Day 2: A Whale of a Day in Húsavík: Discovering Iceland's Gentle Giants
Experience the magic of Húsavík with whale watching at North Sailing, local flavors at Heimabakarí & Naustið, and shopping at Ísfell.
Chasing Whales in Iceland's Whale Watching Capital
Today was everything I imagined and more. Húsavík, living up to its reputation as the whale watching capital, offered us an unforgettable journey into the world of these magnificent creatures. The day was a blend of natural wonders, delightful tastes, and charming local discoveries – a perfect reflection of Iceland's unique allure.
The day began with the aroma of freshly baked goods at Heimabakarí. Hans-Peter and I decided to start our morning with a traditional Icelandic breakfast. This cozy bakery, tucked away on a colorful street, was the perfect spot to fuel up for our adventure. I chose a cinnamon roll, still warm from the oven, while Hans-Peter went for a hearty sandwich. The staff was incredibly kind, offering us tips on local attractions and sharing stories about Húsavík's history. It reminded me of the small bakeries back in Cēsis, where the sense of community was as rich as the pastries themselves. It’s these simple, authentic experiences that truly enrich a journey. I must admit, I felt a pang of guilt not bringing along the sunglasses I had forgotten, as the sun was already shining brightly.
With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to Húsavík Harbor, eager for our whale watching tour with North Sailing - Húsavík Whale Watching. The harbor was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all drawn by the promise of encountering these gentle giants. As an archivist, I appreciate the historical significance of places, and Húsavík Harbor is steeped in maritime history, dating back to the Viking Age. The name Húsavík itself means bay of houses, a testament to its early days as a sheltered harbor for Norse seafarers.

North Sailing came highly recommended, known for their eco-conscious approach and knowledgeable crew. We chose them not only for their reputation but also for their pioneering work in carbon-neutral whale watching tours. As we boarded the boat, we were greeted by the friendly crew and given warm overalls to protect us from the chilly sea air. It was a thoughtful touch that ensured our comfort throughout the journey. Despite the sun, the wind was biting, and I was grateful for the extra layer, though I secretly wished I hadn't forgotten my waterproof boots. I made a mental note to buy a pair if I found the time.
As we set out into Skjálfandi Bay, the anticipation was palpable. The guide, a marine biologist with a clear passion for her work, shared fascinating insights about the whales and their environment. She explained that the waters around Húsavík are home to several species of cetaceans, including humpback whales, minke whales, and even the occasional blue whale. We learned about their feeding habits, migration patterns, and the importance of protecting their habitat. It was an educational experience that deepened our appreciation for these magnificent creatures.
And then, the moment we had been waiting for – a humpback whale breached the surface, its massive body arcing gracefully before disappearing back into the depths. A collective gasp went through the boat as everyone scrambled to capture the sight. It was a truly awe-inspiring moment, a reminder of the raw power and beauty of nature. Over the next few hours, we were treated to several more sightings, each one as thrilling as the last. We saw minke whales gliding through the water, their sleek bodies barely breaking the surface, and white-beaked dolphins leaping and playing in the waves. It was a symphony of marine life, a testament to the richness of this Arctic ecosystem.
Back on solid ground, with the salty tang of the sea still in the air, we decided to explore more of Húsavík. The town itself is charming, with colorful houses and a friendly atmosphere. After our whale watching tour, we strolled along the Húsavík Harbor, watching the fishing boats come and go. Húsavík has been a fishing village since the late 19th century, and its maritime heritage is still evident today. The harbor is the heart of the town, a place where locals and tourists alike gather to enjoy the stunning views and soak in the atmosphere. We even caught a glimpse of the iconic wooden church, Husavikurkirkja, a symbol of the town.
For lunch and dinner, we indulged in the local flavors at Naustið, a family-run restaurant known for its fresh seafood. The cozy interior, adorned with nautical-themed decor, created an inviting atmosphere. We started with the fish soup, a hearty and flavorful concoction that warmed us from the inside out. For our main courses, I opted for the Arctic char, while Hans-Peter chose the grilled catfish. Each dish was expertly prepared, highlighting the natural flavors of the ingredients. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying the delicious food and friendly service. It felt like a true taste of Iceland, a culinary experience that we would not soon forget.

Before heading back to the Fosshotel Husavik, we stopped at Ísfell verslun - Húsavík, a local clothing store. I was hoping to find a pair of waterproof boots, but I ended up being captivated by the selection of Icelandic wool sweaters. The store had a wide array of clothing options, reflecting both modern and traditional Icelandic styles. I ended up buying a cozy sweater for myself and a warm hat for Hans-Peter. It was the perfect way to remember our day in Húsavík, a tangible reminder of the town's unique charm and the warmth of its people. I was impressed with the range of items available, from practical outerwear to beautifully crafted souvenirs.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our incredible experiences. Húsavík had exceeded our expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and warm hospitality. The whale watching tour was undoubtedly the highlight, a humbling encounter with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. But it was the combination of all the day’s activities – the delicious food, the charming town, and the friendly people – that truly made it special. As we prepare for our trip to Ásbyrgi tomorrow, I feel grateful for the experiences Húsavík gave us. I am also looking forward to exploring the legendary, horseshoe-shaped canyon and visitor center.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Ásbyrgi, a legendary, horseshoe-shaped canyon said to be the Shelter of the Gods in Norse mythology. I'm particularly excited to visit the Gljúfrastofa - Ásbyrgi Visitor Centre, where I hope to learn more about the canyon's geological and cultural significance. We'll start our day with breakfast at Lókal Bistro, followed by lunch at Fish and Chips, and dinner at Húsavík öll. I also plan to visit the House of Arts and Handcrafts, hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring back home. As always, I'll be sure to document our adventures and share them with you all. Until then, takk fyrir Húsavík – thank you for the memories.
