Family Adventure in the Historic Town of Røros
Day 5: Chasing Waterfalls and Heritage: A Day of Exploration in Røros
Discover the beauty of Eidfossen Waterfall and the history of Oddentunet in Røros. A day of nature, culture, and local charm.
A Day of Nature and Nostalgia
Today was a delightful blend of natural beauty and historical immersion here in Røros. Maximilian, Clara and I set out to explore beyond the charming town center, eager to uncover more of what this region has to offer. It turned out to be a day filled with stunning landscapes and fascinating glimpses into Norway's past.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Erzscheidergården. I always appreciate a hotel that includes breakfast, especially when it's homemade. Erzscheidergården delivered with a lovely spread. I enjoyed some freshly baked bread and local cheese, while Maximilian savored the traditional Norwegian waffles. Clara, of course, went straight for the jam. It’s these small, comforting moments that make traveling as a family so special. I even packed a lunchbox for later, knowing our adventures would keep us busy.
Eidfossen Wasserfall: A Symphony of Water
After breakfast, we hopped in our rental car and drove to Eidfossen Wasserfall. The drive itself was picturesque, with rolling hills and lush greenery. As we approached the waterfall, we could hear the thunderous roar of the water, which grew louder as we got closer. Eidfossen is truly a sight to behold. The cascading water plummets down 32 meters, creating a mesmerizing display of nature's power. The mist rising from the falls gave the air a refreshing coolness, a welcome change from the warm June sun.

We walked along the designated paths, taking in different vantage points of the waterfall. I was particularly impressed by the salmon ladder, one of the longest in the world, stretching 230 meters. Imagine the determination of those salmon! Clara was fascinated by the rushing water, pointing and giggling as droplets landed on her face. Maximilian, ever the photographer, was busy capturing the scene from every angle. I managed to snap a few photos myself, though nothing truly captures the feeling of being there. The area is known for its salmon fishing, and I could see why. The clear, rushing water seemed like an ideal habitat.
Sometimes, the most enriching travel experiences come from simply being present and allowing yourself to be swept away by the beauty of your surroundings.
Lunch at Grillhuset Håndverk
By lunchtime, we were all quite hungry, so we drove back towards Røros and stopped at Grillhuset Håndverk for lunch. It seems that Grillhuset Håndverk recently closed, and a new restaurant called Røros Burgers and Beers has opened in its place. We decided to give it a try, and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere was casual and inviting, perfect for a family meal. Maximilian and I both ordered burgers, which were juicy and flavorful, made with local beef. Clara enjoyed a simple but delicious taco. It was a satisfying meal that gave us the energy we needed for our next adventure. It seems that they focus on serving the locals, which I always appreciate. It's a good sign when a restaurant caters to the community.
Stepping Back in Time at Oddentunet
Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring Oddentunet, a cultural treasure that offers a glimpse into Norway's rural history. Located in the scenic region of Østerdalen, this museum is composed of meticulously restored historical buildings. As we walked through the grounds, we were transported back in time, imagining what life was like for the people who once lived here.

Each building told a story, from the traditional farmhouses to the workshops filled with antique tools. The knowledgeable staff shared fascinating anecdotes about the artifacts and the people who used them. Clara was particularly intrigued by the old kitchen, with its cast-iron stove and array of utensils. She peppered the guide with questions, eager to learn about how people cooked and lived in the past. Maximilian and I appreciated the attention to detail in the restoration of the buildings, preserving the architectural styles and living conditions of different eras.
I found myself reflecting on my own upbringing in Ísafjörður, surrounded by Iceland's dramatic landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Visiting Oddentunet reinforced the importance of preserving these historical treasures for future generations. It's a reminder of where we come from and the values that have shaped our societies.
A Candlelit Souvenir
Before heading back to the hotel, we stopped by Støperiet Røros, a charming candle store in the heart of town. The shop was filled with beautifully crafted candles, each one unique in its design and color. The warm glow of the candles and the inviting scent of wax created a delightful atmosphere. I picked out a few candles as souvenirs, one for my mother and one for our home in Dresden. I appreciate supporting local artisans, and these candles seemed like the perfect way to bring a piece of Røros back with us. I learned that the shop opened in November 2023, so it's relatively new to the town. It's wonderful to see new businesses adding to the charm of Røros.

Dinner at Tufta Kro
For dinner, we decided to try Tufta Kro. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic ambiance, which was very inviting after a long day of exploring. We were all quite hungry, so we ordered a variety of dishes to share. Maximilian tried the reindeer stew, a local specialty, while I opted for the grilled salmon. Clara, as always, was happy with her simple pasta dish. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end our day.

As we walked back to our hotel, the sky was ablaze with the colors of the setting sun. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the gentle murmur of the river. I felt a deep sense of contentment, grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family.
Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the history of Røros by visiting the Pressemuseet Fjeld-Ljom and Rørosmuseet Bygningsvernsenteret. We'll also treat ourselves to breakfast at Trygstad bakery and confectionery. In the evening, we might unwind with a drink at Skanckebua Bar & Restaurant. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery in this enchanting town. Until then, takk for i dag!
P.S. I almost forgot to mention! I realized I had forgotten an adapter for the Norwegian electrical outlets. Luckily, the hotel had one available for us to borrow. It's always something, isn't it? But that's part of the adventure, right? It's a reminder that even the most organized travelers can forget something, and it's how we adapt that makes the journey memorable.
