A Solo Cultural Escape to Ioannina
Day 5: Whispers of the Past: Exploring Ioannina's Ottoman Echoes
Delving into Ioannina's Ottoman heritage: Discovering Ali Pasha's Tomb, the Fethiye Mosque, and local artisan treasures. A cultural journey.
Echoes of Empires Past
Today, I found myself transported back in time, wandering through the historical heart of Ioannina. It's remarkable how much history is layered within this city, each era leaving its indelible mark. My exploration today focused on the Ottoman period, a significant chapter in Ioannina's story, and one that continues to resonate through its architecture and cultural landmarks.
The morning began with a delightful breakfast at Du Sel Restaurant [i]. The hotel was kind enough to offer a wonderful spread, and I enjoyed the pastries and coffee while planning my day. I must remember to get Hans-Peter to come back with me; he would love the spa facilities here.
Fuelled and ready, I set out to explore the inner castle, or Its Kale, where the Fethiye Mosque and Ali Pasha's Tomb awaited. As I walked, I couldn't help but reflect on the many layers of history beneath my feet – from Byzantine foundations to Ottoman grandeur. It's fascinating how each civilization builds upon the last, creating a rich tapestry of stories.

Ali Pasha's Final Resting Place
My first stop was Ali Pasha's Tomb. The tomb is a simple yet poignant monument, a reminder of a man who left an undeniable mark on Ioannina. Ali Pasha, the 'Lion of Ioannina', ruled this region with a complex mix of ambition and ruthlessness in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The monument includes two graves: one belonging to Ali Pasha and another to one of his wives. After his assassination in 1822, only his body was buried here, his head sent to Istanbul. Standing there, I thought about the turbulent life of Ali Pasha, his rise to power, and his ultimate downfall. It’s a story of ambition, betrayal, and the relentless pursuit of power. The wrought iron railing surrounding the tomb is a replica of the original, preserved until 1940. The surrounding area offers a tranquil view of Lake Pamvotis, a serene backdrop to a dramatic history.

History is not just a collection of dates and facts; it's a living narrative that shapes who we are.
Fethiye Mosque: A Testament to Time
Just a short walk from the tomb stands the Fethiye Mosque. The mosque's name, meaning 'Mosque of the Conquest', hints at its origins following the Ottoman capture of Ioannina in 1430. Originally a wooden structure, it was later replaced with stone in 1611 and extensively remodeled by Ali Pasha in 1795. He made it the main mosque of his palace.
The Fethiye Mosque is not only a place of worship but also a museum, showcasing exhibits detailing the Ottoman era. Inside, I admired the intricate frescoes and calligraphy, a blend of Ottoman artistry and local Greek influences. The prayer hall, adorned with vibrant patterns, creates a harmonious fusion of colors. The mihrab, decorated with stuccowork and writings, is particularly striking.
According to tradition, the mosque was built on the site of a Byzantine church, Taxiarchis Michael. Two marble piers from the church, dating back to the 13th century, are incorporated into the mihrab. The mosque consists of a central domed hall, an external open-air gallery, and a minaret in the northwest corner.
Murals depicting flowers, fruits, geometric patterns, and Arabic inscriptions adorn the dome and walls. A second phase of dome decoration includes columns and large hoops, reflecting the neoclassical spirit prevalent in Ioannina during the 19th century. After the liberation of Ioannina, the mosque served as a hospital and a military building before becoming a museum in 1970.
I spent a good amount of time simply soaking in the atmosphere, imagining the prayers and gatherings that once filled this space. It’s a place where the echoes of the past still resonate, inviting reflection on Ioannina's diverse cultural heritage.
A Culinary Journey Through Ioannina
For lunch, I ventured to Metsovitiki Folia, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Greek barbecue. The restaurant is a family business that has been operating since 2007. I decided to try the kontosouvli, a spit-roasted meat dish that's a local favorite. It was absolutely delicious, and the portions were generous. I also sampled the galotyri, a local cheese, and politiki salad. To finish, I had a spoonful of sour cherry sweet.

As I savored my meal, I couldn't help but notice the lively atmosphere of the restaurant. Families and friends gathered, sharing stories and laughter. It was a reminder of the importance of food in bringing people together, a universal language that transcends cultures and backgrounds.
Discovering Local Treasures
In the afternoon, I decided to explore the local shops. I stumbled upon Petrichor concept store, a charming boutique in the city center. The store offers a curated collection of clothing, jewelry, accessories, and everyday items from Greek and foreign designers.

I was particularly drawn to the handmade jewelry. I ended up purchasing a delicate silver necklace with a small blue stone, a memento of my time in Ioannina. The shop assistant told me that Petrichor was created in December 2016 and has a modern and functional design. The store has been featured in fashion magazines and was invited to showcase wooden toys at Etsy's Holiday Pop Up event in New York City in 2024.
As I walked back to NAIADES the Residence Ioannina Castle, I reflected on the day's experiences. I had journeyed through time, explored historical landmarks, savored local flavors, and discovered hidden gems. Ioannina had revealed its many layers, each one adding to the city's unique charm.

Tomorrow's Adventure Awaits
Tomorrow, I plan to venture further afield, visiting the Holy Monastery of Saint Paraskevi and Vikos National Park [If I’m feeling adventurous enough!]. I’ve heard the Monastery is a place of serenity and spiritual significance, and I am very much looking forward to seeing it. I think I will also stop by Blue Gin for a drink in the evening. I’m sure it will be another day filled with discovery and wonder.
As I settle in for the night, I feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this enchanting city. Ioannina has captured my heart with its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. It’s a place that I will cherish for years to come, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I am so glad I decided to come to Ioannina, and I think Hans-Peter would adore it here. I’m sure Emily would love the shops, too! It’s lovely to travel solo, but I do miss them.
