Exploring the Enchanting Bungle Bungle Range
Day 8: Croc Spotting and Cave Diving: Our Kimberley Adventure Continues
Erzsébet and Maximilian explore Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek, encountering crocs, bats, and ancient Aboriginal history in the Kimberley.
Beneath Ancient Reefs and Crocodile Smiles
Today, Maximilian and I journeyed into the heart of the Kimberley's ancient landscapes, trading the beehive domes of Purnululu for the dramatic gorges and mysterious tunnels that lie to the west. Leaving behind the familiar red dirt, we ventured into a world carved by time and water, a place where Aboriginal history intertwines with geological wonders. It was a day of adventure, discovery, and a healthy dose of respect for the creatures that call these remarkable places home.
Our day began early, with a hearty breakfast at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge | Eco Accommodation in Purnululu National Park. The team at the lodge is so friendly, and they always make sure to cater to my dietary needs. Fuelled up for the day, we set off towards Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park. The drive itself was an experience, the landscape transforming as we moved further west. The dry season was definitely showing its colors, with clear warm days giving way to cooler nights.
Discover Windjana Gorge: Kimberley's ancient reef, Aboriginal history, and abundant wildlife create an unforgettable outback adventure.
Arriving at Windjana Gorge, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. The towering limestone walls, remnants of an ancient coral reef system, rose dramatically from the sandy riverbed. It was hard to believe that this entire area was once submerged under the ocean. As we began our walk along the gorge, the first inhabitants revealed themselves – freshwater crocodiles, basking lazily in the sun. They were everywhere, some small and seemingly harmless, others impressively large and undeniably intimidating. Maximilian, ever the photographer, was in his element, snapping away while keeping a respectful distance.
The Kimberley is a land where the ancient whispers of the earth meet the vibrant pulse of life, a place where every rock tells a story and every creature holds a piece of the dreamtime.
The gorge is more than just a pretty landscape; it's a place of deep cultural significance for the local Bunuba people. Windjana Gorge, also known as Bandilngan, holds a special place in the hearts of the Bunuba people, who believe that ancient creation spirits still roam the gorge. We learned about the powerful Wandjina creation spirits who reside in the area. The Bunuba people have a deep connection to this land, their history stretching back tens of thousands of years. We saw marine life fossils in the limestone gorge walls.
After a picnic lunch at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, we continued our adventure to Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park. Tunnel Creek is only 35 kilometers southeast of Windjana Gorge. This was an experience I had been particularly looking forward to. I had read about the cave system that is Western Australia's oldest.
Explore Dimalurru National Park, a stunning national park in Western Australia renowned for its limestone tunnels, rich wildlife, and cultural heritage.
The walk through the 750-meter tunnel was like stepping into another world. We waded through cool pools of water, our headlamps cutting through the darkness to reveal stalactites and stalagmites. The water was mainly just over knee height. It was a bit unnerving to think about the freshwater crocodiles that also inhabit the cave. Maximilian was a brave soul, always in the lead.
Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) has a fascinating history, both geological and human. The tunnel was carved by water over millions of years. It was also used as a hideout by the Aboriginal leader Jandamarra in the late 19th century. Jandamarra led an organized armed rebellion against European settlers, using the caves as hideouts. Learning about Jandamarra really enriched the experience.
Emerging from the other side of the tunnel, we were greeted by the warm afternoon sun and a sense of accomplishment. We took a moment to appreciate the unique beauty of this place, a hidden world beneath the surface of the earth. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way back to the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park & Tour Company, where we were staying tonight. Dinner at the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park was a welcome treat after a long day of exploring.
Tomorrow, we plan to shop at the Bungle Bungle Guided Tours | Kimberley Air and Walking Tours and visit the Kurrajong campground - Purnululu National Park and Ivanhoe Crossing.
As I reflect on the day, I am struck by the resilience of nature and the enduring spirit of the Aboriginal people. Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek are not just tourist attractions; they are living monuments to the power of time, water, and culture. They are places that demand respect, inspire awe, and leave a lasting impression on the soul.
