Chasing Waterfalls and Mountain Views

Today was all about embracing the natural beauty and spiritual serenity that Chefchaouen has to offer. I ventured beyond the blue-washed alleys to discover the source of the town’s life and climbed to a vantage point that offered breathtaking views. It was a day of simple pleasures and profound reflections, perfectly embodying the solo travel experience I was seeking.

The weather in Chefchaouen in October is quite pleasant, with comfortable temperatures ranging from 62°F to 84°F. I started my day with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Al Wiam. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen (buttery flatbreads) with honey and a pot of mint tea. The warm, sweet flavors were the perfect start to a day of exploration. Fueled and ready, I set off to my first destination: Ras El Ma.

Ras El Ma, which translates to Head of the Water in Arabic, is a natural spring located on the eastern edge of the city. It’s a short, pleasant walk from the medina, and the sound of rushing water grows louder as you approach. The spring is where fresh mountain water flows into the town, creating a small cascade and a refreshing oasis. It's not a majestic waterfall, but rather a series of small cascades flowing over stone ledges.

Arriving at Ras El Ma, I was immediately struck by the lively atmosphere. Locals were gathered around the spring, some washing clothes, others simply enjoying the cool water. Children played nearby, their laughter echoing through the air. I took some time to simply sit by the water, observing the daily life of the town and feeling a sense of connection to the community. I captured a few photos, trying to capture the essence of this vibrant gathering place.

The simple act of observing daily life at Ras El Ma offered a profound connection to the heart of Chefchaouen, reminding me that travel is often about experiencing the ordinary in extraordinary settings.

After soaking in the atmosphere at Ras El Ma, I decided to embark on the trek to Bouzafer Mosque. Perched on a hill overlooking Chefchaouen, the mosque offers panoramic views of the blue city and the surrounding Rif Mountains. The walk from Ras El Ma to the Bouzafer Mosque was a bit of a climb, but the views along the way were worth every step. The path wound through the outskirts of the town, offering glimpses of local life and the stunning landscape. The Bouzafer Mosque was built in the 15th century.

As I ascended, I couldn't help but reflect on my life back in Bamberg. Maximilian and Astrid were probably enjoying a cozy Saturday afternoon. I missed them dearly, but I also cherished these moments of solo exploration. It’s a chance to reconnect with myself and gain new perspectives that I can bring back home.

Reaching the Bouzafer Mosque, I was rewarded with a breathtaking vista. The entire blue city stretched out before me, a sea of indigo and azure nestled against the backdrop of the rugged mountains. The mosque itself is no longer in use, but it stands as a peaceful retreat, a place for quiet contemplation. I found a quiet spot to sit and simply absorb the beauty around me. The sun was beginning to dip towards the horizon, casting a golden glow over the city.

I spent a long time at the mosque, watching the sunset paint the sky with vibrant colors. It was a truly magical experience, a moment of serenity and awe that I will never forget. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning views made it the perfect place to reflect on my journey so far.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, I made my way back down the hill, the blue city twinkling below. I decided to treat myself to dinner at Sofia restaurant. I had a delightful meal. Sofia offers a few vegan options. I chose the vegetable tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices.

After dinner, I decided to check out Bar Oum Rabie. I enjoyed a glass of Moroccan wine while soaking in the atmosphere. It was a relaxing end to a day filled with exploration and reflection.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to venture further into the Rif Mountains to visit Parc National de Talassemtane and the Waterfalls Akchour. I’ve heard they are absolutely stunning, and I’m looking forward to immersing myself in the natural beauty of the region. I’ll also make a stop at B & H Art Shop.

As I write this, back in the cozy confines of Hotel Barcelona, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of today. Chefchaouen continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It’s a place where the simple things in life – a refreshing spring, a stunning view, a warm meal – can bring immense joy and a profound sense of connection.

I'm starting to feel like I am really connecting with this town, and the people here are so warm and welcoming. It reminds me a bit of Eksjö, where I grew up. Perhaps that's why I feel so at home here.

Until tomorrow's adventures!
