Solo Art Exploration on Naoshima Island
Day 6: Art, Nature, and Tranquility: Exploring the Soul of Naoshima
Immerse yourself in Naoshima's artful blend of culture and nature, from Walking Ark's sculptures to the serene Cultural Melting Bath.
A Day of Artistic Immersion
Today was a day dedicated to exploring the more contemplative side of Naoshima. Leaving behind the bustling energy of the main museums, I set out to discover the island's hidden gems, places where art and nature intertwine in unexpected ways. It was a day of quiet reflection, punctuated by moments of surprising beauty and delightful local flavors.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Café Ippo in Honmura. Finding it was a little adventure in itself, as it blends so seamlessly into the traditional Japanese homes nearby. The cafe is near Minamidera, and stepping inside felt like entering someone's cozy home. The vegan fare was delightful, and I savored every bite of the delicious food. The staff were so friendly, making me feel instantly welcome. It was a perfect start to the day, fueling me up for the explorations ahead.

Art isn't just something you look at; it's something that changes how you see the world.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards the Walking Ark. The walk itself was a journey through the charming streets of Naoshima, where traditional houses stand side-by-side with modern art installations. It's a fascinating blend of old and new, a testament to the island's unique character. I eventually reached the Walking Ark, a captivating open-air museum nestled in the town of Ogicho. The ark, created by Keisuke Yamaguchi, is inspired by Noah's Ark, appearing like a mountain range with legs. It was created as a reminder of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, envisioning the work walking off towards Fukushima Prefecture. The sculptures and artistic exhibits were thoughtfully integrated into the natural landscape, creating a serene and inspirational environment. I wandered through the beautifully curated paths, where art and nature intertwined, offering moments of quiet reflection and awe. The tranquil setting, complete with lush greenery and scenic views, provided the perfect backdrop for photography, allowing me to capture the essence of this unique place.

After immersing myself in the artistry of the Walking Ark, I made my way to the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. This outdoor work at the Benesse House Museum is a fascinating blend of Feng Shui principles and artistic expression. While the bathing experience is typically reserved for Benesse House hotel guests, I was content to admire the site and imagine the tranquility of soaking in the Chinese herbal medicinal bath while gazing out at the Seto Inland Sea. The Cultural Melting Bath is built on the coast of Naoshima with the strongest flow of energy, based on the philosophy of Feng Shui. The stones are from China and an American-made Jacuzzi tab are arranged according to Feng Shui. It was a reminder to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the present moment.

Next on the agenda was the Naoshima Fishing Park, a tranquil retreat by the sea. The park is designed to accommodate both novice and experienced anglers, providing the necessary amenities for a day of fishing. I decided to simply enjoy the scenery. I took a leisurely walk along the waterfront, soaking in the natural surroundings and watching the local fishermen at work. It was a peaceful escape from the crowds, a chance to connect with the island's natural beauty. The park opens daily from 7 AM to 5 PM, allowing ample time for visitors to enjoy all that this beautiful location has to offer.

As evening approached, I found myself drawn to Raumen Tsumu for dinner. This ramen restaurant is known for its authentic dishes, fresh ingredients, and cozy atmosphere. I savored a bowl of their signature ramen, enjoying the rich flavors and comforting warmth. The friendly staff made me feel like a local, sharing stories and laughter as I ate. It was a perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I decided to check out Cin.na.mon, a bar near Miyanoura Port. The bar has a funky ambiance and is known for its excellent food, including generously portioned dishes. It was a cozy spot to unwind, sip on a local drink, and reflect on the day's adventures. The atmosphere was inviting, and I struck up a conversation with a few locals, sharing stories and laughter. It was a reminder of the warmth and hospitality that permeates Naoshima.

As I walked back to my lodge, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Naoshima had once again revealed its magic, offering a blend of art, nature, and tranquility that nourished my soul. It's a place where creativity thrives, where the past and present intertwine, and where the simple pleasures of life are celebrated. I am already excited about tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to the Ando Museum, Kasaneiwa, and Teshima Art Museum. The island continues to surprise and inspire me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Tomorrow I plan to catch a ferry to Teshima Island to visit the Teshima Art Museum and explore the island's unique landscape. I've heard it's a completely different experience from Naoshima, more raw and untouched, and I'm eager to discover its hidden corners. I'll make sure to pack my camera and comfortable shoes, ready for another day of adventure and artistic immersion. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the discoveries that await me on Teshima Island.
I’m also looking forward to having breakfast at Akaito Coffee, lunch at RestaurantEN, and dinner at Gumbo Hut Shioya. I might even stop by the 7-Eleven Naoshima Shop to pick up some snacks for the next day.
This solo journey has been a reminder of the power of art to transform our perspectives and connect us to something larger than ourselves. Naoshima has a way of slowing down time, inviting us to savor each moment and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. It's a gift that I will carry with me long after I leave this enchanting island.
