Stepping Back in Time in Urbino

Today was a day of wandering through Urbino's less-trodden paths, seeking out the stories whispered in its ancient stones. Hans-Peter and I love uncovering the hidden corners of a city, and Urbino certainly didn't disappoint. It's amazing how much history you can absorb just by taking a different turn, venturing away from the main tourist routes.

Our morning began, as it often does, with a delightful breakfast at Piccolo BAR da IDO e ADO. It's quickly becoming our favorite spot for a quick bite and strong coffee to start the day. The owners are so friendly and welcoming, it feels like we're locals. I had a delicious pastry and Hans-Peter enjoyed a panino. Fueled up, we set off to explore.

Our first stop was the Scalinata del pozzo della polenta. Now, this isn't just any staircase; it's a journey through time. As we climbed, I imagined the countless feet that had trod these steps before us, each with their own stories and purpose. The worn stones seemed to hum with the echoes of the past. The staircase is one of the most well-known in the Marche region. Traditional brick houses line the steps, with picturesque alleys branching off, and breathing in the medieval soul of the town. I paused halfway up, catching my breath and admiring the view. Hans-Peter, ever the architect, was fascinated by the construction and the way the buildings seemed to grow organically from the hillside.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners, away from the bustling crowds.

The story of the well is quite amusing. Legend has it that a man was walking up the stairs with a sack of flour when he stopped to rest. The flour fell into the well, and when he went down to retrieve it, he never came back up! The locals joked that he was making polenta in the well.

Next on our itinerary was the Museo Lapidario. Tucked away in the Palazzo Ducale, this museum is a treasure trove of ancient inscriptions, marble plaques, and funerary stones. I was particularly moved by the inscriptions, each a tiny window into the lives and beliefs of people who lived centuries ago. Hans-Peter was in his element, examining the stonework and deciphering the Latin phrases. The museum houses a rich collection of epigraphic material divided into two main sections: the first is dedicated to finds from Rome including urns, inscribed slabs, and brick stamps; the second collects statuary material. We spent a good couple of hours here, lost in the stories etched in stone.

After immersing ourselves in history, we decided it was time for some retail therapy. We ventured into Rosita's, a charming little shop I had spotted earlier in the day. It was filled with lovely clothes and accessories. I found a beautiful scarf that I couldn't resist. I love finding unique pieces when I travel, little mementos that remind me of my adventures. Rosita's is a delightful clothing store and a must-visit for fashion enthusiasts.

For lunch, we chose Ristorante Il Girarrosto - Urbino. We were ready for some traditional Marchigiano cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the aroma of roasting meats filled the air. I opted for a pasta dish with local truffles, while Hans-Peter had the roasted rabbit. Both were absolutely delicious. The prices are moderate, averaging about 25-30 euros per person.

As the afternoon waned, we strolled back towards our hotel, taking a slightly different route to soak in more of Urbino's charm. We passed artisan workshops, tiny piazzas, and hidden gardens. This city has a way of revealing its beauty slowly, layer by layer. There were celebrations for the 100 years since the birth of Italo Mancini.

Dinner tonight was at Ristorante San Giovanni Urbino. This restaurant is in an old 16th-century building in the historic center of Urbino. It was once a patrician house, then the seat of the mint of the Duchy of Urbino, and finally it became the property of the Counts Albani family. The menu featured regional specialties, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. I had homemade passatelli with porcini mushrooms. Hans-Peter enjoyed the roast guinea fowl. The portions were generous, and the service was friendly.

As we walked back to Hotel Raffaello, I reflected on the day. Urbino had surprised me with its hidden depths and quiet beauty. It's a city that rewards those who take the time to wander and explore, to step off the beaten path and discover its secrets. I am so happy that Hans-Peter and I took this trip.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Punto Panoramico di Urbino for a breathtaking view of the city and the surrounding countryside. We'll also explore the Presepe di Urbino, a nativity scene that I've heard is quite remarkable. And perhaps, we'll find another hidden gem or two along the way. We will have breakfast at Bar Il Caffe' Degli Amici, lunch at La Terrazza del Duca Urbino, and dinner at Ristorante Nenè. Before bed, we'll stop at The Bosom Pub for a drink.
