A Day Among Emperors

Today, I immersed myself in Kyoto's rich history, wandering through serene shrines, majestic palaces, and tranquil gardens. It was a day of contrasts, from the vibrant colors of a Heian-era inspired shrine to the hushed reverence of an Imperial palace. I discovered hidden gems tucked away in bustling markets and quiet gardens, each offering a unique glimpse into the heart of this ancient city.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Ajikyu. I wanted to try a traditional Japanese morning meal, and this spot, recommended by a local, did not disappoint. It was a cozy, family-run place, tucked away on a quiet street, quite unassuming from the outside. I had a wonderful assortment of small dishes, including perfectly seasoned grilled fish, miso soup, and some of the best rice I've ever tasted. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring.

First on my itinerary was the Heian Shrine. As I approached, the massive torii gate, painted in a striking vermillion, immediately caught my eye. It's one of the largest in Japan, and passing beneath it felt like stepping into another world. The shrine itself, built in 1895 to commemorate Kyoto's 1100th anniversary as the capital, is a scaled-down replica of the original Imperial Palace from the Heian period. The architecture was stunning, with its vibrant colors and graceful lines. I learned that it is dedicated to Emperor Kammu and Emperor Komei, pivotal figures in Kyoto's history.

I took my time wandering through the spacious courtyard, admiring the Daigokuden (main hall) and the surrounding buildings. Although relatively new compared to Kyoto's many ancient temples, the Heian Shrine exuded a sense of history and grandeur. I spent some time in the gardens behind the main buildings. They were immaculately designed, with tranquil ponds, meticulously raked gravel, and carefully pruned trees. It was a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and reflect on the beauty of nature.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not only in its grand monuments but also in the quiet corners where history whispers and nature soothes.

Next, I made my way to the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the former residence of Japan's Imperial Family until 1868. The palace is located within the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, a vast and beautiful park in the center of the city. I decided to take a free guided tour of the palace grounds. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the Imperial Family and the significance of the various buildings within the complex. Although the buildings themselves cannot be entered, it was still impressive to see the grand halls and serene gardens where emperors once lived and ruled. The guide explained the architectural details, pointing out the unique blend of Chinese and Japanese influences. I learned that the enthronement ceremonies of Emperors Taisho and Showa were still held in the palace's main hall.

After the tour, I took a leisurely stroll through the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. It’s a vast green space that provides a welcome respite from the urban landscape. The park is home to a variety of gardens, historical sites, and recreational areas. It seems to be a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike. Despite the cold weather, it was lovely to walk around. I discovered a plum grove with around 200 plum trees. Although it was still early in the season, some of the trees were beginning to bloom, their delicate pink and white flowers adding a touch of color to the winter landscape. I continued my walk, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful scenery. I passed by the Kaninnomiya Mansion, a former residence of court nobles, and a small shrine on an island in a pond. I made a mental note to return in late March or early April to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

For lunch, I ventured to Khaos Spice Diner, drawn in by the promise of flavorful curry. It was a small, quirky restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. I opted for the three-curry plate, a generous serving of different curries with rice and pickles. Each curry had its own unique flavor profile, from the rich and savory pork keema to the spicy and aromatic chicken curry. It was a delicious and satisfying meal that warmed me from the inside out.

In the afternoon, I decided to do some shopping. I stumbled upon Noren by Corazon, a charming boutique that sells beautifully designed souvenirs. I was immediately drawn to the colorful noren (traditional Japanese fabric dividers) hanging in the doorway. Inside, I found a variety of unique and affordable gifts, from handcrafted paper lanterns to stylish ceramics. I picked up a few small items as souvenirs for my family and friends back in Germany. The shop assistant told me that the designs were inspired by the Gion Festival held every July in Kyoto.

As evening approached, I sought out a place to unwind. I ventured to The Roots of all evil, a gin and cocktail bar near Kyoto Station. It was a small, intimate space with a cozy atmosphere. I sampled one of their signature cocktails, the Roots, made with burdock and dandelion root-infused gin. It was an unusual but delicious drink, with earthy and herbal notes that perfectly complemented the gin. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable, and I enjoyed chatting with him about the different types of gin they offered. I learned that they have over 100 different types of craft gin from all across Japan and around the world. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Kyoto's historical and cultural treasures.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Yoshikawa, a renowned tempura restaurant. It was a truly special experience. The restaurant is located in a traditional Japanese building, and the atmosphere was elegant and refined. I opted for the tempura kaiseki course, a multi-course meal that showcased the chef's skill and creativity. Each piece of tempura was perfectly cooked, light and crispy, and bursting with flavor. I particularly enjoyed the kakiage, a mix of sliced vegetables and seafood that was deep-fried to perfection. I also got to try the tempura kakiage on rice with hot tea poured over it. I must admit that I was a bit hesitant about having tea poured over my tempura, but I was blown away! It was heavenly! I was told that the Yoshikawa is also known for its tempura kaiseki cuisine, where guests can learn more about the Japanese culture as they watch chefs cook their meals.

As I walked back to Gion Misen Furumonzen, I reflected on the day's adventures. I was grateful for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's rich history, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine. I am very much looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Nijō Castle, the Kyoto International Manga Museum, and The Flower Corridor. I am also excited to explore the Sanjo Meiten-gai Shopping Arcade and have a drink at the Turquoise Bar. It promises to be another day of discovery and wonder.
