Day 8: Chasing the Views: A Day Above Geirangerfjord
Discover Geirangerfjord's stunning vistas from Blair's View Point to Queen's Chair, enjoying local cuisine and vibrant nightlife.
High Above the Fjord
Today was all about perspective – literally. I set out to capture the essence of Geirangerfjord from its most celebrated vantage points, and the day certainly delivered breathtaking scenery and a taste of local life. It’s amazing how a shift in altitude can completely transform one's understanding of a place, and today, Geirangerfjord revealed its soul from the heights.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Geiranger Brygge. Situated right by the fjord, this charming spot offered the perfect start. Sipping my coffee while watching the early morning light dance on the water was incredibly peaceful. It's funny, back in Dublin, I always rush my mornings, but here, time seems to slow down, inviting you to savor every moment. I made a mental note to bring some of this tranquility back home with me. The simple breakfast of local bread and cheese was delicious, providing the fuel I needed for a day of exploration.
First on the agenda was Blair's View Point. The drive there was scenic, with glimpses of the fjord peeking through the trees. Arriving at the viewpoint, I was immediately struck by the panoramic vista. The Geirangerfjord stretched out before me, framed by towering cliffs and verdant slopes. It was a postcard-perfect scene, and I spent a good while simply soaking it in. I even took a few photographs, hoping to capture the magic of the moment. This spot is perfect for photography enthusiasts, and I wished I hadn’t forgotten my binoculars to fully appreciate the views.

Next, I ventured towards Ruinen. While the name might suggest ancient ruins, it turned out to be more of a scenic spot along the way, offering a different perspective of the landscape. I learned that 'Ruinen' simply means 'the ruins' in Norwegian, a testament to the area's rich history. It was a quiet, contemplative place, and I found myself reflecting on the stories of the people who had lived here, carving out a life in this dramatic landscape. It made me think of my own roots, my ancestors in Vermont, and the challenges they faced. I spent some time just wandering around the area, enjoying the peace and quiet.

Lunch was at Restaurant Olebuda, located in the pedestrian street in the center of Geiranger. This summer restaurant was bustling with activity, and I managed to snag a table outside. The Norwegian cuisine was delicious, and I opted for the catch of the day, a perfectly grilled piece of sea bass. While enjoying my meal, I couldn't help but eavesdrop on the conversations around me, snippets of different languages mingling in the air. It was a reminder of how Geirangerfjord attracts visitors from all corners of the globe, all drawn by the allure of its natural beauty.

Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that lead us to breathtaking views and unexpected moments of reflection.
After lunch, I made my way to Queen's Chair. The hike up was invigorating, and the views along the way were simply stunning. The Queen's Chair itself is a natural viewpoint that resembles a regal throne, offering unparalleled views of the Geirangerfjord. Standing there, I felt like royalty, surveying my kingdom. I learned that Queen Sonja of Norway had inaugurated the spot, further adding to its regal charm. The panoramic vista was truly awe-inspiring, and I spent a good hour simply taking it all in. I imagined Aoife would have loved this view, and I promised myself to bring her here someday.

As evening approached, I decided to indulge in a bit of nightlife at Bachus Lounge & Club. The bar had a modern yet relaxed atmosphere, and I enjoyed a local beer while chatting with some fellow travelers. The music was good, and the vibe was lively, a perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. I even tried my hand at some Norwegian phrases, much to the amusement of the locals. It's always fun to immerse yourself in the local culture, even if it means making a fool of yourself.

Dinner was at Låna Restaurant & Bar. I opted for the pizza, which was surprisingly good. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the service was friendly and efficient. It was the perfect spot to reflect on the day's adventures, and I made a mental note to recommend it to other travelers. I also made a note to self, to maybe try the mussels or the fish soup next time.

Tomorrow, I am planning to explore Gjerdefossen and the Seven Sisters Waterfall, and also take a boat tour with Geiranger Fjordservice AS. Before that, I will have breakfast at CaféOlé. I am also planning to have lunch at Brasserie Posten and dinner at Westerås Restaurant. I am also hoping to do some shopping at ROST before I leave.
As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had today. Geirangerfjord has a way of captivating you, drawing you into its embrace. It's a place where nature reigns supreme, and where the simple act of observing the landscape can fill you with a sense of wonder.
