Exploring the Enchanting Bungle Bungle Range
Day 16: Chasing Waterfalls and Ancient Gorges: A Kimberley Adventure
Erzsébet and Maximilian explore the majestic King George Falls and the ancient Danggu Gorge, uncovering the Kimberley's hidden treasures.
Kimberley's Kings and Ancient Depths
After nearly two weeks of immersing ourselves in the Bungle Bungle Range, Maximilian and I were eager to experience more of what the Kimberley region had to offer. Today promised a blend of natural wonders, from cascading waterfalls to ancient gorges, and I couldn't wait to capture it all through my lens. It was a day of contrasts, where the raw power of nature met the serene beauty of ancient landscapes.
Our day began, as most days here have, with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge.

Fueled up, we set off early, buzzing with anticipation for our first stop: the majestic King George Falls.
Experience the breathtaking beauty of King George Falls, a stunning waterfall in the heart of Kimberley, Western Australia, perfect for nature lovers and adventurers.
Reaching King George Falls is an adventure in itself. As there's no road access, it felt like we were embarking on a true expedition. The most common way to witness this spectacle is by boat or air. We opted for a scenic flight from Kununurra, a decision I knew I wouldn't regret. As a keen photographer, the aerial perspective promised unparalleled views of the falls and the surrounding landscape.
As the aircraft soared over the Kimberley, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of rugged red gorges, winding rivers, and lush greenery. The sheer scale of the wilderness was breathtaking. From above, I could appreciate the untouched beauty of this ancient land, a vista that stretched as far as the eye could see.
Then, there they were: King George Falls. Western Australia's highest twin waterfalls, plunging dramatically over soaring red sandstone cliffs into the tidal waters below. The sight was simply awe-inspiring. The falls, known as Oomari to the Balanggarra people, hold deep cultural significance, representing the male and female Wunkurr (Rainbow Serpents). The cascading water against the backdrop of the ancient cliffs was a powerful reminder of the forces that have shaped this land for millennia.
The King George Falls are more than just a visual spectacle; they're a testament to the raw, untamed beauty of the Kimberley and the deep connection between the land and its traditional owners.
Our pilot circled the falls, allowing us ample opportunity to capture the scene from every angle. I snapped photo after photo, trying to encapsulate the grandeur of the moment. It was impossible to truly capture the feeling of witnessing such a natural wonder, but I hoped my images would convey at least a fraction of its majesty.
After our aerial tour, we landed back in Kununurra and began our drive towards our next destination: Danggu Gorge National Park.

The drive to Danggu Gorge was a scenic journey through the heart of the Kimberley. As we approached Fitzroy Crossing, the landscape shifted, revealing the ancient Napier Range. Danggu Gorge, formerly known as Geikie Gorge, is one of the most accessible gorges in the Kimberley, making it a popular destination for travelers.
Before entering the park, we stopped in Fitzroy Crossing to learn more about the area's history and culture. The town serves as a gateway to several natural attractions and offers insights into the traditions of the local Bunuba people.
Arriving at Danggu Gorge National Park, we were immediately struck by the towering white and grey cliffs that lined the Fitzroy River. The gorge has a fascinating history, both geological and cultural. Carved by the Fitzroy River over millions of years, it was once part of an ancient barrier reef system. The Bunuba people, the traditional owners of the land, call the gorge Danggu, meaning the area where the water is very deep under the cave.
Sadly, due to the extensive flood damage sustained in 2023, boat tours were suspended, and only walking tracks were accessible. We opted for the Jarrambayah Trail, a scenic walk that winds along the base of the gorge. As we strolled along the trail, we were dwarfed by the towering cliffs, their white and grey surfaces a testament to the power of the river's floods.
The contrast between the red rocks of the Bungle Bungle Range and the white limestone of Danggu Gorge was striking. It was as if we were traversing through different chapters of the Earth's history. I imagined the ancient sea that once covered this land, teeming with life, and the slow, relentless forces that shaped the landscape we see today.
We kept an eye out for wildlife, hoping to spot freshwater crocodiles basking in the sun. While we didn't see any crocs, we did observe various bird species, including the white-bellied sea eagle and the purple-crowned fairy-wren. The air was filled with the sounds of nature, a symphony of birdsong and the gentle lapping of the river against the shore.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we found a quiet spot along the riverbank to reflect on our day. The King George Falls had been a spectacle of raw power and beauty, while Danggu Gorge offered a glimpse into the ancient past and the rich cultural heritage of the Bunuba people.
Tomorrow marks the final day of our Kimberley adventure. We plan to visit Mimbi Caves Tours and Walardi Campground, experiences I am looking forward to before we head back to Germany. This trip has been an incredible journey of discovery, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have witnessed the wonders of this unique and remote corner of the world.
Back at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company, we enjoyed a hearty dinner, recounting the day's adventures.

As I drifted off to sleep under the starlit sky, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we've shared. The Kimberley has a way of capturing your heart, and I know I'll carry its beauty with me long after we've left. The adventures we have had, the landscapes we have seen, and the people we have met will stay with me forever.
Before drifting off to sleep, I checked online to see if there were any events happening in the Kimberley region. I discovered that the Melbourne Cup is coming up soon and there are several events happening in Broome and Kununurra for that. There is also the Kununurra Christmas Markets coming up at the end of the month. It looks like there is always something happening here!
I am also looking forward to the Lake Argyle Swim next year, although I don’t think I am quite fit enough to enter! It sounds like it is a very popular event, with registrations opening on November 1st.
