Day 7: Art, Serenity, and Cajun Spice: A Day of Discovery on Naoshima and Teshima
Immerse yourself in art, nature, and unexpected flavors as I explore the Ando Museum, Kasaneiwa, and the Teshima Art Museum.
Island Hopping: Art, Nature, and a Dash of Cajun Spice
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of serene art spaces, natural wonders, and a surprising culinary twist. I set out to explore more of what Naoshima and its neighboring island, Teshima, had to offer, and the experience was nothing short of enriching. It's amazing how much beauty and inspiration can be found in such a small corner of the world.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Akaito Coffee. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the cozy café, a perfect start to the day. I opted for one of their signature roasts, paired with a warm scone. The café itself is a delightful space, filled with books and magazines, creating a haven for coffee lovers and those seeking a quiet corner. I even spotted some denim accessories crafted by the co-owner, a unique touch that added to the café's charm. It's these little discoveries that make traveling so rewarding.

Fuelled up, I headed to the Ando Museum, nestled in the Honmura district. From the outside, it appears as a traditional Japanese house, blending seamlessly with the surrounding streetscape. But stepping inside is like entering another world. The interior is a striking contrast, a series of concrete spaces designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando. The interplay of light and shadow created a sense of calm and introspection. The museum is a tribute to Ando's work and his connection to Naoshima, showcasing models and photographs of his architectural projects on the island. It was fascinating to see how he integrates modern design with traditional aesthetics.

The essence of art is not to be found in the object itself, but in the experience it evokes.
Next on my itinerary was Kasaneiwa, a site recommended by a local I met yesterday while visiting the 7-Eleven Naoshima Shop. After a long walk and up a narrow mountain road, I finally reached the stacked rocks. These rocks maintain a mysterious sense of balance, and it's unknown whether they were naturally or artificially placed this way. From there, the scenery of the Seto Inland Sea was amazing. The views were worth the trek.

Afterward, I took a ferry to Teshima Island, a short ride from Naoshima. My destination was the Teshima Art Museum, a place I had been eagerly anticipating. The museum is a collaboration between artist Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa, and it's an architectural marvel. The building resembles a water droplet, a concrete shell nestled on a hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. Inside, the space is open and airy, with two large openings allowing natural light, wind, and sounds to enter. Water continuously springs from the ground, creating a mesmerizing display. It's a place where art, nature, and architecture come together in perfect harmony. I spent a long time there, simply observing the water droplets and feeling a sense of connection with the environment. It was a truly unique and moving experience.

Before heading back to Naoshima, I stopped by the Teshima Art Museum café, designed by Ryue Nishizawa. I enjoyed a light snack and a refreshing drink, taking in the views of the surrounding rice terraces. The café is a perfect spot to reflect on the experience of the museum.
Returning to Naoshima, I decided to try something completely different for dinner. I had heard about Gumbo Hut Shioya, a Cajun restaurant on the island. It seemed like an oddity, but I was intrigued. The restaurant has a retro vibe, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The owner was incredibly friendly, and the gumbo was delicious. It was a surprising and delightful culinary experience, a taste of Louisiana in the heart of Japan. It was a great way to end a day filled with art and exploration.

Naoshima and Teshima have a way of seeping into your soul. The art isn't just something you observe; it's something you feel. It's in the way the light filters through the concrete of an Ando building, the way the water moves in the Teshima Art Museum, and the way a simple cup of coffee can bring you closer to the local culture.
