Unveiling the serene beauty of Serra da Estrela: Lagoa das Salgadeiras, Penedo c'Abana, and local flavors create unforgettable family memories.
Serra Secrets Unveiled
Today was a day of exploration and wonder here in Serra da Estrela. We ventured off the beaten path, seeking out the hidden gems that this stunning region has to offer. From tranquil lagoons to balancing rocks and charming local shops, it was a day filled with discoveries and delightful surprises. Join me as I recount our adventures, sharing the beauty and charm we encountered along the way.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Casa do Clube. This charming spot, nestled in the heart of Serra da Estrela, had a picturesque interior with a relaxed, mountain vibe. The stone and wood decor, along with a roaring fireplace, created a cozy atmosphere that made us feel right at home. I opted for a traditional Portuguese pastry and a strong coffee, while Maximilian enjoyed a selection of local cheeses and Astrid devoured a warm croissant. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the natural wonders that awaited us.
Our first stop was the breathtaking Lagoa das Salgadeiras. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a stunning panorama of rocks shaped by ice. The lagoon itself was a serene oasis, reflecting the clear blue sky and surrounding hills. It's easy to see why this is one of the most visited spots in the region, with its accessible location and incredible scenery. We spent a good hour simply walking around the lagoon, taking in the views and snapping photos. Astrid was particularly fascinated by the rock formations, imagining them as castles and dragons. Maximilian, ever the geologist at heart, explained how the ice age had sculpted the landscape over millennia.

The beauty of Serra da Estrela lies not only in its majestic landscapes but also in the simple joys of discovering its hidden corners.
Next on our itinerary was the intriguing 'Criança con mensaje' (Child with a Message). Though the exact meaning remained elusive, the location itself was quite special. We found a serene spot where Astrid enjoyed running around, playing hide-and-seek among the trees. The fresh mountain air and peaceful surroundings were a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It was a moment of simple joy, watching Astrid explore and laugh in the heart of nature. It reminded me of my own childhood adventures in Eksjö, Sweden, where the forests were my playground and imagination knew no bounds.

Our quest for unique experiences led us to Miradouro do Penedo c'Abana, also known as Penedo Oscilante (Swinging Rock). This scenic viewpoint offered breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. The rock itself, a massive boulder, was quite a sight. Legend has it that the rock can be made to swing or 'c'abana' if you find the right spot and apply a bit of pressure. Maximilian, ever the engineer, was determined to make it move. After several attempts and a bit of teamwork, we managed to get the rock to budge ever so slightly. Astrid squealed with delight, convinced we had magical powers.

After our geological adventures, it was time for lunch. We headed to Churrasqueira Serrana in Loriga, a local favorite known for its friendly service and well-prepared Portuguese dishes. The restaurant had a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere, and the aroma of grilled meats filled the air. We ordered a selection of traditional dishes, including fried horse mackerel with green rice and the house specialty, Cabrito (goat). The food was hearty and delicious, providing the perfect fuel for our afternoon activities.

With our bellies full, we decided to indulge in a bit of local shopping. Essências da Serra caught my eye with its promise of regional and artisanal products. The shop was a treasure trove of local delights, from Serra da Estrela cheese to handmade woolens and burel items. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a small jar of local honey and a beautifully crafted wool scarf. Astrid, of course, gravitated towards the sweets, and we left with a bag of traditional Portuguese candies.

As evening approached, we made our way to Restaurante Steakhouse Alfátima for dinner. This restaurant, nestled in the heart of Serra da Estrela, offered a refined yet rustic ambiance, perfect for a family meal. The menu featured a mix of Portuguese and Italian cuisine, with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options to cater to all tastes. We started with a selection of tapas, including local cheeses and cured meats, followed by hearty main courses. Maximilian opted for a steak, while I chose the vegetarian pasta dish. Astrid, as always, was happy with a simple Margherita pizza.

The day ended with a sense of contentment and gratitude. Serra da Estrela had revealed its hidden charms, offering us a blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and culinary delights. As we drove back to our accommodation, the stars began to emerge, twinkling like diamonds against the dark sky. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
Tomorrow, we plan to venture a bit further afield, exploring the historical city of Viseu. We'll visit the Palácio dos Condes de Anadia, Viseu Cathedral, and Museu Nacional Grão Vasco, immersing ourselves in the region's rich history and art. I'm particularly excited about visiting the Viseu Cathedral, as I've always been fascinated by medieval architecture. I'm also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Quinta do Sangrinhal for lunch and O Vicente for dinner. And perhaps, if time allows, we'll enjoy a drink at Con.M'Irla bar, soaking in the local atmosphere.
As I reflect on our adventures today, I'm reminded of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. Whether it's the beauty of a tranquil lagoon, the thrill of making a rock swing, or the joy of sharing a meal with loved ones, these are the moments that make travel so rewarding. Serra da Estrela has a way of capturing your heart and soul, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime. And as we prepare for another day of exploration, I'm filled with excitement and anticipation for what tomorrow may bring.
