A Solo Cultural Escape to Ioannina
Day 4: Dodoni's Whispers and Vikos Gorge's Majesty: A Day of Ancient Echoes and Breathtaking Vistas
Immerse yourself in the ancient oracle of Dodoni and the stunning views of Vikos Gorge, a day of history and natural beauty in Greece.
Echoes of the Past, Views for the Ages
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of ancient history and stunning natural beauty. Leaving the cozy confines of NAIADES the Residence Ioannina Castle behind, I set out to explore the region's rich heritage and breathtaking landscapes. It was a day that reminded me why I love solo travel – the freedom to immerse myself fully in the experience, to linger where my curiosity leads, and to reflect on the wonders around me.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Accademia Del Panino. Fuelled by a delicious meal and a strong cup of coffee, I felt ready to embrace whatever adventures lay ahead. The cafe had a delightful Mediterranean atmosphere. It was the perfect start to a day dedicated to exploring the ancient and natural wonders of Epirus. I made a mental note to suggest this place to Hans-Peter; he would absolutely love the authentic Italian cuisine.

Whispers of Dodoni
The first stop on my itinerary was the Archaeological Site of Dodoni. As someone fascinated by history, I had eagerly anticipated this visit. Dodoni, the oldest Hellenic oracle, predates even Delphi, with roots stretching back to the second millennium BCE. The air was thick with the weight of centuries as I wandered through the ruins. It's located about 22 km southwest of Ioannina, nestled in a valley beneath Mount Tomaros.

The sanctuary was initially dedicated to a Mother Goddess, later joined by Zeus. The priests and priestesses would interpret the rustling of oak leaves to divine the correct course of action. Imagine, Claire, standing in the same spot where ancient Greeks sought guidance from the gods! I could almost hear the whispers of the past carried on the gentle breeze.
The site itself is a sprawling complex. The well-preserved Hellenistic Theatre immediately caught my eye. It is one of the largest in Greece, though it was converted into an arena in the 1st century BC. I also explored the foundations of the Hiera Oikia, which once stood next to the sacred oak. Though the oak visible today was recently planted, it stands as a reminder of the ancient rituals performed here.
The echoes of ancient voices and the whispers of the sacred oak created an atmosphere that transported me back in time, connecting me to the spiritual heart of ancient Greece.
I spent a long time wandering through the site, reading the information boards, and trying to imagine what life must have been like in this ancient sanctuary. The museum in Ioannina displays many metal artifacts unearthed during excavations. I found myself pondering the questions pilgrims had inscribed on lead sheets, seeking answers to their everyday concerns. It was a humbling experience to connect with people who lived so long ago, yet shared the same hopes and fears as we do today.
Panoramic Heights: Vikos Gorge View Point
Leaving Dodoni, I set off for the Vikos Gorge View Point. The drive itself was stunning, winding through picturesque villages and verdant landscapes. As I climbed higher into the Pindus Mountains, the air grew cooler and the views became more dramatic. I was excited to see the Vikos Gorge, known as one of the deepest canyons in the world.

Reaching the viewpoint, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the gorge. The panoramic vista stretched out before me, a breathtaking tapestry of limestone and dolomite rocks, and lush vegetation. The Vikos Gorge is known as the Grand Canyon of Greece. It is an impressive sight, with the height-to-width ratio being more impressive than the Grand Canyon.
I took my time to soak in the view, breathing in the fresh mountain air and feeling a sense of awe at the power of nature. There are several vantage points in the area. Many people start their hikes from Monodendri or Papingo villages. I imagined hiking through the gorge, a 13-kilometer trail from Monodendri to Papingo. Perhaps on another trip, when Hans-Peter is with me, we can embark on that adventure together.
A Culinary Evening in Ioannina
After a day of exploring, I was ready for a delicious meal. I headed to Spitaki με θέα for lunch. The restaurant certainly lived up to its name, offering stunning views alongside its tasty dishes. I enjoyed a leisurely meal, savoring the local flavors and reflecting on the day's adventures. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed. It was a perfect spot to unwind and recharge.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Beatnik, a bar known for its cozy atmosphere and great music. It was the perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring. The bar had a unique vibe, and the staff was accommodating. I enjoyed a drink while listening to the music, soaking in the local ambiance. It was a great way to end a memorable day.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into the history of Ioannina, visiting Ali Pasha's Tomb and the Fethiye Mosque. I might also do some shopping at Petrichor concept store. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, the echoes of Dodoni's whispers, and the majesty of Vikos Gorge.
Ioannina continues to surprise and delight me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. This solo journey is proving to be exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with myself, explore new horizons, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Until tomorrow!
