Discover Kyoto's serene beauty with visits to Heian Shrine, Philosopher's Path, and Nanzen-ji, indulging in local flavors along the way.
Finding Peace in Kyoto's Sacred Spaces
Today was a day of reflection and exploration as I delved deeper into Kyoto's spiritual heart. From grand shrines to tranquil paths and majestic temples, every corner held a new discovery. The essence of Kyoto, a blend of history, nature, and culinary delights, truly captivated me. Come along as I share my experiences from a day filled with serene moments and cultural immersion.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Khaos Spice Diner. It's always a treat to start the day with something flavorful, and their unique curry creations were just the ticket. I opted for their signature pork keema curry, while my friends tried the daily specials. The mix of Indian spices and Japanese dashi was comforting and flavorful, providing the perfect energy boost for a day of exploring.
A Morning at Heian Shrine
After breakfast, we made our way to Heian Shrine. The vibrant vermilion architecture against the backdrop of the clear blue sky was a sight to behold. The shrine, built to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding, is a partial replica of the Imperial Palace from the Heian Period. As we approached the Otenmon (main gate), I couldn't help but feel a sense of stepping back in time.

The expansive courtyard led us to the Shin-en Garden, a masterpiece of Japanese-style gardens. We strolled along the pond, admiring the meticulously manicured landscapes and vibrant flora. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom, creating a picturesque scene that seemed straight out of a painting. It was easy to see why this garden is considered an iconic representation of Japanese beauty.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its historical landmarks, but in the serene and contemplative atmosphere that permeates every corner.
Wandering through the gardens, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The gentle breeze rustling through the trees, the soft chirping of birds, and the serene presence of the koi pond created a meditative experience. I took a moment to sit by the pond, reflecting on the beauty around me and the peaceful energy of the shrine.
A Stroll Along the Philosopher's Path
Next on our itinerary was the Philosopher's Path, a picturesque canal-side path that connects Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) with Nanzen-ji. This tranquil stone path, lined with hundreds of cherry trees, is named after the philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who used to meditate here. As we began our walk, I immediately understood why it was such a beloved spot for contemplation.

The path meandered alongside a narrow canal, with cherry blossoms forming a canopy overhead. Sunlight filtered through the blossoms, creating a magical, ethereal glow. It was a perfect day for a stroll, and we savored every moment, stopping to take photos and admire the scenery. The Kyoto Shimbun Newspaper captured the essence of the scene perfectly: Falling cherry blossom petals have covered the Lake Biwa Canal, creating a flowing flower raft.
Along the way, we passed small temples, quaint cafes, and local shops. We paused at a charming tea house for a refreshing cup of matcha and a traditional Japanese sweet. The tea was the perfect complement to the serene surroundings, enhancing our experience of the path.
It was hard to believe that the Philosopher's Path was once selected as one of Japan's most famous roads. The tranquility and natural beauty made it feel like a world away from the bustling city. We walked slowly, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and allowing ourselves to be immersed in the present moment.
Finding Zen at Nanzen-ji
Our final stop of the day was Nanzen-ji, one of Kyoto's most important Zen temples. This sprawling temple complex is surrounded by lush green hills, creating a sense of serenity and seclusion. As we entered the main gate, I was immediately struck by the grandeur and history of the place.

Nanzen-ji is known for its impressive Sanmon gate, which offers panoramic views of the city. We climbed to the top of the gate, taking in the breathtaking vista of Kyoto spread out before us. From this vantage point, I could appreciate the city's blend of traditional architecture and modern development, all framed by the surrounding mountains.
We explored the various sub-temples within the complex, each with its unique character and charm. The Hojo, a National Treasure, was particularly stunning, with its gorgeous barrier paintings and serene stone garden. I found myself drawn to the minimalist beauty of the Zen garden, which invited contemplation and reflection.
One of the most unique features of Nanzen-ji is the brick aqueduct that runs through the temple grounds. This aqueduct, part of the Lake Biwa Canal, adds an unexpected industrial element to the traditional temple landscape. We followed the path alongside the aqueduct, marveling at the blend of nature and engineering.
Before leaving Nanzen-ji, we visited Nanzen Oku-no-in, a secret waterfall grotto hidden in the hills behind the temple. The path to the grotto led us through a peaceful forest, with the sound of the waterfall growing louder with each step. Reaching the grotto, we were rewarded with the sight of a small waterfall cascading into a pool, surrounded by moss-covered rocks and lush vegetation. It was a magical and secluded spot, perfect for quiet contemplation.
A Culinary Interlude
For lunch, we decided to treat ourselves to a delightful Spanish meal at Antonio. After days of traditional Japanese cuisine, it was a refreshing change of pace. The restaurant, run by a Spanish chef, offered a cozy and inviting atmosphere. We started with a selection of tapas, savoring the flavors of Spain in the heart of Kyoto. The paella was the highlight of our meal, perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. It was a satisfying and delicious interlude in our day of temple hopping.

Each dish was a work of art, showcasing the season's flavors and the chef's impeccable skill. The service was exceptional, making us feel welcome and pampered throughout the meal.
