Solo Adventure in the Majestic Geirangerfjord
Day 1: Chasing Views and Fjords in Geiranger: A Norwegian Fairytale Begins
Embark on a breathtaking journey through Geiranger, Norway, exploring stunning viewpoints and savoring local flavors on day one.
A Majestic Start to My Geiranger Adventure
After a long journey from Dublin, involving a flight to Oslo and then Ålesund, followed by a scenic drive, I finally arrived in Geiranger. The anticipation had been building for months, and I was eager to immerse myself in the famed beauty of this Norwegian fjord. This solo trip is a chance for me to reconnect with nature and enjoy some personal reflection, something that's been missing since I got busy with the antique shop back in Dublin. I'm ready to see what Geiranger has in store for me!
The first order of business was breakfast. I ventured to CaféOlé, a charming spot in the heart of Geiranger. The café was bustling with tourists and locals alike, all eager to start their day. I ordered a strong coffee and a traditional Norwegian pastry, settling in at a table by the window. The coffee was rich and flavorful, the pastry sweet and satisfying, and the view of the village waking up was simply delightful. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.
With a full stomach and a sense of excitement, I set off to Flydalsjuvet, a viewpoint located about 4 kilometers from Geiranger. The drive itself was stunning, with winding roads offering glimpses of the fjord through the trees. Arriving at Flydalsjuvet, I was immediately struck by the panoramic vista. The Geirangerfjord stretched out before me, its deep blue waters framed by towering mountains. The view was split into two areas, an upper and a lower plateau. It was easy to see why this spot is one of the most photographed in Norway. I took my time soaking in the scenery, snapping photos, and simply marveling at the grandeur of nature. It reminded me of the landscapes I used to see in Vermont, but on a much grander scale.

The beauty of Geiranger is not just in its scenery, but in the feeling of being utterly immersed in nature's grandeur.
Next on the agenda was Ørnesvingen Viewpoint, another must-see location for its breathtaking views. The drive to Ørnesvingen was an adventure in itself, involving a series of hairpin turns that climbed steeply up the mountainside. This road, known as the Eagle Road, was quite the experience! Reaching the top, I was rewarded with yet another stunning panorama. From this vantage point, I could see the Geirangerfjord winding its way through the landscape, with the Seven Sisters waterfalls cascading down the cliffs on one side and the charming village of Geiranger nestled at the fjord's end. The glass decoration at the viewing platform added a unique artistic touch to the experience.

After soaking in the views from Ørnesvingen, it was time for lunch. I headed to Brasserie Posten, a restaurant beautifully situated by the fjord in the old post office building. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with large windows offering stunning views of the water. I ordered a traditional Norwegian dish, savoring the flavors of local ingredients while enjoying the picturesque scenery. It was a delightful culinary experience that perfectly complemented the day's adventures.

With the afternoon sun beginning to mellow, I decided to explore the Geirangerfjorden itself. I took a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, admiring the boats bobbing in the harbor and the charming buildings that lined the shore. The air was crisp and clean, and the atmosphere was peaceful and serene. It was easy to see why this fjord is a UNESCO World Heritage site; its beauty is simply unparalleled. I thought of Aoife back home, and how much she would have loved this place. Perhaps I'll bring her here next time.

Before dinner, I popped into Made in Fjords Horno, a local shop known for its handcrafted souvenirs. I browsed the selection of unique items, admiring the skill and artistry of the local craftspeople. I picked up a small wooden carving as a memento of my visit, a tangible reminder of the beauty and charm of Geiranger. It's always nice to support local artisans, a practice I also try to uphold with my antique shop in Dublin.

As evening approached, I made my way to Westerås Restaurant for dinner. Located on a mountain ledge just above the hotel, the restaurant offered stunning views of the fjord and surrounding landscape. The old barn has been transformed into a cozy restaurant, where you can enjoy delicious dinners and lunch dishes, as well as waffles, coffee, and ice cream. I indulged in a delicious meal of local specialties, savoring each bite while watching the sun set over the fjord. The experience was truly magical, a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Reflecting on my first day in Geiranger, I am filled with a sense of awe and gratitude. The natural beauty of this place is simply breathtaking, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to explore it. As I head back to my guesthouse for the night, I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which include a kayak trip to the Seven Sisters waterfalls and a visit to the Geiranger-Herdalen Landskapsvernområde. I might even stop by Geiranger Bryggeri for a local brew. Until then, I'll dream of fjords and mountains, and the magic of Norway.
It’s moments like these that remind me why I started this travel blog in the first place – to share the wonder and beauty of the world with others, and perhaps inspire them to embark on their own adventures. Maybe Liam will read this and get inspired to travel more, instead of just focusing on his studies.
