Today was a day of delightful surprises, proving that Røros has so much more to offer than just its historical mining sites. We traded our pickaxes for swimsuits and sand shovels, venturing into landscapes I never imagined existed in this part of Norway. It's amazing how a change of scenery can completely shift your perspective on a place.

Our day began, as it often does, with a hearty breakfast at Bakeriet på Røros. The aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries filled the air, setting a cozy tone for the adventures ahead. Clara, of course, opted for her usual cinnamon bun, while Maximilian and I enjoyed some traditional Norwegian rolls with cheese and Røros butter. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore!

Our first stop was Kvitsanden landskapsvernområde, a landscape reserve that feels like stepping into a miniature desert. Who knew that just a short distance from the charming wooden buildings of Røros, you could find one of Norway's largest inland sand dune systems? It was surreal. The landscape was formed at the end of the last Ice Age, and has continued to shift and change. As we walked through the dunes, the fine sand crunched beneath our feet, and the wind whispered tales of ancient times. Clara was immediately captivated, running up and down the dunes with boundless energy. Maximilian, ever the photographer, found himself mesmerized by the play of light and shadow on the undulating sand. I felt like I was back in Iceland, wandering through the black sand beaches of my homeland, only this time surrounded by golden dunes instead of volcanic shores. We even spotted some unique insects that thrive in this sandy habitat, a testament to the area's diverse ecosystem.

After our sandy escapade, we were ready for a change of pace. We headed to Badebrygge - Røros IL, a lovely bathing spot by the lake. The sun was shining, and the water looked incredibly inviting. Clara was thrilled at the prospect of swimming, and Maximilian, despite his initial hesitation, was soon splashing around with her in the refreshing water. I decided to join them, and we spent a blissful hour swimming and playing by the lake. It was the perfect way to cool off after our desert adventure. Apparently, the Badebrygge was built by students from Røros Videregående skole, which I thought was a great initiative!

Lunchtime rolled around, and we decided to try Freddy's Diner. The American-style diner was a fun and quirky contrast to the traditional Norwegian surroundings. We ordered burgers, fries, and milkshakes, all of which were delicious and satisfying. Clara especially loved her kid's meal, and Maximilian couldn't resist trying a bite of my milkshake. It was a welcome change of pace, and we left feeling full and content.

As evening approached, we strolled back towards the town center, our stomachs rumbling once more. For dinner, we had reservations at Bari restaurant Røros. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the menu featured a mix of Italian and Norwegian dishes. We started with a selection of appetizers, including some local cheeses and cured meats. For our main courses, Maximilian opted for a reindeer dish, while Clara and I shared a delicious pizza. The food was excellent, and the service was attentive and friendly.

To cap off our day, we decided to check out Berkel og Bar, a gastropub known for its local beers and cozy atmosphere. Maximilian, being the beer enthusiast in the family, was eager to sample some of the local brews. The bar had a rustic charm, with wooden beams and dim lighting. We ordered a couple of beers and settled into a corner, enjoying the lively ambiance. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day filled with adventure. I stuck to a glass of wine, reminiscing about our Icelandic roots and how much this trip was reminding me of home, in unexpected ways. Maximilian enjoyed the local beers, and we shared some stories and laughter before heading back to Vertshuset Røros.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but smile at the unexpected turns our day took. It's a reminder that sometimes the best travel experiences come from venturing off the beaten path and embracing the unexpected. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Mølmannsdalen and Quintushøgda, continuing our journey through the natural wonders of Røros. I am looking forward to seeing what new adventures await us!

Before drifting off to sleep, I thought about how lucky I am to share these experiences with my family. Traveling with Maximilian and Clara always brings a unique perspective to each adventure. Maximilian's love for photography and Clara's infectious enthusiasm make every day special. As I closed my eyes, I felt grateful for the memories we were creating together, one sandy dune and one refreshing swim at a time. It is these shared moments that make our family trips so unforgettable, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

I also realized that I forgot to pack an adapter for the Norwegian electrical outlets. I'll have to remember to buy one tomorrow, or else my camera and phone will be out of commission. And maybe I should pick up some of Clara's favorite snacks for the train journey back to Oslo; it'll make the trip a bit more comfortable for her.
