Chasing Waterfalls and History in Húsavík
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the raw power of Iceland's nature with the quiet reverence of its history. Hans-Peter and I set out to explore a couple of gems northeast of Húsavík, and I couldn't wait to share our experiences with you all. While I sometimes miss the structured order of my work at the Deutsches Historisches Museum, these unplanned adventures are starting to become my new favorite thing.
Our first stop was the Hafragilsfoss viewpoint, deep within the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon [i, 15]. The drive itself was an adventure, a bumpy ride on Route 864, a gravel road that tested the suspension of our rental car. As we bounced along, I couldn't help but think of my childhood summers in Latvia, navigating similar roads to reach hidden lakes and forests. It's funny how certain experiences can transport you back in time.
Finally, we arrived at the viewpoint, and the sight that greeted us was simply breathtaking. Hafragilsfoss is a massive waterfall, not as famous as its neighbor Dettifoss, but no less impressive. The water thundered down into the canyon below, a দৃশ্য of untamed power and raw beauty. The canyon itself, Jökulsárgljúfur, stretched out before us, a testament to the forces that have shaped this land over millennia. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, but some things simply cannot be translated into a photograph. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the engineering of it all, discussing the sheer volume of water and the geological processes at play.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
After soaking in the majesty of Hafragilsfoss, we drove towards the Lava Church, also known as the Church of Our Lady of the Lava. This small church in the village of Piton Sainte-Rose has a fascinating story. Back in 1977, a volcanic eruption threatened to engulf the entire village. The lava flowed towards the church, but, according to local legend, stopped right at its doorstep, sparing the building from destruction. Scientists, of course, have a more rational explanation, but the legend persists, adding to the church's mystique.
As we approached the Lava Church, the sight was striking. The church, painted in pastel colors, stood in stark contrast to the black lava rocks surrounding it. It was as if the church was an island in a sea of volcanic rock. We walked around the building, examining the hardened lava that still clung to its walls, a reminder of the forces that had threatened to consume it. Inside, the church was simple but beautiful, with stained glass windows depicting the eruption. I lit a candle and said a quiet prayer, thinking of all the people who had sought solace in this place over the years. Hans-Peter, meanwhile, was examining the architecture, marveling at how the building had withstood the eruption.

Before heading out for dinner, we decided to stop by Lókal Bistro for a quick drink. It was a cozy little place, and we enjoyed some tasty crepes and coffee. The staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was just what we needed after a day of exploring.
For dinner, we had reservations at Salka Restaurant, a charming spot by the harbor. The restaurant is housed in one of the town's oldest buildings, dating back to 1883. The ambiance was cozy and welcoming, with a beautiful view of the harbor. We started with some garlic bread, grilled to perfection. For the main course, I had the Arctic char, while Hans-Peter opted for the fish of the day. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The service was outstanding, warm and attentive.
After dinner, we decided to check out Lókal Bistro again, this time for a nightcap. It was a lively spot, and we enjoyed some local drinks before heading back to the Fosshotel for the night. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

Today’s meals were a delightful dive into Icelandic cuisine. Breakfast at Jaja Ding Dong Húsavík, which was conveniently located, offered tasty pizzas and focaccia. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was homey. For lunch, we stopped at Hérna, a cozy café with a charming owner. I enjoyed a delicious mushroom soup and a sandwich. It was a perfect spot for a light and satisfying lunch.
As I sit here in our room at the Fosshotel Husavik, reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of this remarkable island. Gratitude for the companionship of my dear Hans-Peter, who always brings a sense of groundedness to my wanderings. And gratitude for you, dear readers, who allow me to share my experiences with you.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Eyjafjörður and visit the GeoSea geothermal sea baths. I've heard wonderful things about the views from Eyjafjörður, and I'm looking forward to soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters of GeoSea. Before that, we will have breakfast at Heimabakarí. For lunch, we are thinking of visiting the Húsavík Whale Museum. And for dinner, we will be dining at Gamli Baukur. I am also planning to visit Penninn Eymundsson. I have a feeling it will be another day filled with wonder and discovery.
Until then, takk fyrir and good night.
