Cultural Immersion in San Miguel de Allende
Day 6: Echoes of the Past, Flavors of Today: A Day of Discovery in San Miguel de Allende
Explore San Miguel de Allende's spiritual heart and ancient mysteries, savoring local cuisine and unique finds with Aoife by my side.
Whispers of History and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took us from the deeply spiritual to the deliciously temporal, all while soaking in the unique atmosphere of San Miguel de Allende. Aoife and I embarked on a day trip that promised to be both enlightening and satisfying, and it certainly delivered on that promise. From exploring ancient ruins to savoring modern Mexican cuisine, every moment was a testament to the rich tapestry of this region.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Cocina, Café Del Viajero. This charming spot promised a taste of home-style Mexican cooking, and it did not disappoint. Nestled in a cozy corner, the café exuded a warm, inviting atmosphere, perfect for starting our day. I opted for the chilaquiles viajeros, a dish I'd heard whispers about from fellow travelers. The combination of crispy tortillas, savory sauce, and perfectly cooked eggs was a symphony of flavors, a true testament to the magic of Mexican cuisine. Aoife, ever the traditionalist, chose a classic huevos rancheros, which she declared to be the best she’d had so far on our trip. Fuelled up and ready for adventure, we set off to explore the historical and archaeological wonders that awaited us.

Our first stop was the Santuario de Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, a Baroque masterpiece often called the “Sistine Chapel of Mexico”. Located a short drive from San Miguel, the sanctuary stands as a testament to the region's rich religious history and artistic heritage. As we approached, the simple facade of the church gave little hint of the visual feast that awaited us inside.

Stepping through the doors was like entering another world. Every inch of the walls and ceilings was covered in vibrant murals, intricate paintings, and detailed sculptures. The sheer density of the artwork was overwhelming, a powerful expression of faith and artistic devotion. The sanctuary was founded in 1740 by Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro, who sought to create a space inspired by the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. His vision came to life in the form of this extraordinary complex, which served as a spiritual retreat and a center for religious contemplation. Aoife, with her librarian’s eye for detail, was particularly fascinated by the stories depicted in the murals, each one a window into the religious fervor of the 18th century. I found myself captivated by the sheer scale of the project, the dedication and artistry that went into creating such a breathtaking space.
“The true journey of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
After immersing ourselves in the spiritual ambiance of Atotonilco, we ventured further into the past with a visit to Cañada de la Virgen, an Otomi archaeological site dating back to around 540 AD. This ancient ceremonial center offers a glimpse into the pre-Hispanic history of the region, a time when sophisticated civilizations thrived in what is now central Mexico. As we drove towards the site, the landscape transformed, the rolling hills giving way to a more rugged, semi-desert terrain. The air was dry and the sun beat down, a stark contrast to the lush gardens of San Miguel.

The site itself is a collection of pyramids, plazas, and platforms, each structure aligned with celestial events and imbued with symbolic meaning. Our guide explained that Cañada de la Virgen was occupied by the Otomi people, who used it as a center for astronomical observation and religious rituals. The most impressive structure is the House of the Longest Night, a pyramid aligned with the winter solstice, a testament to the Otomi’s deep understanding of the cosmos. Walking through the ruins, I felt a profound connection to the past, a sense of awe at the ingenuity and resilience of these ancient people. Aoife, always drawn to the human stories behind the history, pondered the lives of the priests and astronomers who once walked these same stones, their eyes fixed on the heavens.
After a morning of spiritual and historical exploration, our appetites were calling once again. We made our way back to San Miguel for lunch at Antonia Rooftop, a bistro-style restaurant known for its haute cuisine and panoramic views. Perched atop the Hotel Boutique El Palomar, the restaurant offered a stunning vista of the city, the iconic La Parroquia standing out against the clear blue sky. The atmosphere was relaxed and sophisticated, the perfect setting for a leisurely midday meal.

Chef Alex Cuatepotzo’s menu was a delightful mix of local and international flavors, with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. I opted for one of the more casual selections, a taco, while Aoife selected a vegan option. As we savored each bite, we marveled at the view, the city stretching out before us like a living tapestry. It was a moment of pure bliss, the perfect combination of good food, good company, and breathtaking scenery.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. A local had recommended mixta, a unique shop known for its eclectic mix of jewelry, clothing, accessories, and home decor. Located in the heart of San Miguel, the shop was a treasure trove of unique finds, each item carefully curated and beautifully displayed. Aoife, with her keen eye for design, was in her element, browsing through the colorful textiles and handcrafted jewelry. I, on the other hand, was drawn to the vintage maps and antique curiosities, each one a potential addition to my collection back in Dublin.

We spent a happy hour exploring the shop, chatting with the friendly staff, and admiring the artistry on display. Aoife found a beautiful hand-woven scarf, a perfect souvenir of our trip, while I snagged a vintage map of Mexico City, a piece of history to add to my growing collection. It was the perfect way to end our afternoon, a reminder of the vibrant culture and artistic spirit of San Miguel.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Trazo 1810 for dinner, another rooftop restaurant that promised stunning views and exquisite cuisine. Located on the terrace of the Hotel Boutique Casa 1810, the restaurant offered a different perspective of the city, the iconic Parroquia de San Miguel de Arcángel looming large in the foreground. The atmosphere was elegant and romantic, the perfect setting for a special evening with my lovely wife.

The menu at Trazo 1810 was a modern take on Mexican cuisine, with European and Asian influences. Chef José Francisco González’s creations were both visually stunning and incredibly delicious, a testament to his culinary artistry. We opted for the tasting menu, a culinary journey that took us through a range of flavors and textures. From the delicate appetizers to the rich and savory main courses, each dish was a work of art, a celebration of the region’s culinary heritage. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable, guiding us through each course with grace and enthusiasm.
As we savored our meal, we watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in a riot of colors. The Parroquia was bathed in a golden light, its silhouette a striking contrast against the darkening sky. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to a perfect day. As we walked back to La Morada, hand in hand, we reflected on the day’s adventures, the spiritual echoes of Atotonilco, the ancient mysteries of Cañada de la Virgen, and the culinary delights of San Miguel. It was a day of contrasts, a journey that had touched our hearts and nourished our souls.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the history of San Miguel with visits to the Museo Histórico Casa de Allende and the Museo de la Independencia. I’m particularly looking forward to learning more about the city’s role in the Mexican War of Independence. And, of course, we’ll be sure to find another great spot for dinner, perhaps Tunki by Handshake for a nightcap.
San Miguel de Allende continues to surprise and delight us, each day revealing new layers of its rich and complex character. It’s a place where the past and the present intertwine, where ancient traditions meet modern sensibilities, and where every corner holds a new adventure. I am so glad to be experiencing it all with Aoife.
