Day 10: Spiritual Heights and Waterfalls: A Day of Serenity Near Ponte de Lima
Discover the breathtaking Santuario de Nossa Senhora da Peneda and the refreshing Cascata de Cela Cavalos on a serene day trip.
A Journey to the Soul and Nature's Embrace
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of spiritual reflection and the raw beauty of nature. Hans-Peter and I ventured beyond Ponte de Lima, seeking both the serenity of a mountaintop sanctuary and the invigorating rush of a hidden waterfall. It was a day that reminded me of the profound peace one can find in both the man-made and the natural wonders around us.
Our day began, as many do, with a simple breakfast at Restaurante Astro. The aroma of strong Portuguese coffee filled the air, a comforting start before our explorations. With a quick glance at our guidebook, and a mental note to finally acquire that phrasebook we'd forgotten, we set off towards our first destination: the Santuario de Nossa Senhora da Peneda.

The drive itself was a treat, the landscape unfolding before us in a tapestry of autumnal hues. As we climbed higher into the mountains, the air grew crisp and the views became increasingly dramatic. It was easy to see why this region is so revered; the natural beauty is simply breathtaking. I couldn't help but reflect on how different this landscape is from the familiar forests of Latvia, yet both hold a special place in my heart. Perhaps it's the shared sense of history, the feeling of being connected to something ancient and enduring, that resonates so deeply within me.
Arriving at the Santuario de Nossa Senhora da Peneda, I was immediately struck by its imposing presence. The sanctuary, nestled high in the mountains, exudes a sense of peace and reverence. The architecture, a blend of 18th and 19th-century styles, is impressive, but it's the setting that truly captivates. The massive rock formations surrounding the sanctuary create a dramatic backdrop, as if nature itself is protecting this sacred space.
We began our exploration at the base of the staircase, known as the Escadório das Virtudes, with its statues representing Faith, Hope, Charity, and Glory. Each step we climbed offered a new perspective, both literally and figuratively. The intricate details of the statues, the way the light played across the stone, and the sheer height of the staircase all contributed to a sense of awe. I paused to catch my breath, not just from the climb but from the profound sense of history and devotion that permeated the air.
As we ascended, we passed a series of chapels, each depicting scenes from the life of Christ. One chapel even had an inscription noting it was a gift from the Negus of Ethiopia. The blend of cultures and the dedication to faith were palpable. Reaching the church at the top, we stepped inside, the cool, quiet interior offering a respite from the sun. The sculptures inside were different from what I am used to seeing in Portugal, depicting biblical scenes.
Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that lead us to both the divine and the earthly wonders of our world.
After taking some time for quiet contemplation, we descended the staircase, our thoughts filled with the serenity of the sanctuary. It was time to immerse ourselves in another kind of wonder: the Cascata de Cela Cavalos.

The drive to the waterfall took us through winding mountain roads, the scenery growing wilder with each turn. We eventually arrived at the trailhead and embarked on a short but invigorating hike. The path was well-worn, but the terrain was uneven, requiring careful footing. The anticipation of seeing the waterfall spurred us onward, and soon we could hear the sound of rushing water.
Finally, we reached the Cascata de Cela Cavalos, and it was even more impressive than we had imagined. The water cascaded down the rocks, forming a small, inviting pool at its base. The surrounding landscape was lush and green, a perfect oasis of tranquility. I could see why it's considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Peneda-Gerês National Park.
I dipped my toes into the cool water, feeling the invigorating rush against my skin. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the mechanics of the waterfall, marveling at the way the water had carved its path through the rock over centuries. We spent some time simply enjoying the scene, listening to the sounds of nature, and breathing in the fresh, clean air. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect counterpoint to the spiritual heights we had reached earlier in the day.
As the afternoon drew to a close, we made our way back to Ponte de Lima, our bodies tired but our spirits refreshed. Before dinner, we stopped at baggu's wine bar, a cozy spot where we enjoyed a glass of local wine.

The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration. I savored the taste of the wine, reflecting on the day's experiences.
For dinner, we chose O Porão Limiano, a restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine.

The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and spectacular decor. I opted for the bacalhau com migas (codfish with breadcrumbs), a hearty and flavorful dish that perfectly captured the essence of the region. Hans-Peter chose a meat dish, which he declared to be equally delicious. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore Solar de Bertiandos and Igreja da Misericórdia de Ponte de Lima. We'll also stop by Laurindinha (Creative Gift Shop) for some souvenirs.
As I write this, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. From the spiritual heights of the Santuario de Nossa Senhora da Peneda to the invigorating waters of the Cascata de Cela Cavalos, today was a journey for both the soul and the senses. It was a reminder that the world is full of wonders, both big and small, waiting to be discovered. And it was a reminder of the importance of taking the time to appreciate the beauty around us, whether it's a grand sanctuary or a simple glass of wine shared with a loved one.
