A Day of Serenity and Discovery

As our journey through Japan nears its end, today was dedicated to soaking in the cultural heart of Kanazawa. With Hans-Peter by my side, I anticipated a day filled with serene shrines, historic tea houses, and the unforgettable flavors of local cuisine. It's a bittersweet feeling, knowing our adventure is drawing to a close, but I am determined to make the most of every moment.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hiiragi. I had read mixed reviews, with some suggesting a branch in Shirakawa-go known for Hida beef. However, our experience was delightful. The restaurant had a warm, inviting atmosphere, perfect for starting the day. We enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It was the ideal fuel for a day of exploring. I must admit that I felt a pang of nostalgia as I savored the comforting flavors. It reminded me of breakfasts back home in Berlin, albeit with a Japanese twist.

Our first stop was Ishiura Shrine, known as the oldest shrine in Kanazawa. As we approached, the vibrant vermillion torii gates stood out against the lush greenery. The shrine was smaller than I had imagined, but it had a lively atmosphere. Many visitors were there to admire Kima-chan, the shrine's adorable dog mascot. I learned that the shrine is popular among women seeking blessings for finding their soulmates. Although Hans-Peter and I have already found each other, we appreciated the peaceful ambiance and the beautiful details of the shrine. We picked up a couple of polka-dot patterned charms, symbolizing 'all is well'. It's a lovely reminder of our journey together. I was particularly moved by the sight of a young couple praying together, their faces filled with hope and devotion. It reminded me of our own early days, filled with dreams and aspirations.

The beauty of a journey lies not only in the destinations we reach, but also in the moments we collect along the way.

Next, we ventured into the Nishi Chaya District, one of Kanazawa's three well-preserved geisha districts. This area, smaller and quieter than the Higashi Chaya District, exuded a charming, old-world atmosphere. As we strolled along the main street, lined with traditional wooden tea houses, I could almost hear the echoes of shamisen music from a bygone era. Many of these buildings now house sweet shops and cafes, blending the past with the present. We visited the Nishi Chaya Shiryokan Museum, a former tea house that offered a glimpse into the lives of geiko (Kanazawa's term for geisha). The well-appointed rooms and historical displays provided a fascinating insight into this unique aspect of Japanese culture. I was particularly intrigued by the intricate details of the tea ceremony room, imagining the elegant geishas entertaining their guests with grace and artistry.

For lunch, we chose Arai, a sushi restaurant known for its market-fresh fish. Despite some confusion—there appears to be another Arai in Shirakawa —we were not disappointed. Chef Arai's dedication to sourcing the best ingredients was evident in every bite. The nigiri sushi, prepared with akazu red vinegar rice, was simply divine. I appreciated the chef's commitment to classic sushi-making techniques, focusing on the quality of the fish rather than flashy presentations. Hans-Peter, a man of simple tastes, declared it the best sushi he had ever tasted. I think the freshness and quality of the fish, combined with the skillful preparation, truly made it a memorable meal.

After lunch, we indulged in some shopping at Oishinbo. I was initially drawn to the name, as it reminded me of the popular manga series about Japanese cuisine. While I didn't find any manga, the shop offered a delightful array of local crafts and delicacies. We picked up some beautifully packaged Kanazawa sweets, perfect for gifts back home. I also found a charming tea set, adorned with delicate floral patterns, which I couldn't resist adding to my collection.

Our final dinner in Shirakawa-go was at Tenshukaku, a restaurant offering stunning views of the Gassho-zukuri village. The restaurant specialized in Teishoku, set meals that included rice, miso soup, and seasonal side dishes. We savored the flavors of the region as we looked out over the picturesque landscape. The serene environment added to the experience, creating a perfect ending to our day. As we enjoyed our meal, I couldn't help but reflect on our incredible journey through Japan. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the tranquil beauty of Shirakawa-go, we had experienced so much in the past two weeks. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this fascinating country and to share these moments with Hans-Peter.

As we prepare to leave tomorrow, I am filled with a mix of emotions. I am sad to say goodbye to Japan, but I am also excited to return home and share our adventures with friends and family. I know that the memories we have made here will stay with us for a lifetime. Until next time, Japan!

Tomorrow marks the end of our journey. We will be making our way back to Berlin, carrying with us a treasure trove of memories and experiences. I am already looking forward to sharing these stories with you all, and perhaps inspiring you to embark on your own adventure. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey!
