Beneath the Surface and Beside the Lake

Today was a day of venturing into the depths of the earth and then basking in the beauty of a shimmering lake. It’s amazing how much a single day can offer when you open yourself up to the wonders around you. From exploring ancient caves to savoring local delicacies, Ioannina continues to surprise and delight.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at MATILDE pasta bar. It’s a cozy little place, and I decided to indulge in some of their delicious pasta to fuel up for the day’s adventures. I must admit, starting the day with pasta might not be the most traditional choice, but it certainly set a cheerful tone.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to Perama Cave. Just a short drive from Ioannina, the cave is nestled in the Goritsa hill. Discovered accidentally in 1940 by locals seeking shelter during World War II, it has since become one of Greece's most impressive caves. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the cool, damp air – a welcome respite from the warm June day.

The guided tour took us through a labyrinth of passageways, each turn revealing stunning stalactites and stalagmites. Our guide shared fascinating facts about the cave's geology and the unique fauna that call it home. Formed over 1.5 million years ago by an underground river, the cave is part of an ancient riverbed. The tourist route extends for 1,100 meters, covering an area of 14,800 square meters. The temperature inside remains a constant 18 degrees Celsius, and the humidity hovers near 100%. It felt like stepping into another world, a hidden realm sculpted by time and nature.

The earth has music for those who listen.

It’s incredible to think that these caves once served as a refuge for locals during the war. Today, they offer a different kind of solace – a chance to marvel at the earth’s artistry and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. I learned that the cave is also known for its therapeutic properties, with the stable temperature, high humidity, and absence of dust creating a unique environment beneficial for certain health conditions.

Emerging from the depths of Perama Cave, I was ready for the next adventure: Lake Pamvotida. Just a stone’s throw from the cave, the lake shimmered under the midday sun. Known in ancient times as “Pamvotis” (the great provider), this lake is a true gem of the Ioannina Basin region.

I decided to take a leisurely stroll along the lakeside, enjoying the views of the small island in the center. The island, accessible by boat, is the only inhabited lake island in Greece without a name. I watched as small boats ferried locals and tourists alike to and from the island, promising a glimpse into a unique community.

The lake offers perfect conditions for various water activities, including water skiing, rowing, and canoeing. Although I didn’t partake in any of these today, I enjoyed watching others glide across the water, their laughter echoing across the lake. The breeze was gentle, carrying the scent of the surrounding vegetation – willows, poplar trees, and plane trees that provide shelter for a variety of birds.

For lunch, I ventured to Páprika, a local restaurant known for its authentic Greek cuisine. I opted for a selection of traditional mezedes, small plates perfect for sharing. Each dish was bursting with flavor, showcasing the region's culinary heritage. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploration, surrounded by the lively atmosphere of locals enjoying their midday meal.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping. Woman Sense Boutique caught my eye with its display of chic women's clothing. I spent a pleasant hour browsing through the racks, admiring the stylish designs and personalized service. Although I didn’t find anything to purchase today, it was a delightful experience nonetheless.

As evening approached, I made my way to Kamara Tsipouradiko for dinner. This traditional tsipouro tavern promised an authentic taste of Ioannina’s nightlife. Tsipouro, a local spirit similar to grappa, is often served with a variety of mezedes. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists alike gathered to enjoy good food, good company, and the sounds of traditional Greek music. The staff were incredibly hospitable, making me feel right at home.

I savored each bite of the delicious mezedes, from grilled meats to flavorful dips, all perfectly complementing the strong, aromatic tsipouro. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, immersing myself in the local culture and savoring the flavors of Ioannina.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Ioannina has to offer. From the depths of Perama Cave to the shores of Lake Pamvotida, every corner of this city holds a unique charm. And the local cuisine? Simply divine !

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Ic Kale Acropolis of Ioannina and the Municipal Art Gallery of Ioannina. I also intend to sample the delights at FooFoo Streetfood Trailer for breakfast and Spuntino Alta Gastronomia Italiana for lunch, and conclude the day with dinner at Eréctus. Perhaps I'll even find time for a drink at Chevalier. It promises to be another day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.

As I sit here writing, I am filled with a sense of contentment and gratitude. Ioannina has a way of capturing your heart, inviting you to slow down, explore, and savor every moment. I am so glad I decided to embark on this solo adventure, allowing myself to fully immerse in the beauty and culture of this enchanting city. And I am especially glad that Hans-Peter is enjoying his time in Berlin, tending to our garden. I am sure he will be eager to hear about my adventures when I return.

Until tomorrow,
Claire
