Echoes of Eternity in The Burren

Today, I found myself transported through time as we explored the ancient sites nestled within the captivating landscape of The Burren. It's remarkable how these stone structures stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history, their stories etched into every weathered surface. With James and Eglė by my side, I felt a profound connection to the past, a sense of continuity that only such places can evoke.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Gregans Castle Hotel in the Burren. The homemade jams were a particular highlight, bursting with the flavors of the Irish countryside. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the historical wonders that awaited us.

First on our itinerary was Corcomroe Abbey. As we approached the abbey, the dramatic silhouette against the sky immediately captured our attention. The abbey, also known as St. Mary of the Fertile Rock, dates back to the early 13th century and was founded for Cistercian monks. The Gothic ruins feature intricate stone carvings, considered among the finest in Cistercian churches in Ireland.

Exploring the abbey, I was struck by the sense of peace that permeated the grounds. Despite the passage of centuries and the ravages of time, the abbey retains an aura of tranquility, inviting contemplation and reflection. Eglė was fascinated by the details in the stone carvings, while James, ever the history enthusiast, delved into the abbey's past, piecing together the stories of the monks who once called this place home. We learned that the abbey's construction began around 1195, founded by Cistercian monks. It was later granted to the Earl of Thomond in 1628 after the dissolution of the monasteries.

The stones whisper stories of faith, resilience, and the enduring power of the human spirit.

Inside the abbey, the architecture was impressive, even in its ruined state. The reduced version of the usual Cistercian scheme included an aisled nave and a rib-vaulted chancel. The carvings at the east end of the church were particularly striking, showcasing human heads and flowers. I found myself imagining the lives of the monks who had walked these halls, their days filled with prayer, work, and contemplation. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the rich tapestry of human history that surrounds us. We discovered that the abbey had a connection to bardic poets, with Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, who died in 1404, buried there.

After immersing ourselves in the serene atmosphere of Corcomroe Abbey, we drove towards Newtown Castle. This 16th-century tower house stands out with its unique cylindrical shape and pyramidical base. The castle was originally built for the O'Brien clan and later passed to the O'Loghlen family. Today, it's part of the Burren College of Art, blending history with contemporary creativity.

As we approached Newtown Castle, its distinctive shape stood out against the rolling green hills. The castle dates back to around 1550 and was skillfully restored in 1994. The O'Brien clan owned the property until 1641, after which the O'Loghlen clan took over. By 1848, the Marquess of Buckingham was the landlord. It was fascinating to learn that during the castle's restoration, archaeologists found evidence of a significant population having lived there, including animal and shellfish remains.

Exploring the grounds, we admired the castle's unique architecture and picturesque setting. The Burren College of Art now occupies the castle, a fitting use for such a historic landmark. Eglė, with her keen interest in art, was particularly intrigued by the college and its integration with the castle's history. James, meanwhile, enjoyed exploring the castle's surroundings, taking in the panoramic views of the Burren landscape. The castle has even become a popular wedding destination, hosting ceremonies in the intimate Minstrels' Gallery.

For lunch, we stopped at The Pier Head Bar & Restaurant. The restaurant is known for its friendly staff and delicious seafood. I enjoyed some mussels and the sea bass fillets. The views of Kinvara Bay added to the experience.

In the late afternoon, we sought out O'Loclainn's Irish Whiskey Bar for a taste of local spirits. This traditional and cozy pub is known for its extensive selection of whiskeys and welcoming atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where conversations flow freely, and you can easily lose track of time. The bar boasts an impressive range of over three hundred bottles.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Parlour Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant offers a casual yet delightful atmosphere with a nod to French bistros. We enjoyed a meal that felt like a trip to Paris.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we reflected on the day's adventures, marveling at the wealth of history and natural beauty that The Burren has to offer. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Aillwee Burren Experience and Flaggy Shore. I'm also hoping to pick up some local jam at the Clare Jam Shop. Each day here brings new discoveries and unforgettable experiences, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds.

Today was a beautiful reminder of how travel enriches our lives, connecting us to the past and to each other. As we continue our journey through The Burren, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
