Adieu, Kanazawa!

As my final day in Kanazawa draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I've undertaken through this culturally rich city. It's hard to believe my time here is ending, but the memories and experiences I've gathered will undoubtedly stay with me. Today was a blend of art, history, and a touch of retail therapy, perfectly encapsulating the essence of Kanazawa.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Pizzeria e Trattoria Da TAKE. It felt somewhat amusing to start my day with Italian cuisine in the heart of Japan, but the reviews were promising, and I was eager to try it. Located in the Daiwa Roynet Hotel, it was conveniently located and offered a delightful start to the day. After fuelling up, I set off to immerse myself in the local culture, starting with the Kaga-Yuzen Kimono Center.

The Kaga-Yuzen Kimono Center was a captivating experience. As an antiques dealer, I've always appreciated the artistry and craftsmanship of textiles, and Kaga-Yuzen is no exception. This center is dedicated to showcasing Kaga Yuzen, a high-end silk dyeing technique characterized by its distinctive use of color and vivid patterns, primarily for kimonos. Unlike Kyo-Yuzen, the Kaga style doesn't employ techniques like gold leaf application or embroidery, giving it a unique, original design.

I learned that the craft originated during the Edo period, flourishing under the patronage of the Maeda family. The center displayed exquisite kimonos made by notable artisans, and I was particularly fascinated by the five basic colors used: indigo, crimson, dark green, ochre, and royal purple. It was interesting to learn about the intricate and painstaking process involved, from the initial design to the final steaming and drying. Although I didn't get a chance to try my hand at dyeing, I thoroughly enjoyed browsing the finished products and learning about the history of this beautiful art form.

To truly understand a culture, one must delve into its history, art, and the everyday lives of its people.

Next on my itinerary was a visit to Shirakawa-go Gassho-Zukuri Minka-en.

This open-air museum features traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, a temple, a watermill, and a café. These iconic houses, with their steeply pitched thatched roofs, are designed to withstand heavy snow, a common sight during the winter months. Although it's late August, I could still appreciate the lush green landscape surrounding the village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Walking through the Minka-en, I felt transported back in time. The museum preserves and exhibits 25 gassho-zukuri houses, including nine important cultural relics. I explored the interiors of some of the houses, admiring the traditional furnishings and learning about the daily lives of the people who once lived there. It was fascinating to see the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the villagers, who adapted their homes and lifestyles to the challenging mountain environment.

Before leaving Shirakawa-go, I stopped for lunch at Takasakiya.

This charming sushi bar, located near Kanazawa Station, is known for its fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan and reasonable prices. I opted for one of their omakase sets, allowing the chef to select the best seasonal offerings. The sushi was indeed fresh and delicious, and I particularly enjoyed trying some of the local specialties. The staff were courteous and efficient, adding to the pleasant dining experience.

With a full stomach and a renewed appreciation for Japanese history, I made my way to the Kanazawa City Ashigaru Museum.

Nestled in the heart of Kanazawa, this museum offers a glimpse into the lives of the ashigaru, the lower-ranked samurai foot soldiers during the Edo period. The museum features two impeccably preserved traditional houses, showcasing the relatively austere lifestyle of these soldiers and their families.

Unlike many regions where ashigaru lived in cramped row houses, the Kaga Domain provided them with detached homes and private gardens, reflecting the domain's relative wealth and progressive policies. As I explored the houses, I could imagine the daily routines of the ashigaru, their families, and the challenges they faced. The museum provided a valuable insight into the social structure of feudal Japan and the lives of those who were often overlooked in historical accounts.

To cap off my day, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Rinto 100 Bangai Kanazawa.

This shopping mall, located within Kanazawa Station, offers a wide range of products and services, from traditional crafts to contemporary fashion. I browsed through the various shops, picking up a few souvenirs for Aoife and Liam. I also enjoyed a cup of coffee at a local café, watching the hustle and bustle of the station.

As I sit here in my hotel room, reflecting on my time in Kanazawa, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and appreciation. This city has exceeded all my expectations, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the artistry of Kaga-Yuzen to the charm of Shirakawa-go and the echoes of samurai in the Ashigaru Museum, Kanazawa has left an indelible mark on my soul. I'm glad I remembered to pack my notebook, as I have a feeling I'll be referencing these experiences for a long time to come.

I'm also grateful for the opportunity to share my journey with you, my readers. Your support and encouragement have made this experience even more meaningful. As I prepare to leave Kanazawa tomorrow, I know that I will carry the memories of this incredible city with me always. While there's no specific itinerary for tomorrow, as it marks the end of my trip, I'm already looking forward to returning to Dublin and sharing my stories with Aoife and Liam. Until next time, sayōnara from Kanazawa!

And who knows, perhaps my next adventure will be inspired by the exquisite craftsmanship of Kanazawa, leading me to uncover some hidden textile treasures back in Dublin. The world is full of surprises, and I'm eager to see what awaits me next.

Before I turn in for the night, I plan to have dinner at Gyokusen-tei.
