Adios, San Miguel!

As our ten-day cultural immersion in San Miguel de Allende draws to a close, Aoife and I find ourselves reflecting on the experiences, the flavors, and the vibrant spirit of this enchanting city. Today, our final full day, was a bittersweet symphony of exploration and farewells. We ventured beyond San Miguel's familiar cobblestone streets to discover the historical significance of Dolores Hidalgo and pay homage to a musical legend.

Our day began, as many have, with a delightful breakfast at Restaurante Cielo. The morning air was crisp, a gentle reminder that autumn was approaching, even here in sunny Mexico. The bougainvillea was in full bloom, painting the walls in vibrant hues of pink and purple. Over coffee and pastries, Aoife and I discussed our plans for the day, a mix of historical exploration and musical pilgrimage. It felt like the perfect way to round out our adventure, a final toast to the beauty and culture that had captivated us for the past week and a half.

Fueled and ready, we set off for Dolores Hidalgo, the cradle of Mexican Independence. The drive was scenic, the landscape dotted with cacti and agave plants, the quintessential symbols of the Mexican countryside. As we approached the town, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. This was where Father Miguel Hidalgo had issued his famous 'Grito de Dolores,' the cry for independence that ignited a revolution.
Dolores Hidalgo is a place where history whispers from every corner, where the spirit of independence is palpable in the air.

Stepping into the Plaza Principal, I was immediately struck by the town's vibrant atmosphere. Colorful buildings framed the square, and the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores stood proudly, its baroque facade a testament to the town's rich history. We strolled around the plaza, soaking in the sights and sounds, imagining what it must have been like on that fateful day in 1810 when Hidalgo called for an uprising.
Of course, we had to sample the famous exotic ice cream that Dolores Hidalgo is known for. Aoife, ever the adventurous one, opted for the avocado flavor, while I cautiously chose strawberries and cream. I must admit, Aoife's avocado ice cream was surprisingly delicious, a creamy, subtly sweet treat that perfectly captured the essence of the avocado. It was a far cry from my usual vanilla cone back in Dublin, but I found myself enjoying this uniquely Mexican flavor. I am glad we did not forget our reusable water bottles, as it was quite a warm day, and we needed to stay hydrated.

Next on our list was the Casa Museo José Alfredo Jiménez, a tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter. As a lover of folk music, I was particularly excited about this visit. Jiménez's music has always resonated with me, his songs a poignant reflection of love, loss, and the Mexican spirit.

The museum was a treasure trove of memorabilia, showcasing Jiménez's life and career through photographs, personal artifacts, and musical scores. Each room was named after one of his iconic songs, creating an immersive experience that transported me back to the golden age of Mexican ranchera music. I was particularly moved by the exhibits dedicated to his childhood in Dolores Hidalgo and his early struggles as a musician. It was inspiring to see how he overcame adversity to become one of Mexico's most beloved artists.
Aoife, though not as familiar with Jiménez's work as I am, was equally captivated by the museum. She was particularly impressed by the mural depicting Jiménez alongside other Mexican musical icons, a testament to his enduring legacy. We spent a good couple of hours exploring the museum, listening to his music, and learning about his life. It was a fitting tribute to a man whose songs continue to touch the hearts of millions.

After our enriching visit to Dolores Hidalgo, we returned to San Miguel de Allende, our hearts full of history and music. We took a moment to stop by Abrazos Boutique, a local shop known for its vibrant, handmade clothing and accessories. Aoife found a beautiful hand-embroidered blouse, a perfect memento of our trip. I picked up a colorful Day of the Dead tie, a fun addition to my collection of vintage maps of Dublin. It's always a pleasure to support local artisans, especially when their creations are as unique and beautiful as those at Abrazos Boutique.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Mare Nostrum Restaurant for our final dinner in San Miguel. This charming Italian trattoria had been recommended to us by several locals, and we were eager to experience its authentic Sardinian cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, the aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering sauces filling the air. We ordered family style, sharing a variety of dishes. The homemade pasta was divine, the seafood fresh and flavorful, and the pizza was cooked to perfection. It was the perfect way to celebrate our last night in San Miguel, a delicious and convivial feast shared with my favorite travel partner.

Travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new things, new flavors, new sounds, and new cultures.

As we savored our tiramisu and sipped our wine, Aoife and I reminisced about our time in San Miguel. We talked about the stunning architecture of the Parroquia, the vibrant art scene, the delicious food, and the warm hospitality of the Mexican people. We agreed that San Miguel de Allende had exceeded our expectations, a truly magical place that had captured our hearts. It was a world away from my antiques shop and our quiet life in Dublin, and that’s exactly what we needed. I know that when I am back in Dublin attending traditional Irish music sessions in pubs, I will be dreaming of the mariachi music we heard here.
Tomorrow, we begin our journey home, filled with memories and a renewed appreciation for the beauty and diversity of the world. While I'm sad to leave San Miguel, I'm also excited to return to Dublin, to share our experiences with Liam, and to start planning our next adventure. Until then, adios, San Miguel! You've been a wonderful host, and we'll never forget our time here.

As I reflect on this journey, I realize that travel is more than just ticking off destinations on a list. It's about immersing yourself in new cultures, connecting with people from different backgrounds, and expanding your horizons. It's about discovering new flavors, new sounds, and new perspectives. And most importantly, it's about creating memories that will last a lifetime. San Miguel de Allende has given us all of that and more. It's a place that will forever hold a special place in our hearts, a reminder of the beauty, the culture, and the spirit of Mexico. I can’t wait to share my photos and stories with my genealogy group back in Dublin. Perhaps I can inspire them to plan their own adventures.

And so, with a final toast to San Miguel de Allende, we bid farewell to this enchanting city, carrying with us the warmth of its people, the vibrancy of its culture, and the memories of a truly unforgettable journey. Until next time, may your travels be filled with adventure, discovery, and the joy of experiencing the world in all its beauty and wonder.
