A Day Among Lava Castles and Hidden Springs

The Myvatn region of Iceland continues to surprise me with its raw, otherworldly beauty. Today was all about exploring the dramatic landscapes shaped by volcanic activity, venturing into areas that feel both ancient and incredibly alive. It's days like these that remind me why I crave solo travel – the freedom to lose myself in the moment, to linger where my curiosity is piqued, and to truly connect with the environment.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kvika Kaffi. It was conveniently located, and I needed something to fuel up before a day of exploring. I opted for a simple but satisfying meal of smoked trout on rye bread, paired with a strong coffee to kickstart my morning. The cafe was cozy, and it was a great way to start the day.

Wandering Through Dimmuborgir's Dark Fortress

My first stop was Dimmuborgir Lava Field, an area that translates to Dark Castles. The name is incredibly fitting. Imagine towering basalt pillars, bizarre rock formations, and hidden caves all intertwined to create a labyrinthine landscape. It felt like stepping onto the set of a fantasy film, and I half-expected to see elves or trolls peeking out from behind the rocks. Dimmuborgir was formed over 2,000 years ago by volcanic eruptions, and the interplay between lava and water created this unique geological marvel. I decided to take the Small Circle trail, a roughly one-kilometer path that offered a taste of the area's highlights.

As I walked, I was struck by the sheer scale of the lava formations. Some pillars reached incredible heights, forming natural arches and cave-like openings. The sunlight filtering through these structures created an ethereal glow, highlighting the moss and lichen clinging to the rocks. I spent hours wandering, snapping photos from every angle, and simply soaking in the surreal atmosphere. It was easy to see why this place is steeped in Icelandic folklore, with tales of mythical creatures and hidden realms woven into the very fabric of the landscape.

Sometimes, the most captivating journeys are those where you lose yourself in the landscape, letting your curiosity guide you through the unknown.

A Pizza Pit Stop

After exploring Dimmuborgir, I was ready for lunch. I headed to Daddi's Pizza, a local spot known for its delicious hand-tossed pizzas. I went for a large pizza, and it was more than enough for one person. The crust was perfectly crisp, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. Plus, the restaurant had a view of the Hverfjall Volcanic Crater. It was the perfect way to recharge before my next adventure.

Discovering the Secrets of Grjótagjá

Next on the agenda was Grjótagjá, a small lava cave famous for its appearance in Game of Thrones. As a fan of the series, I was eager to see this hidden gem in person. Getting there involved a short drive and a bit of a scramble down a rocky path, but the effort was well worth it. The cave itself is tucked away beneath a fissure in the earth, and stepping inside felt like entering a secret world.

Inside, crystal-clear geothermal water filled the cave, creating a mesmerizing blue pool. Although bathing is currently prohibited due to fluctuating water temperatures, the beauty of the cave was undeniable. The sunlight filtering through the opening illuminated the water, casting an ethereal glow on the surrounding rock formations. I could easily picture Jon Snow and Ygritte in this secluded spot, their love story unfolding against the backdrop of this stunning natural wonder. The air was still and quiet, adding to the sense of mystery and enchantment. I took some time to simply sit and absorb the atmosphere, feeling grateful for the chance to experience such a unique place.

Evening Reflections and Local Flavors

As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Gamli Bærinn, a cozy restaurant known for its traditional Icelandic cuisine. I opted for the fish of the day, which was perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. The restaurant had a warm, inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration, savoring local flavors and reflecting on the incredible sights I had seen.
