Fes: A Symphony of Past and Present
Today was a day of incredible contrasts, a journey through time that left me breathless. From the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis to the vibrant, bustling heart of Fez, I experienced Morocco in all its multifaceted glory. It's days like these that remind me why I traded my quiet life in Dublin for the open road.
My day began early, with a hearty breakfast at La Breva. I chose it for the promise of a rooftop view, and it didn't disappoint. Sipping on strong Moroccan coffee, I gazed out over the sprawling city, the morning sun casting a golden glow on the ancient medina. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

The Fes-Volubilis Tour was first on the agenda, and I was eager to escape the city for a glimpse into Morocco's Roman past. The drive to Volubilis was scenic, the landscape unfolding in a tapestry of rolling hills and olive groves. It reminded me a bit of the Vermont countryside where I grew up, only with a distinctly North African flair.

Volubilis itself was awe-inspiring. Walking through the ruins, I could almost hear the echoes of Roman life, imagining bustling marketplaces and grand villas. The mosaics were particularly stunning, intricate patterns and vibrant colors preserved through the centuries. It's amazing to think that this city thrived over two thousand years ago. I spent hours wandering through the site, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of this ancient place.
The past is never dead. It's not even past.
After Volubilis, the tour took us to Palais Mnebhi, a jewel of Fassi architecture. The palace is a testament to the opulence of a bygone era, its walls adorned with intricate mosaics and carved cedarwood. I learned that the palace played a significant role in Moroccan history, serving as the site where the Treaty of Fes was signed in 1912, establishing French colonial rule. It’s incredible to stand in a place where history was made.

From the Palais Mnebhi, I ventured into the Fez Bazar. What a sensory explosion! The narrow streets teemed with life, a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells. Merchants hawked their wares, donkeys clip-clopped through the crowds, and the aroma of spices hung heavy in the air. It was chaotic, exhilarating, and utterly captivating.

I spent hours lost in the labyrinthine souks, browsing everything from leather goods and pottery to spices and carpets. Haggling is an art form here, and I found myself enjoying the banter with the merchants, even when I knew I was probably still paying too much. I picked up a beautiful hand-woven rug, a reminder of my time in Fes, and a small leather pouch, perfect for carrying coins.
Lunch was at Restaurant Tresor Fes, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the medina. I opted for a traditional tagine, a slow-cooked stew of meat and vegetables, infused with fragrant spices. It was delicious, and the rooftop setting offered stunning views of the city. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and I enjoyed chatting with them about Fassi cuisine and culture.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Les Jardins de Sheherazade for dinner. The restaurant is located in a beautifully restored riad, a traditional Moroccan house with an interior garden. The atmosphere was magical, with soft lighting, fragrant flowers, and the gentle sound of water trickling in the courtyard fountain. The food was exquisite, a refined take on classic Moroccan dishes. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty and tranquility.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Zen Garden, a bar recommended for its relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring. I sipped on a refreshing mint tea, listening to the gentle sounds of Moroccan music, and reflected on all that I had seen and done.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Dar Batha Museum, Borj Sud, and the Henna Souk and pottery. I'm particularly interested in seeing the Dar Batha Museum, as I've heard it houses a fascinating collection of Moroccan art and artifacts. I also plan to check out Medin Art for some unique finds.
Fes is a city that gets under your skin, a place where ancient history and modern life intertwine in a captivating dance. It's a city of contrasts, of beauty and chaos, of tradition and innovation. And it's a city that I know I will never forget.
Back at the guesthouse, I realized I'd forgotten my Arabic phrasebook. I'll have to pick one up tomorrow. And perhaps an extra phone charger; my battery is always running low from taking so many photos!
As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about Aoife and Liam back in Dublin. I imagined telling them about my adventures, sharing stories of ancient ruins, bustling souks, and fragrant gardens. I miss them, but I know that this journey is something I need to do, a chance to reconnect with myself and discover new perspectives. And who knows, maybe one day I'll convince them to join me on an adventure of their own.
Experience the rich history and vibrant culture of Fes, Morocco, on a solo adventure exploring ancient medinas and savoring local cuisine.
