Enchanting Evenings in Ancient Hoi An

Today was a day of vibrant experiences, delving deep into the heart of Hoi An's culture. From the bustling Hội An Night Market to the serene Hoi An Basket Boat and the delightful culinary adventures, every moment was a sensory feast. It's amazing how much this little town can offer in just one day!

Our morning started with a hearty breakfast at Hệ Thống Mì cay Hot Hot. I must admit, the name intrigued me, and being a Kenyan who enjoys a bit of spice, I was eager to try their mì cay, or spicy noodle soup. The restaurant had a lively, local vibe, and the mì cay itself was a delicious explosion of flavors. I opted for level 2 spice, which was just the right amount of heat to wake up my senses. It reminded me of the flavorful street food back in Nyahururu, though with a distinct Vietnamese twist. Jan, bless his Dutch heart, went for level 1 and still had a bit of a flushed face – a testament to the chili prowess here!

With our taste buds tingling, we ventured to Tra Que Vegetable Village Restaurant for lunch. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this restaurant offered a tranquil escape from the bustling town. The setting was idyllic, with open-air seating overlooking the vegetable gardens. The concept of the restaurant is farm-to-table, and the freshness of the ingredients was evident in every bite. We savored traditional Cao Lau noodles and crispy spring rolls, all made with vegetables grown right there in the village. It was a refreshing and healthy meal, a welcome change after the richness of the previous days. It also made me think about the community garden I volunteer at back in Amsterdam, and how important it is to support local and sustainable food sources.

Sometimes, the best way to understand a culture is through its food and the stories woven into its traditions.

After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll through the 4u souvenir shop. I was on the hunt for unique mementos to bring back to Amsterdam. The shop was a treasure trove of local handicrafts, from silk lanterns to hand-painted ceramics. I ended up buying a beautiful silk scarf with intricate floral patterns for my mother and a small wooden carving of a water buffalo for Jan's father, who has a fondness for collecting animal figurines. I also picked up a few small lanterns, thinking they would add a touch of Hoi An charm to our Amsterdam home. They reminded me of the vibrant colors and patterns of Ankara fabrics, a piece of home I always cherish.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to the Hoi An Basket Boat experience. This was perhaps the most unique and memorable activity of the day. We hopped onto a traditional bamboo basket boat and set off along the Thu Bon River. The skilled boatman navigated the narrow waterways with ease, sharing stories about the local fishing community and the history of the area. The scenery was breathtaking, with lush mangrove forests lining the riverbanks. We even had a chance to try our hand at crab fishing, though I must admit, I wasn't very successful. Still, it was a fun and interactive experience, and it gave me a glimpse into the daily lives of the local people. The gentle rocking of the boat and the sounds of nature created a sense of serenity, a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life. I couldn't help but think about the canals of Amsterdam, though they certainly lack the tropical charm of the Thu Bon River.

The grand finale of our day was at the Kumquat BBQ Restaurant Cooking Class. This was an immersive culinary experience that combined hands-on cooking with a delicious BBQ feast. We learned to prepare several traditional Vietnamese dishes, including fresh spring rolls, papaya salad, and Banh Xeo (crispy pancakes). The chef was patient and knowledgeable, guiding us through each step with clear instructions and helpful tips. Once we had mastered the basics, we moved on to the BBQ, grilling marinated meats and vegetables over a charcoal fire. The aroma was intoxicating, and the flavors were even better. We sat down to enjoy our creations, savoring the fruits of our labor. The experience was not only educational but also incredibly fun and social. I felt a sense of accomplishment as I tasted the dishes I had prepared with my own hands. It reminded me of cooking with my grandmother back in Kenya, learning traditional recipes passed down through generations.

To cap off the night, we headed to Wanderlust Hoi An for a drink. This bar had a laid-back, beachy vibe, with colorful décor and friendly staff. We sipped on refreshing cocktails, listened to live music, and chatted with fellow travelers. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure. The bar's atmosphere reminded me of the beach bars along the Kenyan coast, a place where I feel most at peace. The friendly vibes and the mix of cultures made me feel right at home.
