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, showcasing the best of local ingredients. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.
Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the diversity of experiences Ioannina offers. From the depths of Perama Cave to the heights of Litharitsia Park, from the flavors of local cuisine to the charm of vintage finds, this city has something for everyone. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Archaeological Site of Dodoni and the Vikos Gorge View Point. I’m looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery in this beautiful corner of Greece.
