A City Unveiled

Today was all about seeing Orvieto from new perspectives, both literally and figuratively. I set out to climb high and delve into the historical heart of this city, eager to uncover more of its secrets. It's funny how a change in vantage point can offer a completely different understanding of a place.

My day began, as many of my mornings in Italy do, with a delightful breakfast at Trattoria Da Carlo. It's becoming a comforting ritual, fueling up with strong coffee and a pastry before setting off to explore. The friendly atmosphere and the promise of a new day always put a spring in my step. I was able to enjoy some cannellini beans with truffles.

First on the agenda was the Torre del Moro. I was excited to climb to the top and see Orvieto spread out beneath me. The tower, originally part of the Della Terza family's tower house, has quite the history, having even been owned by the Pope at one point. The climb was invigorating. I took the lift part of the way, but the final ascent involved a good number of steps. I paused every so often, catching my breath and peering out of the windows at the terracotta rooftops and winding streets below. The tower stands approximately 47 meters tall.

Reaching the top was absolutely worth it. The panoramic view was breathtaking. From up there, I could see the Duomo in all its glory, the rolling hills of Umbria stretching into the distance, and even the Apennine Mountains far away. It was a perfect reminder of why I love to travel – to witness the beauty and grandeur of the world from unique vantage points. I spent a good while simply soaking it all in, feeling a sense of peace and awe. It felt good to touch the sky.

Sometimes, the best way to understand a place is to see it from above, to gain a wider perspective on its history, its layout, and its beauty.

After descending from the Torre del Moro, I made my way to the Palazzo Del Capitano Del Popolo. This palace has a fascinating history, originally built as a papal residence in 1156 before becoming the seat of the Podestà and later the Captain of the People. The building has served many purposes over the centuries, including time as a courthouse. I learned that the palace, dating back to the thirteenth century, was originally built at the behest of the Pope but was soon ceded to the municipality of Orvieto to house the administration.

The architecture of the Palazzo is impressive, with its late-Romanesque-Gothic style and its beautiful façade. I admired the arches, the mullioned windows, and the intricate brickwork. The Palazzo now houses municipal offices and is used for cultural events and meetings. I imagined what it must have been like to be a part of the city's governance centuries ago, making important decisions within those very walls. I was unable to visit the inside, but I was still able to admire the external appearance.

For lunch, I decided to try Antica Fiaschetteria Orvietana. The restaurant had a rustic and familial atmosphere, and I was eager to sample some local cuisine. I opted for a hearty pasta dish with truffles, a regional specialty. The flavors were rich and satisfying, and the portion was generous. It was the perfect midday meal to refuel after my morning of exploration.

As the afternoon sun began to dip lower in the sky, I found myself drawn to the Blue Bar. I was in need of a little refreshment. This cozy bar is known for its friendly atmosphere and its wide selection of drinks. I ordered a glass of local wine and sat outside, watching the locals and tourists stroll by. It was a perfect spot for people-watching, and I enjoyed the lively ambiance of the city. I ended up staying longer than I intended, chatting with some of the other patrons and enjoying the warm summer evening.

Dinner tonight was at Ristorante Maurizio, located near the Duomo. This family-owned restaurant is housed in a 14th-century medieval building and is known for its traditional Umbrian cuisine. The atmosphere was elegant and welcoming. I decided to try the lasagna. The house black label wine was also a treat.

As I walked back to the Grand Hotel Italia, I reflected on the day's adventures. Orvieto had once again surprised me with its beauty, its history, and its charm. From the heights of the Torre del Moro to the depths of its historical buildings, I had gained a new appreciation for this remarkable city. I am excited for tomorrow, when I plan to delve deeper into Orvieto's Etruscan roots with a visit to the Etruscan Museum and the Necropoli etrusca di Crocifisso del Tufo. I'm also looking forward to trying Vis à Vis for breakfast, Tipica Trattoria Etrusca for lunch, and Ristorante L'antica Rupe for dinner.
