Cultural Immersion in Kanazawa: A Solo Journey
Day 8: Stepping Back in Time: Kanazawa's Historical Echoes
Delving into Kanazawa's past: castles, samurai residences, and merchant traditions unveil the city's captivating historical tapestry.
A Day of Historical Immersion
Today, I embarked on a journey through time, exploring the historical heart of Kanazawa. From majestic castles to preserved samurai residences and merchant houses, the city unveiled its rich past, offering glimpses into the lives of those who shaped its identity. It was a day of discovery, connecting with the stories etched into the very fabric of this captivating city.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kanazawa Temakizushi Coil. I thoroughly enjoyed the creative temaki sushi, a delightful start before diving into the day's historical explorations. Fuelled and ready, my first stop was the magnificent Kanazawa Castle. The castle grounds are vast, and even though the main keep is a reconstruction, the imposing gates and turrets transported me back to the era of samurai and shoguns. I spent a considerable amount of time wandering through the various sections, imagining the bustling life within its walls centuries ago. It's fascinating how the architecture reflects both defensive strength and aesthetic beauty, a testament to the sophisticated craftsmanship of the time.

I learned that Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Garden sometimes have nighttime illuminations. I was here a bit too early in the season to see the fireflies, but I did enjoy the early summer flowers.
The past is never dead. It's not even past.
After immersing myself in the grandeur of Kanazawa Castle, I ventured towards the Kanazawa Shinise Memorial Hall. 'Shinise' refers to long-established shops, and this museum offered a fascinating peek into the lives of Kanazawa's merchants during the Edo period. The building itself was once a pharmacy, owned by the Nakaya family since 1579. It was donated to the city in 1987 to preserve and display the traditional lifestyle and culture of Kanazawa’s citizens. Inside, I explored the meticulously preserved shop space, living quarters, and even a tea room. It was intriguing to see the tools and medicines used by the Nakaya family and to learn about their role in the community. The museum also showcased local handicrafts, providing a comprehensive view of Kanazawa's cultural heritage.

I found the two floors of the building to be very interesting. The first floor had the Mise-no-mae Storefront exhibit, which had tools and medicines used by the Nakaya family. The second floor had Noh theatre masks and a candy tree made of sugar.
Leaving the Shinise Memorial Hall, I made my way to The Old Site of Mr. Kurando Terashima's House. This well-preserved residence offered a glimpse into the life of a mid-level samurai in Kanazawa. Kurando Terashima was not only a samurai but also a skilled artist and a man of strong principles. The house, with its tranquil garden and simple yet elegant design, reflected his refined taste and lifestyle. Wandering through the rooms, I could almost picture Kurando Terashima at work, painting or contemplating the political landscape of his time. The garden, though small, was a peaceful oasis, providing a respite from the outside world. I learned that the pond in the garden was intentionally designed without water, a unique feature that added to its charm.

Before heading back to the hotel, I stopped by The Londonya Bar for a relaxing drink. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a welcoming spot to savor a quiet moment.

For dinner, I had made reservations at Sekitei Kaiseki restaurant. The multi-course meal was a culinary masterpiece, each dish beautifully presented and bursting with flavors. It was a fitting end to a day filled with cultural and historical discoveries.

As I reflect on today's journey, I'm struck by how well Kanazawa has preserved its historical treasures. Walking through the castle, the merchant house, and the samurai residence, I felt a tangible connection to the past. It's as if the city is whispering stories of resilience, creativity, and cultural pride.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Kanazawa's artistic side, starting with the Kotoji Toro (Stone Lantern) and the Gyokusen-en Nishida Family Garden. I'm also looking forward to visiting Kinpakuya Sakuda Head Shop & Workshop, to see the gold leaf craftsmanship that Kanazawa is famous for. I'll be sure to share my experiences with you all soon.
Until then, keep exploring and discovering the beauty around you!
