Farewell, Serra da Estrela!

As our family adventure in Serra da Estrela draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. Today was a day of savoring the last moments, immersing ourselves in the local culture, and creating memories that we'll cherish for a lifetime. From wine tasting to exploring serene gardens and a spiritual encounter, it was a perfect farewell to this beautiful region.

Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Império in Loriga. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Portuguese coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead. I savored a *pastel de nata*, while Maximilian enjoyed a hearty *sandes de leitão* (suckling pig sandwich), and Astrid devoured her usual *pão com manteiga* (bread with butter). It was a simple yet satisfying start, fueling us for the day's adventures.

Our first stop was Solar Do Dao Wine in Viseu. Though slightly outside Serra da Estrela, it was well worth the drive. I've always enjoyed learning about wine production, and I was excited to introduce Maximilian and Astrid to the flavors of the Dão region. The *solar* itself was beautiful, with a rich history dating back centuries. We took a tour of the facilities, learning about the traditional methods used by local winemakers. The air was filled with the sweet scent of grapes, and I could see Astrid's eyes widen as she watched the process. Of course, we participated in a wine tasting, with expert sommeliers guiding us through a carefully curated selection of wines sourced directly from local vineyards. Maximilian, ever the wine enthusiast, was in his element, swirling, sniffing, and savoring each sip. I particularly enjoyed the elegant reds, while Astrid was content with her grape juice, feeling like a grown-up participating in the experience. Although Astrid couldn't taste the wine, the staff was incredibly accommodating, making her feel included by explaining the smells and colors, which I thought was a very nice gesture.

Next on our itinerary was Santar Vila Jardim. This historic village, with its continuous garden terraces, was a sight to behold. We strolled through the gardens, admiring the meticulously designed landscapes and vibrant flowers. Astrid was particularly enchanted by the Magnolia Garden, her laughter echoing through the serene space. The blend of history, gardens, and vineyards created a unique and enchanting atmosphere. We learned about the Vasconcellos and Sousa family's efforts to preserve and value the village's heritage, a truly inspiring endeavor. It was a peaceful interlude, a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the region. We explored the streets and alleys, admiring the granite houses and soaking in the old-world charm. It felt like stepping back in time, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Afterward, we stopped for lunch at Monte Estrela. The restaurant offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains, a perfect backdrop for a delicious meal. I ordered the *cabrito assado* (roasted goat), a regional specialty, while Maximilian opted for the *bacalhau à brás* (codfish with scrambled eggs and potatoes). Astrid, as always, chose the *arroz de pato* (duck rice). The food was hearty and flavorful, a true taste of Serra da Estrela. As we ate, we reminisced about our adventures over the past week, the hikes we conquered, the views we admired, and the people we met. It was a bittersweet moment, knowing that our journey was coming to an end.

In the afternoon, we visited Nossa Senhora da Boa Estrela. This sanctuary, with its massive sculpture of the Virgin Mary carved into the rock, was a truly unique and spiritual experience. Astrid was fascinated by the statue, her eyes wide with wonder. We learned about the legend of the shepherds who discovered the image and began venerating her as the protector of their fields and flocks. It was a touching story, a reminder of the deep connection between the people and the land. The surrounding area was perfect for a family stroll, with gentle hikes and breathtaking landscapes. We took a moment to appreciate the beauty of nature, feeling grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. The statue itself is over 7 meters tall, and Astrid was very impressed by its size. She kept asking how they managed to carve it into the rock, which led to a nice conversation about the history of the region and the devotion of the shepherds.

Before dinner, we stopped at Recados da Montanha to pick up a few souvenirs. This charming shop offered a variety of artisanal products and local delicacies. I purchased a small bottle of olive oil and a bag of mountain tea, while Maximilian chose a bottle of local wine. Astrid, of course, picked out a stuffed sheep, a reminder of the region's pastoral heritage. It was a perfect way to support local artisans and bring a piece of Serra da Estrela back home with us.

Our final dinner was at Restaurante O Olival. This restaurant, known for its authentic Portuguese cuisine and warm ambiance, was the perfect setting for our farewell meal. I ordered the *cozido à portuguesa* (Portuguese stew), a hearty and flavorful dish, while Maximilian savored the *arroz de marisco* (seafood rice). Astrid, adventurous as ever, tried the *sopa da pedra* (stone soup), a traditional soup made with beans, vegetables, and various meats. The food was exceptional, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. The service was warm and attentive, making us feel like part of the family. As we dined, we shared stories and laughter, savoring the last moments of our family adventure. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

As I write this, sitting on the balcony of our hotel room, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude. Serra da Estrela has exceeded all my expectations, offering a blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and culinary delights. It's a destination that has something for everyone, a place where families can connect, explore, and create lasting memories. I'm so glad that we chose to spend our family vacation here, and I know that we'll be back again someday. Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Bamberg, filled with memories of our Portuguese adventure. I'm already looking forward to sharing our experiences with friends and family, inspiring them to explore this hidden gem of Portugal. And who knows, maybe our next adventure will be just around the corner.

As we prepare to leave, I'm reminded of a quote by Maya Angelou:

I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself.

And that's exactly how I felt in Serra da Estrela – at home. Until next time, *adeus*!
