A Day of Discovery in Kyoto

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Kyoto, a day filled with ancient wonders, historical insights, and the simple joys of exploring a city that effortlessly blends the old with the new. From the towering pagoda of Tō-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to the vibrant vermillion gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha, and the fascinating exhibits at the Kyoto Railway Museum, every moment was a new discovery. And of course, no day is complete without savoring the local flavors and seeking out unique treasures.

My Sunday began with a delightful breakfast at ryu no hige. It was a charming start to the day, offering a taste of Kyoto's culinary creativity. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, which included grilled fish, miso soup, and an array of small, flavorful side dishes. The presentation was as meticulous as the taste was satisfying, setting a high bar for the day's gastronomic adventures.

My first stop was Tō-ji Temple, officially named Kyoogokoku-ji, an ancient temple founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai in the early Heian period. As I approached, the sheer scale of the five-story pagoda took my breath away. Standing at 55 meters, it's the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan, a testament to the architectural prowess of the past. Although the interior wasn't open to the public, its majestic presence was captivating. I spent a good hour wandering the grounds, admiring the Kondo Hall and Kodo Hall, each holding centuries of history within their walls. The temple gardens, though still showing signs of winter, offered a serene escape. I could only imagine how beautiful they would be in the spring, with the cherry blossoms in full bloom. There's something profoundly calming about these ancient spaces, a sense of continuity that transcends time.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its famous landmarks, but in the quiet moments of reflection found within its ancient spaces.

Next on my itinerary was Fushimi Inari Taisha. The seemingly endless path of vermillion torii gates snaking up the mountain was an awe-inspiring sight. Each gate, donated by individuals and businesses, is a symbol of gratitude and hope. I began my ascent, joining the throng of visitors eager to experience this iconic landmark. The higher I climbed, the fewer people I encountered, and the more the atmosphere shifted from bustling to tranquil. The views overlooking Kyoto were breathtaking, and the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit was palpable. Along the way, I stopped at several small shrines and stalls, each offering a unique glimpse into local beliefs and traditions. While plum blossoms are starting to bloom, it is still too early for the cherry blossoms.

After immersing myself in the spiritual ambiance of Fushimi Inari, I headed to the Kyoto Railway Museum. As someone who appreciates the blend of history and engineering, I was excited to explore Japan's railway heritage. The museum is home to an impressive collection of locomotives, Shinkansen bullet trains, and historic railway cars. I particularly enjoyed the interactive exhibits that allowed me to experience what it was like to operate a train. There was even a Shinkansen simulator, which was incredibly fun. The museum also highlighted the technical innovations of Japan's railways, showcasing the nation's pride in its railway system. It was fascinating to see the evolution of train technology over the decades.

Lunch was at Masayoshi Japanese Dining, where I savored a delicious and artfully prepared meal. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot to relax and recharge after a busy morning. I opted for a set lunch that included a variety of small dishes, each showcasing the chef's skill and creativity. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a true culinary delight.

In the late afternoon, I indulged in some antique shopping at Maiko Antiques Kyoto. This charming shop is a treasure trove of vintage ceramics, textiles, and furniture, each with its own story to tell. I spent hours browsing the eclectic collection, admiring the craftsmanship and history behind each piece. The owner was incredibly knowledgeable and shared fascinating insights about the origins and significance of various items. I ended up purchasing a small, hand-painted porcelain teacup as a memento of my visit. It's these small, unique finds that make traveling so rewarding.

As evening approached, I found myself at Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki & Teppan-yaki Kamehameha for dinner. Okonomiyaki is a savory pancake dish that's a popular regional specialty. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I watched as the chef expertly prepared my okonomiyaki on a teppan grill, layering the ingredients with precision and flair. The result was a delicious and satisfying meal that perfectly captured the essence of Hiroshima cuisine. It was a fun and interactive dining experience that I won't soon forget.

My day concluded with a relaxing drink at Bar Rinto. This cozy bar offered a wide selection of cocktails and spirits, as well as a warm and inviting atmosphere. I settled into a comfortable seat and sipped on a local craft beer, reflecting on the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to unwind and soak in the ambiance of Kyoto's nightlife.

As I walked back to Gion Misen Furumonzen, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's cultural richness. Each attraction, meal, and encounter had added a new layer to my understanding and appreciation of this remarkable city. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit the Kyoto International Manga Museum, Nishijin Textile Center, and perhaps catch a performance at the Kyoto Theater. Before that, I'll make sure to grab breakfast at Fujiya, lunch at Nakamura and dinner at Sakuragawa, as well as visit Kyoto Yaoichi Honkan and Bar Dram.

This solo journey has been incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to immerse myself fully in the local culture and discover hidden gems at my own pace. I’m also starting to think about how I can incorporate some elements of Japanese design and philosophy into my own home in Bamberg. Perhaps a small Zen garden or a minimalist tea set. Small reminders of this incredible journey. And I really need to remember to buy a raincoat, since the weather is still unpredictable in early March!

Until tomorrow!
