Solo Cultural Exploration in Fes, Morocco
Day 7: A Sunday Stroll Through History and Art in Fes
Exploring the cultural gems of Fes: from the artistic Dar Batha Museum to the panoramic views of Borj Sud and the vibrant Henna Souk.
Fes's Cultural Embrace
Today was a day of immersing myself in the heart of Fes, a city where history whispers from every corner and art bursts forth in a riot of color and form. It was a Sunday, and the city seemed to breathe at a slightly slower pace, perfect for soaking in its cultural riches. I set out with a sense of anticipation, eager to discover the stories woven into the fabric of this ancient Moroccan city.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at La Kasbah de Fes. The traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee set the stage for a day of exploration. With a spring in my step, I made my way to the Dar Batha Museum, eager to delve into the world of Moroccan art and history. The air was crisp, with a hint of the day's warmth to come – typical of Fes in February, I'm learning.
The Dar Batha Museum, housed in a stunning 19th-century palace, was a treasure trove of Moroccan artistry. The museum was established in 1915, and before that, the building was a palace of Arab-Andalusian style, built by Moulay el Hassan in the late nineteenth century. I wandered through rooms filled with intricately carved wood, vibrant embroidery, and exquisite zellige tilework. The highlight for me was the Fes pottery collection, showcasing the city's iconic cobalt-blue designs. As an antiques dealer, I was particularly drawn to the ancient instruments, imagining the music they once created.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Leaving the museum, I decided to head to Borj Sud, a fortress perched on a hill overlooking the city. The walk was a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. The city unfolded before me, a tapestry of rooftops and winding alleyways, all set against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. Borj Sud was constructed in 1582 by the Saadian dynasty. It reminded me of similar forts I've seen in Portugal, with its robust structure and strategic design. Standing there, I could almost feel the weight of history, imagining the soldiers who once guarded this ancient city.

After soaking in the views, I made my way down to the Henna Souk, a bustling marketplace filled with the sights and smells of traditional Moroccan life. The souk was dominated by a graceful plane tree, providing shade for the vendors selling pottery and traditional cosmetics, including henna. I watched as women adorned their hands with intricate henna designs, a tradition passed down through generations. The mohtassib (price controller) used to have his office here, and you can still see his large scales.

I couldn't resist purchasing a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl, a memento of my time in Fes. Medin Art was next on my list, a shop recommended for its unique artisanal creations. I was not disappointed. The shop was a delightful showcase of Moroccan craftsmanship, featuring everything from clothing and jewelry to home decor. It's owned by Laurence Alberro, a Frenchwoman, and it's been praised for its unique and modern take on traditional Moroccan designs. I picked up a beautiful handwoven scarf for Aoife, a small token to remind her of my travels.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Fez & Friends, a cozy restaurant just outside the medina. I opted for the vegan falafel bowl, a delicious and satisfying meal that fueled me for the rest of the day's adventures. The cafe is known for serving traditional Moroccan dishes and international food. It's a popular spot for both locals and tourists, and I can see why. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere was relaxed, and the food was excellent.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Dar Roumana for dinner. This restaurant, nestled in a riad, offered a more refined dining experience. The Franco-Moroccan fusion cuisine was a delight, with each dish a work of art. The ambiance was intimate and romantic, a perfect way to end a day of exploration. The head chef, Younes Idrissi, uses local produce to reflect the seasons of the Fes medina. The flavors were a perfect blend of Moroccan and Mediterranean influences, a testament to the city's diverse cultural heritage.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Fes had already captured my heart. It's a city that stimulates the senses, challenges the mind, and nourishes the soul. As I walked back to my guesthouse, the sounds of the city faded into a gentle hum, and I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the adventures that awaited me tomorrow.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Mosque and University Kairaouine, Place Rcif, and Mellah. I might even check out Felix Club Fes for a nightcap.
I must remember to purchase an Arabic phrasebook and an extra phone charger; I knew I had forgotten something!
As I settled in for the night, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this solo journey. It’s a chance to connect with a new culture and learn a little more about myself in the process. I am already looking forward to sharing my stories with Aoife when I return to Dublin.
The Fez Spiritual Marathon took place today. I saw many participants during my exploration of the city.
February in Fes is proving to be a truly enchanting time. The weather is mild, the crowds are thin, and the city is alive with culture and history. If you're looking for an authentic Moroccan experience, I highly recommend visiting Fes in the winter months.
Back in Dublin, Liam will be starting to think about college options. I must remember to call him when I get a chance. I am sure Aoife is keeping him on the right track.
And as I drift off to sleep, I think about the quote by Marcel Proust, which perfectly encapsulates my day in Fes:
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.
The Berber carpets I saw today reminded me of a story Aoife told me about how they are woven with stories of the weaver, and the patterns and colors tell of love, loss, and life. I must remember to look into this further.
I am looking forward to tomorrow's adventure already!
