A Day of Nature's Wonders

Today was a day of pure enchantment in Peneda-Gerês National Park. After several days of exploring the charming villages and historical sites, we decided to dedicate ourselves to the park's natural beauty. It was a day filled with the soothing sounds of water, the vibrant greens of the landscape, and the kind of peace that only nature can provide.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Cantinho do Antigamente. I had read so much about their traditional Portuguese dishes, and it was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of hiking. The restaurant was nestled in the mountains, surrounded by lush greenery, offering a picturesque start to our day. I opted for the *pataniscas* with bean rice, a local favorite, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a strong coffee and a pastry. Sophie, of course, was happy with a simple *pão com manteiga* (bread with butter). It’s these simple moments, sharing a meal before an adventure, that I cherish the most.

Cascata da Laja: A Symphony of Water and Stone

Our first stop was the Cascata da Laja. The drive there was an adventure in itself, winding through narrow roads with breathtaking views at every turn. The anticipation built as we got closer, and the distant sound of rushing water grew louder. When we finally arrived, the waterfall was even more stunning than the pictures suggested.

The trail leading to the Cascata da Laja was relatively short, but the path was uneven, and I was glad we had our hiking boots on. The forest surrounding the trail was lush and green, with moss-covered rocks and towering trees that filtered the sunlight. It felt like stepping into a fairy tale. Sophie was particularly thrilled, her eyes wide with wonder as she skipped ahead, eager to see the waterfall.

As we rounded a bend, the Cascata da Laja came into view. The water cascaded down a series of rocky cliffs, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The sound was deafening but also incredibly soothing. We spent a good hour there, simply taking in the beauty of the falls. Sophie, ever the curious one, wanted to explore every nook and cranny, while Jean-Pierre busied himself taking photographs. I found a quiet spot on a rock and just listened to the water, feeling the cool mist on my face. It was a moment of pure serenity.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Prado da Messe: A Carpet of Green

After our refreshing visit to the waterfall, we drove to Prado da Messe. The landscape shifted dramatically as we ascended, the dense forest giving way to wide-open meadows. The drive itself was stunning. The views were incredible, with rolling hills stretching out as far as the eye could see. We parked the car and set off on foot, eager to explore this natural haven.

The meadow was vast, a carpet of green stretching out before us. Wildflowers dotted the landscape, adding splashes of color to the scene. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of grass and earth. Sophie immediately started running, chasing butterflies and laughing with delight. Jean-Pierre and I followed at a more leisurely pace, enjoying the peace and quiet of the surroundings. We found a perfect spot for a picnic, spreading out our blanket and unpacking the lunch we had prepared that morning. Sandwiches, fruit, and some local cheese – simple but delicious.

As we ate, we watched the clouds drift lazily across the sky. The only sounds were the gentle breeze and the distant bleating of sheep. It was a perfect moment, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life. After lunch, we took a walk around the meadow, exploring the various trails that crisscrossed the area. We discovered hidden streams, ancient stone walls, and panoramic viewpoints. It was a landscape that invited exploration, and we happily obliged.

Shopping for Souvenirs and Dinner in Soajo

Before heading back to our *casa*, we made a stop at the Peneda Gerês Adventure Center by Tobogã. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs and maybe inquire about some adventure activities for the coming days. The center was well-stocked with local crafts, hiking gear, and maps of the park. I bought a beautiful hand-painted tile depicting the park's landscape and a small wooden toy for Sophie.

For dinner, we decided to try Saber ao Borralho in Soajo. The village of Soajo is famous for its *espigueiros* (granaries), and I wanted to experience the local cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and welcoming, with a rustic charm that perfectly matched the village's atmosphere. We ordered the *Carne Cachena*, a local beef dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the accompanying potatoes and vegetables were cooked to perfection. Sophie, surprisingly, loved it too, devouring her portion with gusto.

As we ate, we talked about our day, reliving our favorite moments. The Cascata da Laja's stunning beauty, the peacefulness of Prado da Messe, and the charm of Soajo – it had been a day of unforgettable experiences. As the sun set, casting a warm glow over the village, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. This trip to Peneda-Gerês National Park has been everything I had hoped for and more.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Espigueiro de Alecrimes and Cascata de Cela Cavalos. I am very excited to continue exploring this beautiful region.

I am also looking forward to having a drink at Casa Capela. I heard great things about it from other travelers.

It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel. The chance to disconnect from the everyday, to connect with nature, and to create lasting memories with my family – it’s priceless. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I know that tomorrow will bring new adventures and new discoveries. I am so grateful for this time together, exploring the natural wonders of Portugal.

What I am most grateful for is being able to share it all with you. Until next time!
