Arrival in Aguas Calientes: A Town Buzzing with Anticipation

After what felt like an eternity of travel, touching down in Aguas Calientes was like stepping into a different world. The air is crisp, carrying a hint of moisture from the nearby mountains, and the energy of the town is palpable. It's a unique blend of bustling tourist hub and a community deeply rooted in its Peruvian heritage, a fascinating contrast that immediately piqued my interest. The anticipation for tomorrow's visit to Machu Picchu is almost overwhelming, but for now, I'm eager to explore what this vibrant town has to offer.

My journey here was quite the adventure in itself. Leaving behind the familiar streets of Amsterdam, I embarked on a long flight to Lima, followed by a connecting flight to Cusco. The change in altitude was immediately noticeable, a stark reminder of the towering Andes that cradle this ancient land. From Cusco, I took the train to Aguas Calientes, a scenic route that wound its way through lush valleys and alongside the roaring Urubamba River. The views were simply breathtaking, a prelude to the wonders that await me at Machu Picchu. As I reflect on my Kenyan roots, I am grateful for the opportunity to explore and share the wonders of our world with others.

After settling into my guesthouse, I decided to take a stroll through the town, eager to soak in the local atmosphere. My first stop was Manco Capac Square, the heart of Aguas Calientes. The square was alive with activity, locals and tourists mingling amidst the backdrop of colorful buildings and the impressive statue of Manco Capac, the founder of the Inca Empire. The air was filled with music, the aroma of local cuisine, and the chatter of people from all corners of the globe. I took a moment to simply sit on a bench, observing the scene and feeling a sense of connection to this vibrant community.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and today, my journey to uncover the mysteries of Machu Picchu truly begins.

Next, I ventured towards the Mercado Aguas Calientes, a bustling marketplace where locals sell everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. The market was a sensory overload, a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells. I wandered through the stalls, admiring the intricate textiles, handcrafted jewelry, and the vibrant array of fruits and vegetables. I even picked up a few souvenirs, a small token to remind me of my time in this enchanting town. It was a great opportunity to support local artisans and experience the authentic flavors of Peru.

For breakfast, I decided to try La Boulangerie de Paris - Machupicchu. This charming café offered a delightful array of French pastries and freshly brewed coffee. I savored a warm almond croissant, its flaky layers melting in my mouth, as I planned my itinerary for the day. The café had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, a perfect spot to relax and recharge before embarking on my explorations. It's fascinating how even in a place as remote as Aguas Calientes, you can find a touch of international flair.

Lunch was at Full House Peruvian cuisine & craft beer, where I indulged in traditional Peruvian dishes. I opted for the trout ceviche, a local specialty, and a refreshing craft beer. The ceviche was bursting with flavor, the tangy citrus marinade perfectly complementing the delicate trout. The restaurant had a lively ambiance, with friendly staff and a menu that showcased the best of Peruvian gastronomy. It was a delightful culinary experience that left me feeling satisfied and energized.

In the afternoon, I decided to explore Intipata, an ancient Inca agricultural site located a short distance from Aguas Calientes. The site was a testament to the ingenuity and agricultural prowess of the Inca civilization. The terraces, carved into the mountainside, were a sight to behold, a reminder of the deep connection between the Incas and the land. From Intipata, I had a panoramic view of the Urubamba Valley, a breathtaking vista that stretched as far as the eye could see. The site was peaceful and serene, a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Aguas Calientes. It's amazing to think about how the Incas were able to cultivate crops on these steep slopes, a true testament to their resourcefulness and engineering skills.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Restaurante AYASQA - Comida tradicional for dinner. This restaurant offered a wide range of traditional Peruvian dishes, prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. I chose the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian stir-fry, and a glass of chicha morada, a traditional Peruvian drink made from purple corn. The lomo saltado was cooked to perfection, the beef tender and flavorful, and the chicha morada was a refreshing accompaniment. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, with attentive staff and a menu that showcased the rich culinary heritage of Peru. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took one last stroll through Manco Capac Square. The square was even more vibrant at night, illuminated by the soft glow of streetlights and the lively chatter of people enjoying the evening air. I stopped to listen to a local band playing traditional Peruvian music, their melodies filling the air with a sense of joy and celebration. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to a day filled with new experiences and discoveries.

As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure to Machu Picchu Peak and Intimachay, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. I plan to have breakfast at Café Inkaterra, followed by lunch at Munaycha Restaurant, and dinner at El Balcón Machupicchu. I also intend to visit Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant for drinks. I'm eager to explore the ancient ruins, learn more about the Inca civilization, and capture the breathtaking beauty of this sacred site. But for now, I'm content to soak in the atmosphere of Aguas Calientes, a town that has captured my heart with its unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. Tomorrow, I will have to remember to pack my sunglasses, my power adapter, and an extra memory card!

Tonight, as I reflect on my first day in Aguas Calientes, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement.
