Echoes of the Incas

Today was a day of walking through living history. The stones beneath my feet whispered stories of an empire long gone, yet still vibrantly present. Every turn on the trail revealed a new vista, a new echo of the past, and a deeper connection to the spirit of Machu Picchu.

I started my day with a hearty breakfast at Laurita Wasi Machu Picchu. The restaurant was a cozy haven, and the food fueled me up perfectly for the day's adventures. I enjoyed some traditional Peruvian breakfast foods, which gave me a taste of the local culture that I was excited to experience today. The plan for today was to hike the Machu Picchu Hiking Trail and visit the House of the Guardian to the Funerary Rock, two spots that promised both stunning views and a glimpse into the ancient Incan civilization. I had my hiking boots on, my camera ready, and my travel journal tucked safely in my backpack. The weather was cooperating beautifully, with the sun peeking through the clouds, creating a magical ambiance around the mountains. According to the forecast, the high would be around 25°C, perfect for a day of exploring.

As I started on the Machu Picchu Hiking Trail, I was immediately struck by the sheer ingenuity of the Incas. The trail was expertly carved into the mountainside, a testament to their engineering prowess. I paused frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to soak in the panoramic views. The lush green mountains stretched out before me, and the Urubamba River snaked its way through the valley below. It was a view that truly took my breath away. I took many photos, trying to capture the grandeur, but I knew that no picture could ever truly do it justice. As I walked, I couldn't help but think about the people who had walked this same path centuries ago. What were their lives like? What were their hopes and dreams? It was humbling to imagine their presence in this sacred place.

The air is thick with history, every stone a silent witness to the rise and fall of an empire.

The trail itself was moderately challenging, with a mix of steep inclines and gentle slopes. I took my time, enjoying the journey, and making sure to stay hydrated. I was grateful for my hiking boots and reusable water bottle, two of my trip essentials. I also made sure to apply sunscreen regularly, knowing how strong the sun can be at this altitude. I did briefly wish I had remembered my sunglasses, but I made do without them. As I climbed higher, the vegetation changed, and I found myself surrounded by cloud forests, with mist swirling around the trees. It created an ethereal atmosphere, adding to the mystique of the place. I saw several different species of birds, their calls echoing through the mountains. It was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity of this region.

Eventually, I reached the House of the Guardian, also known as the Hut of the Caretaker of the Funerary Rock. This restored Inca site offered a panoramic vista of Machu Picchu, framed by the majestic Andes. It was from here that I got that classic postcard photo of the ancient city, a moment I had been anticipating since I booked this trip. The House of the Guardian is believed to have been a lookout post, providing a strategic vantage point over the entire archaeological site. I could see why it was chosen for this purpose. From here, it was possible to monitor all access and exit points to Machu Picchu.

Just a few steps away from the House of the Guardian was the Funerary Rock, a carved stone monolith with a small access of stairs formed in the same rock. Archaeological research suggests that this rock was used as a ceremonial table where mummies were embalmed. It is also believed to have served as a point of astronomical study. I took some time to explore the area, marveling at the intricate stonework and the sheer ingenuity of the Incas. The fact that these structures had stood the test of time was a testament to their skill and craftsmanship.

For lunch, I decided to try Toto's House, a restaurant that I had read about in several travel blogs. It was a bustling place, filled with tourists and locals alike. I ordered a traditional Peruvian dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The service was friendly and efficient, and the ambiance was lively and welcoming. I enjoyed chatting with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and tips about our adventures in Peru.

As the afternoon wore on, I made my way back down the Machu Picchu Hiking Trail, taking one last look at the stunning scenery. The light had changed, casting long shadows across the mountains, creating a different perspective on the landscape. I felt a sense of gratitude for having had the opportunity to experience this incredible place. It was a day that I would never forget.

Before dinner, I stopped by Inka Happiness Cultural Bar for a drink. This charming establishment, run by a local family, was dedicated to preserving the cultural and culinary traditions of Peru. The bar had a cozy atmosphere, with good music and friendly service. I tried a Pisco Sour, a traditional Peruvian cocktail, and it was the perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking. I chatted with the owner, learning about the history of the bar and the family's commitment to preserving their heritage. It was a reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses and experiencing the authentic culture of a place.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Tampu Restaurant at Sanctuary Lodge. This restaurant is known for its elevated Peruvian cuisine and stunning views. As I walked through the doors, I was immediately struck by the elegant ambiance and the floor-to-ceiling windows that offered panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. I ordered a multi-course meal, sampling a variety of traditional Peruvian dishes. Each dish was expertly prepared and beautifully presented. The service was impeccable, and the staff went out of their way to make me feel welcome. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

After dinner, I took a leisurely stroll back to my accommodation, savoring the cool night air and the sounds of the jungle. I reflected on the day's experiences, feeling a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore Machu Picchu. It was more than just a tourist destination; it was a place of history, culture, and natural beauty. I felt a connection to the Incas, to the land, and to myself. As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamed of the adventures that awaited me tomorrow, including my visit to Huayna Picchu and Choquesuysuy. I'm also excited to visit Quechua´s House - Coffee Bookshop, a place I've heard has great coffee and books.

I'm really looking forward to it!
